  1. If it's a cartilage issue this should end his season no? Now with none of the on field entanglements the Twins can put him to use in the way they appear to most covet: full time clubhouse leader.
  2. He cracked the .200 mark after a total of ten of his 92 games this year. I guess saying he has a 74% chance of ending the season above Mendoza would be considered wildly optimistic?
  3. I agree that it's probably nothing to do with development as these guys are veterans. I'd also agree that a winning atmosphere likely is a motivating factor for some of these guys. Escobar and Pressly were already playing well for the Twins so I don't know that there's much to read into with them. Dozier and Lynn have definitely perked up, but their lousy play with the Twins likely was a large part of why the Twins didn't have a "winning atmosphere". And while I was never interested in signing Lynn to begin with, his early season struggles are pretty typical of guys who don't sign until spring training. I'd put a lot of his Twins struggles on that.
  4. Is it wrong to admit that his little fratboy smirk in his BBR profile pic makes this move even more frustrating? https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/fieldjo04.shtml That look to me says, "Yeah, I OPS'd .728 in AAA last year, I'm kind of a big deal."
  5. I don't know if it's been said, but it looks like the front office values a low walk rate above all else, at least for the relievers. It seems like typical bullpens tend to have some wildcards as far as control goes but every other team's bullpens bring serious velocity. It's probably why guys like Busenitz, Moya, Slegers and Duffey have gotten repeated chances in the majors while guys like Curtis, Reed and Bard do not. The former players have a good recent track record in AAA of limiting BB. Of course they still have next to no leash, though to be fair Hildenberger and Rogers have gotten ample leash. And none of that explains Fernando Rodney.
  6. I think most of us are just puzzled by the bird in the bush approach when the guys in the minors have the same if not more potential. Particularly since they basically did the same thing with Magill, letting him leapfrog the in-house guys, yet refuse to ever use him.
  7. I didn't check on that one. I presume he is older than his son though, who is also on the team.
  8. 53-year-old Rafael Palmeiro was in town playing my local American Assiciation team. He's OPS'ing .942 through 27 games and 105 PA, easily the top mark on his team.
  9. Drake is a terrible move if the team is at all serious about giving an actual look to Busenitz, Curtis, Reed, Bard and company. Drake better be on waivers by the end of the week and either claimed by another club or in Rochester.
  10. Good stuff Mike, nothing there to disagree with. I'm really behind giving Kepler ample time at 1B if only to make the roster more flexible (I'm also behind using him as trade bait to upgrade the roster this off season). I like Astudillo but was originally going to say that he really looks like one of those gimmicky players that we'll all look back on in a decade and name drop to prove our Twins-cred, but I didn't realize for the first time ever he's starting to develop some pop. Yeah, he needs to be up even if Molitor isn't creative enough to know what to do with him, he can ask Jeff Pickler.
  11. Seems to me it's only spin if you really want it to be untrue, or as you said, want to believe what you want to believe. Escobar seems like the kind of versatile veteran this front office would like to keep around, and Escobar would have to be naive to accept an extension two months prior to becoming a free agent. On top of that we have a report from La Velle saying there were talks. Yet people are confidently saying it didn't happen when there's much more evidence to support that it did.
  12. So considering the front office dodged a bullet by not trying to extend him, they were right?
  13. I agree with the point as we'd be silly to think the front office didn't take the best return for these players that they thought was available to them. However, without speaking for Tom, I think his idea was to grade the difference between the anticipated return and the actual return.
  14. While I'd like the Twins to 'win' trades, I don't think it's necessary. In it's true sense, a trade isn't a competition, it's an exchange of goods. The Twins no longer needed Dozier but they could use some more prospects. I can say that I'd rather have the two prospects the Twins got for Dozier who don't need to be added to the 40-man than the two 26-year-olds Boston gave up for Kinsler who did require 40-man spots.
  15. Geez, and here I was thinking De La Trinidad was one of my five favorites from this group! Those guys who walk as much as they strikeout always seem to get shot at the big leagues. His draft position sure isn't going to help him in the eyes of evaluators though.
  16. And perhaps Dozier wasn't actually much of a leader previously, it just so happened that he was the team's best player, looks good and speaks well so the reporters would shove their microphones in his face first, which made him look like a leader. Obviously that's only an off-the-cuff theory.
  17. Perhaps it was just a lack of media presence, or a lack of my paying attention, but it sure seemed like Dozier played the role of a front-and-center leader the prior three years more so than he did this year.
  18. Definitely has to be a balance, and I've always leaned much more heavily to the talent side over personality and I was never on board with what appeared to be a desire for more 'veteran leaders' over the young athletes. However, I might have to do a bit of re-evaluating, but it would probably be more along the lines of "I'll still take the talented surely jerks, but I'll try to avoid the malcontents and disinterested". Not that anyone on or previously on the club necessarily fit into either of those categories.
  19. There could be/have been some bad apples in the clubhouse and I'd prefer there weren't any. At the same time I've advocated for years to get the best players and not everybody has to be a boy scout. But I really want a new manager, so if this is more leverage used to get one, I guess I'll selfishly roll with it.
  20. And then I hope they don't send them down again every time they give up an earned run.
  21. These bats are getting exciting. More hard hitting corner guys than you could shake a stick at. Hopefully they all finish the season strong so as their value is elevated if the Twins happen to be looking to make some trades this off season.
  22. Rodney is a time bomb, but I've seen nothing to indicate he's a me-first kind of guy, quite the opposite, seems like the young bullpen guys like him. I'd guess the reason he's always a closer is because that's the perception of him around the league for over a decade now.
  23. Kimbrel, Herrera, Britton, Miller, Familia, Kelly, Oh, Allen and maybe Soria are all free agents next year. Assuming the Twins are only able to get one of Machado or Harper, they're going to have lots of money to throw at that group.
  24. Most 35-year-olds don't. Nothing anyone could do about Mauer, he couldn't be traded even if another club wanted him. All cutting him does is give more at bats to Morrison and Grossman. Yawn. He won't be a Twin next year unless he's wearing a tie and sitting behind a desk.
  25. The Brewers released, not DFA'd, Brad Miller. If we must go with a veteran 2B, I'd prefer the Twins pick him up and dump Forsythe. Edit: Huh, BBR says he is still controlled for one more year (should a team want to).
