  1. Reusse may be right, and with the tight ship the Twins keep we are conditioned to think we'll never hear the whole story. But all reports are that Terry Ryan is amongst the most respected men in baseball. If he got fired to drum up positive PR, or because he wanted to eat some veteran salaries or the remainder of Molitor's contract, other clubs will or perhaps already know. If Ryan is so revered, I would think at some point soon folks from other organizations will anonymously rat out Twins ownership if they did Ryan wrong. And what a spectacle that would be. I suspect Occam's Razor here though, Ryan got canned for bad decisions and poor performances, just as most of us have been complaining about. If we don't hear reports otherwise, I'll be satisfied with that assumption.
  2. Snipe John Mozeliak for President of Baseball Operations, and Ill trust his judgement on the guys under him.
  3. If other clubs thought Desmond could still cut it at SS why is he only on a one year deal playing a brand new position. He was awful last year, why should Ryan have expected him to be good but not expected Nunez or Escobar to be good? Both were better than him last year. And why would anyone care about having Desmond on this team? He wouldn't have this club in contention. You would really rather have Desmond in a losing season than the draft pick? Predicting that a 30-year-old who had decling trends the past three years and nearly led the NL in strikeouts was going to have more trade value with an undeserved price tag, than two arbitration guys who put up pretty solid numbers last year is simply being blinded by his name. Also, the Twins payoff of Park's former team is inconsequential, it didn't cripple the spending this year and it's already paid, it won't impact salary going forward. It had nothing to do with the inability to upgrade the bullpen. Also, it's not a salary and should not be considered part of payroll any more than money spent on the Dominican Academy or adding the new bar to Target Field.
  4. Come on that's not fair. Trump university got sued out of existence before they could teach these folks AMA quotation guidelines. Lay off.
  5. Not sure that I like the fake out, but assuming the new GM is not coming from within and assuming it will likely not be someone many of us are familiar with, I like the preemptive parallel. The McPhail name was widely known though, I'm guessing if Epstien has kids they're probably still in school?
  6. Nope. In fact Hrbek is the only other guy to lead the Twins four times, but not consecutive.
  7. At this point, I feel the same amount of sadness regardless of outcome. Only difference is in how much beer I drink.
  8. Late to the game. So Milone has a one hitter through six? Is trading him mid-inning out of the question?
  9. Desmond isn't a SS anymore, he wouldn't have filled that hole which is currently filled by the Twins lone All Star and best player. Also, he would have cost Kiraloff. I liked the Park signing, still do, he's very cheap. I just didn't like that the Twins didn't move Plouffe and/or tell Mauer that he was either going to play RF or ride pine instead of the poor Sano decision.
  10. I agree. St Peter is just fine for PR, promotions, community outreach etc. I still don't feel comfortable with him heavily involved in this GM call. If I'm Pohlad and I'm serious about getting the best candidate, I call the commissioner and the owners of the high revenue clubs and tell them that if they don't want me being a revenue sharing sieve, they need to lend a layman like me a hand. If there is no search firm, and the call all falls to St Peter and Pohlad, they'll deserve all the criticism about how the decision was about money, not winning, that will certainly ensue. Even if it's not true.
  11. Seeing as Pohlad isn't exactly in tune with the baseball side of things, I'm not sure how he had a different idea how to improve the product. I hope it's not about money, the first thing that came to my mind was Ryan wanted eat money to move vets and Pohlad doesn't want to.
  12. I really have no clue what Krivsky does for this team, but he's been a GM before, I would have preferred him over Anthony as well.
  13. I'm OK with a salary dump simply because the only players I still want on this team come next year don't make much. Plouffe, Santana, Perkins, Nolasco, Mauer, Hughes? Man, if Anthony had some kind of magic potion and was able to lose those last four, even I might be on board with giving him a real shot.
