  1. Good for Reed, the SF outfield situation is awful, he should get plenty of ABs. Good luck guy!
  2. Yeah, I could almost understand standing pat with the rotation as I didn’t like the free agent starters at all. However, the bullpen could have easily supported three legit additions, and there were plenty of good relievers available for very cheap. Even plenty good ones who had to settle for minor league deals. I’d like to hear the reasoning for not trying for even the Tyler Clippard/Bud Norris/Adam Warren types.
  3. Well who did you want last year? They went after both Darvish and Ohtani even though going after Ohtani was beyond embarrassing. The smart move would have been JD Martinez, but he was just as affordable, so it's not like the Twins (or any of the other stupid teams) passed because of the money. No team is fully built from within, but most of them are mainly built from within, but what's that got to do with the free agency gripe? When this team gets to where Terry Ryan's teams of the early 2000's was, they better be trading for upper caliber help. Hopefully that's this July or thereabouts.
  4. What quality free agents are you upset about missing out on? I only count Harper and Machado this year and there was no way they were ever coming to Minnesota even if the Twins had the best offer. I've changed my tune since last year, I did want Darvish, but I have no interest in giving pitchers long term deals anymore unless we're talking about a young guy we're extending. But even if I hadn't changed my tune, there wasn't a pitcher available this year that I would have liked on a long term deal.
  5. If Cruz, Gonzalez, Lynn, Santana, Hughes, Nolasco level free agents don't float your boat, then I don't think it's an excuse. This list is awful. Sounds like Goldschmidt and Sale can already be crossed off. Outside of Bogearts, Rendon and Cole, all of whom have had rumored extension talks, there's not a player left who would be considered a significant signing at least no more so than what the Twins annually do. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/08/2019-20-mlb-free-agents.html
  6. Xander Bogaerts, Anthony Rendon and Gerrit Cole will all probably get paid well if they reach free agency, but I'd bet at least two of them also sign extensions. It's paramount that this team starts developing their own super star players.
  7. I don't disagree and I have little interest in paying players who have already peaked. I also haven't seen many players I'd actually want to have on the team long term in the past two free agent crops. Personally I thought there was probably next to no chance Harper or Machado would come to Minnesota even if the Twins made them the best offer. I don't know that we can judge the current front office on quality vs quantity since I don't think there was attainable quality available. The skepticism still lingers from the past front office though as ownership is still the same. There were definitely missed opportunities back then.
  8. Recant or ye shall be dubbed a blasphemous witch!
  9. I don't know enough about Kline. He doesn't look too large for an interior lineman, that might be part of the plan though. If he's average, it's an upgrade. Looks like 7.25M guaranteed, not sure how much is coming in year one. I'd guess with the draft pick allotment this puts the Vikings over the cap?
  10. It's not hindsight. As far as free agents go I've been pushing for quality over quantity for a long time and I'm pretty sure Mike has held the same position. It's definitely not a rare opinion around here.
  11. The White Sox may be banking against some rough arbitration numbers down the road, but Jimenez already got demoted, so unless he's called ASAP, they're only buying out one free agent year. Buying one free agent year doesn't usually get me excited, I'd want two or more. The White Sox must really be banking on him becoming a star. Based on their recent track record with their prospects, they should probably get an outside consultant to make this call for them.
  12. I'll take the skilled eyes of a radar gun. I haven't seen him yet except for the clips. Looks like he's got a bunch of wacky curveballs. I'd buy into his K% translating to the majors if he has good velocity on his FB to go with it.
  13. I think you'll find that most folks on this site don't value stats like RBI and Wins as much any more.
  14. Come on White Sox, now you're trying to make me cheer against a young man before even makes the majors? That just makes me feel bad; dirty move.
  15. Well I'd think it can go on as long as capitalism is still in tact. I'm guessing my grandfather would have been horrified at the price of a $5 beer in 1990.
  16. I don't know, if they would have let Barr walk they'd have been down to one injury prone starting-capable LB as well. They would have been in a hole either way. There didn't look to be any standout free agent OL this year anyway, and I have no idea which ones fit the new zone blocking scheme. This team has screwed itself by only drafting and developing one competent lineman in the last decade. Spielman drafted Elflien, then Sullivan way back in 2008. I'll throw him a bone and say Fusco wasn't a bad get. He has no clue about drafting lineman, he should have been outsourcing his OL decision making long before he had a chance to take Willie Bearvers in round 4.
  17. I hated Jeff Fischer, he had to have been the luckiest coach ever. Zimmer is miles better than this team's last three coaches and unlike those guys I think Zimmer would be snapped up by another team ASAP if the Vikings fired him. I wouldn't mind a change just to shake it up, but I don't see Zimmer as the problem. Spielman has lived by a handful of great moves, but he hasn't had nearly enough consistently competent moves, I think he needs to go.
  18. Spielman's had one really excellent draft, a few decent drafts and a couple of clunkers. He's going to need to pull out his best one yet though if they're going to need to fill two OL and an interior D-lineman with day one starters, not to mention enough additional guys to make up for the lack of depth on the OL, LB and secondary. And frankly, I wanted at least three new OL starters; I really wanted to kick Reiff to guard or RT. That seems unlikely now.
  19. I assumed the kicker was always going to be a question mark. I don't think there was any way to change that.
  20. Yeah, if you have to go to Semien you're not making the playoffs anyway so what's the point? At least Sloter has the aura of the unknown still surrounding him. Semien made it clear long ago that he isn't capable of running an offense.
  21. Yeah, historically they've been brutal. I'm not sure that a 9th ranking is going to put a ton of guys around Trout, but maybe, it's a better situation now than it has been in forever. I liked their GM and managerial change; they probably should have made those moves long before. I'd feel a lot better about the future if I was an Angles fan.
  22. Trout costs $36M per year for a franchise than can support a $200M payroll; the club is a top 10 spender every year. His contract isn't harmful in any possible way. Even on the Twins, $36M wouldn't be unmanageable.
  23. Good for Trout and the Angels fans; I assume there is such a thing. The Angels have made some brutal personnel decisions the last decade and can't draft and develop to save their lives. Trout seems to be the exception. If they weren't in the same league as the Twins, I'd hope they'd get their act together with their farm system to get Trout some more playoff spotlight.
  24. I'm not sure what if any impact Baldelli had on TB's lineup construction last year, but TB had six guys bat leadoff in at least 15 games. Most of the other spots in the lineup were very fluid as well. Old School me likes to go back and think about the standard batting order of the teams from say 1987 or 2002, but lineup flexibility has tons of benefits to it. I mean, was it ever really wise to bat Jacque Jones leadoff against lefties?
  25. I'll ride with Kepler at the front of the ship for now, but it would be really nice if Buxton finally becomes what people have been hoping for or it would be great if Wade or somebody else breaks out. If Kepler was hitting like he did last year I don't think he's productive or consistent enough to leadoff and if he finally realizes his potential, he'd probably be better served in the middle of the lineup.
