  1. And all this makes it sound like a terrible idea for the Twins to do it. However, if the Twins think he'll get a multi year deal on the free agent market but they only want to give him one year, and if the Twins think that he's still a better option than what's available to them in free agency or within the organization, then there's no reason not to offer it in my opinion. The Twins can't spend all their available payroll budget next year even if they wanted to. So I agree with Jaffe, not Klaw. But I'd still look to trade him first and foremost.
  2. I'm not sure, but after watching last year's free agent class, I'd think 3/35 is way higher than he'd get. Mike Moustakas would be jealous. Eduardo Nunez got 2 years $8M. Neil Walker who OPS'd .801 in the final year of an 8 year stretch that could hardly be more consistent had to take a minor league deal. Plus, in free agency he's probably going to have to wait around all winter until whenever Manny Machado decides to sign because he and his agent would most likely plan on selling him as a similarly versatile back-up plan. I think Escobar would accept the QO as soon as the words came out of the Twins mouth. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
  3. Thus far in the majors Slegers has thrown more sliders than changeups, both of which have been effective. Both his two-seamer and four-seamer have gotten crushed though.
  4. I don't see any reason to get him unless the front office thinks he can regain his value from two years ago and be moved in August. That seems quite unlikely though and not at all worth blocking Romero, Gonsalves, Mejia, Slegers, Littell or even Thorpe from getting some MLB seasoning this year in preparation for 2019 contributions.
  5. Wells has gotten good-not-great strikeout numbers in Ft. Myers. Anyone know his velocity? So many of these taller pitchers don't throw too hard and are more of control pitchers. I've got my fingers crossed with Wells but it would be nice if someone could confirm he doesn't really fit the Chris Young, Jon Rauch, Aaron Slegers pitching profile. Does Wells throw hard and/or does his breaking stuff have good movement?
  6. Well that's not for a lack of effort on the part of his dad. Breekie18 is killing it in the Adopt-A-Prospect forum. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/28928-donny-breek-2018/
  7. I don't blame anyone for putting a skeptical eye to Rooker, but actuallly that part about the RH college bats seemed to be cherry picking and a mischaracterization. That complaint holds less water as hardly any RH college bats end up in the big leagues as firstbase largely dominated by lefties, he excludes all HS and foreign born 1B types as if playing college ball is a detriment for some reason, and Rooker also plays the outfield. He's excluding tons of available comps by intentionally and unnecessarily limiting his search perimeters.
  8. Don't Dozier, Hildenberger, Escobar and Pressly fit those perimeters? Jake Cave's giving it a try. Eduardo Nunez was a good find. Grossman and Adrianza had a moment in the sun and the jury's still out on Rogers and Busenitz. Obviously none of those guys are JD Martinez but I'd put Dozier's success above 2/3rds of those guys and Escobar's over a handful as well. Not trying to defend this front office or the prior one, I just don't think this particular area is the amongst the main reasons this organization can't compete,
  9. I'd hate to see Gibson go because he's the clear #2 for this team right now and ideally would be a great #3-4 on a contending Twins team next year. But if they don't feel the team will have the pieces to win it all next year and can get a haul for Gibson + now, I guess it's a no-brainer.
  10. You were concerned that $17M was too much of a risk, not resigning the players. Payroll isn't going to be an issue, they could overpay Dozier or Escobar for one year or sign Eduardo Nunez for $4M or give Neil Walker a minor league deal and they'll be in the exact same situation, that being a veteran on a one year deal. They should be choosing who'd they like best and get that person, salary be damned as it's not going to be a factor in 2019. There are no such thing as tight purse strings with a $45M payroll.
  11. This is the second mention of Corey Ray being a trade target I've found on our site today. Is this flowing from some national report or is it just a TD theme because Milwaukee has pretty good OF depth? He seems like an awfully good prospect for most of what the Twins have to offer.
  12. For a team with a 45M payroll? I don't see the risk. I don't think a QO is necessary but it's not risky; it in no way would prevent the Twins from signing anybody and everybody they want to next year.
  13. Why don't they just sign him as a free agent then? An extension likely isn't going to cost any less than a new deal in free agency and you can't force a player to sign an extension, why would he want to now? Get more assets now while we can.
  14. Phew, I thought it was only me who didn't understand; I began to think that perhaps I was in a different dimension in which time moved faster and I was beginning to think about my fast approaching mortality. The grey hairs in my beard weren't helping either.
  15. Duffy and Merrifield have three and four years of control left, I think KC would be doing themselves a disservice moving them both in the same package at the trade deadline. Both contending clubs and clubs who think they'll contend soon would have interest in those kinds of players, but you'd probably only get bids from contenders mid-season.
  16. Looks like next year is year seven, not this year. I thought I read that he was a minor league free agent next year. So yeah, odds are he's still here next year. Move him to the pen ASAP, he needs to go into next year knowing and preparing for that role.
  17. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. My only complaint in these situations where prospects don't pan out is when the Twins lose a starting pitcher who once had promise without ever giving them a full year in the bullpen. I think they should have moved Stewart to the pen long ago to see if they could recoup any value, I think it's too late now unless they hang onto him next year as well. Pitchers tend not to take off until a full offseason of preparing for that role.
  18. I can see your argument. I guess I'd argue that half of the fans were ready to move on from Grossman this offseason and the other half were at least willing to concede he had no business playing in the field. I like Cave and I'll definitely give the front office kudos for the trade, but most teams have those types of fringy OF prospects who may be able to be called upon in an emergency. Thankfully he's been a nice find, but I don't think he was really any different than Granite as far setting the roster for depth goes. Considering Grossman, LaMarre and Motter have already recorded 591 innings in the outfield, and the Twins have gotten lucky that Cave's 186.1 innings haven't been a black hole, I think they absolutely have been hurt by the lack of 4th OF depth. More to the point though, the Twins have been hurt by a lack of right-handed production and had they planned accordingly, that RH production could have/should have been the 4th OF who could also regularly function as a DH.
  19. I don't mind buying an extra mustard if it's on sale, but I wouldn't leave the store without also buying the ketchup.
  20. The team may not have gotten notably better production, but I'll bet if we asked industry experts in March to rank the 12 men listed in your second paragraph along with LaMarre in order of how they'd expect them to produce this year, LaMarre would have gotten every last place vote. The front office spent a record payroll and they were fairly aggressive, which they should be lauded for, but every single off season acquisition was still based on economy spending and bargain hunting. Yeah, Logan Morrison was a steal considering last year's production, but I don't go out and buy mustard when I actually need ketchup just because the mustard was on sale.
  21. Good call, those things aren't cemented until the off season. I wonder if there is verbiage specifically saying a team can or cannot move those things as a part of future considerations. The Brewers likely should still be getting a compensation pick due to market size but where that pick falls is still in the air.
  22. Most of Milwaukee's interesting young pieces are already at the MLB level and likely unavailable. If the Twins do business with them for some of the guys already mentioned they should also be pushing for one of the tradable sandwich round draft picks and/or international bonus pool cash as well.
  23. With his age and years of control he always seemed like a guy more likely flipped in the off season when more teams would be interested in trading for him.
  24. Yeah, I've heard that too but I never thought it made much sense. Their rotation is locked up and their best hitters are young and controllable. They lose their bullpen, which should be the easiest part of the team to replace. Unless you're KC and your whole team revolves around your bullpen, you should be OK.