  14. The GM has to come from outside. That being said, there really isn't anything Anthony can do now to prove he's the guy, and that is an unfair position the team put him in. The Twins could win out, yet Anthony should get no credit for it. The Twins could lose out and Anthony should get no blame. He reall only has two actions to make that may affect the onfield product at this time. 1. He can call up the young player, however that should be a given, Anthony can't be credited with doing something that every other sane GM for a losing team would do. 2. Anthony can trade the vets something else any sane GM would do. The quality of the return for the vets should not be made clear until long after the Twins new GM has been hired. So my fear is that Anthony won't call up the young guys and won't trade the vets because not doing so may give the team some paper wins, which leads to a bigger fear, that St Peter and Pohlad don't know enough about baseball to realize the record the rest of the way should have zero impact on the decision.
  15. If the current Twins assistant GM was the combined spirit of Branch Rickey and Ed Barrow and said spirit had a double major in Statistical Analysis and Quntitative ESP, I still wouldn't want him. This team needs gutting and the smell of failure and stubbornness needs to be throughly exercised from the whole organization.
  16. Agree. We'll see if Pohlad sings the same tune if a qualified GM blows him away and tells him why Molitor is wrong for his particular vision. It's a foolish thing to say unless it's posturing. It might not have even been said for Molitor's sake but simply to prevent the players from quitting.
  17. I'm surprised by the timing, not the decision. Pohlad has never been as media visible as he has been the last couple months, something was brewing. That being said, they likely just fired the most knowledgeable baseball mind in the system. I don't think Pohlad or St Peter could manage this firing or hiring themselves; who's pulling the strings? Was there internal insurrection by guys like Anthony and Krivsky? All the widely believed "country club" talk would imply no. Were other owners and/or the commissioners office whispering in Pohlad's ear unhappy about the fact that the Twins are already on the receiving end of revenue sharing despite the new stadium? I'd think it's more likely. If so, that's great for the team if the rest of the clubs are making a concerted effort to make the team better.
  18. In my opinion, an abundance of middle infielders allows for more flexibility than 1B. I do see where you're coming from though. I also agree that the real difference between Berrios and Giolito is the fact that the Nats are in the playoff race. I always liked Pomeranz and thought Oakland was going to make him a starter and do to him what they've done with numerous unfulfilled starters before him. I'm still surprised they didn't do more with him. That being said, I no longer trust former San Diego pitchers. I think he's a good pitcher but I'm going to reserve judgement until we see if his stuff plays the same way at Fenway that it did in Petco.
  19. If Seattle is serious about making a run, Suzuki is probably the safer bet over Zunino to give quality at bats and bump off Iannetta for playing time anyway. Wow, that was really hard to say. I still mean it, but I can't believe I just typed that.
  20. I can't tell if you are extremely in love with Zunino for some reason, or extremely dissatisfied with Kepler for some reason. In only 181 plate appearances, Kepler has a .8 WAR compared to Zunino's .3 in over 1000 PA. And Zunino plays a premium position so he gets huge positional adjustments. I'll take a flyer on Zunino, but he is one more MLB flameout away from going the way of Oswaldo Arcia.
  21. Nice research! I wonder if those numbers might not reflect reaction as opposed to causation. Perhaps they drafted a lot in your first two breakouts because they knew they had troubles. Like a lot of things with this club lately, the lack of pitchers drafted in the third breakout is puzzling.
  22. Question, do you have scouts on a retainer or are they actual employees?
  23. I'd say the protesters WANT to make it black and white. What difference does it make if the police shoot these folks because they are racist or just scared? The reason or intention shouldn't matter, only the end result. The situation should be black and white in the sense that every police encounter should be the same no matter your race. When the "grey area" or "gut instinct" is in play, people end up getting profiled and people end up getting shot.
  24. You're seriously trying to say southern folks in the 1960's didn't know about the problems with segregation because Twitter hasn't been invented yet? Come on. People protest to voice their displeasure, no one listens if no one is inconvenienced. The only reason this is viewed differently is because we don't have the lens of history magnifying how wrong those against the protesters were and how right the protesters were.
  25. They aren't stark unless some people actually think the protests during the civil rights era were universally supported, which obviously they weren't or they wouldn't be protesting in the first place. Do you not think that the people of Selma weren't "annoyed" for the inconvenience the protesters caused them?
