  1. I didn't get to see the game, but that's what I've been waiting for. The last couple years it seemed like they were supposed to be the new core for a competitive future, but I got zero Hunter/Koskie/Jones,Guzman/Pierzynski/Radke vibes from them. I'd been hopeful all winter that they just needed the new manager to really tie the room together.
  2. Why? This team should be just as capable of developing their own pitchers as the other clubs. With the teams controlling pitchers for their first seven years or longer, pitchers on the free agent market are almost certainly past their peaks. I don't want long term deals for guys who are past or almost past their peaks. If your team needs #3, 4 or 5 starters, great, go get some on the free agent market, but they don't require long term deals. But this team, and most teams really, should be developing their aces, not that aces end up making it to free agency anymore.
  3. I for one don't want free agent pitchers on long term deals. I'd prefer using the automatic seven years of control on the guys still in their prime and spending the free agent money on offense.
  4. Why? Gibson sounded optimistic in his original interview, I wouldn’t think he would be if he got a low ball offer. Considering Gibson’s age, I’d be really surprised if the hold up wasn’t over years, not money.
  5. His comps on the market may still get $12M per year, but no ones giving 32-year-old comp pitchers 4 year deals anymore.
  6. I think Zimmer would kill Spielman himself if they drafted a kicker. Other teams don't seem to have a chronic problem just fishing a usable kicker off of the discard pile in early summer. Obviously the Vikings aren't to be trusted in that department, but they haven't been good drafting youngsters, or signing big names either. Their dumpster dive for Forbaith was probably their best kicking decision this decade. I guess I'm trying to say, this is the Vikings kicker we're talking about so I'm not going to trust Stephen Gostkowski any more than I'm going to trust Connor Barth
  7. That's too many years. I don't care much about the money. To be fair to Kyle though, he should probably most be judged on what he did after getting recalled in August of 2017. Prior to that he was still trying to do the sinkerball bit, after getting demoted he clearly changed his approach and started using his breaking pitches to get more swings and misses. He has been really consistent the past year and a half. I guess I also don't really care how many Wins he got.
  8. It's funny, I was the rare bird defending Gibson right after the Twins hired Falvey. I said he had the size and the repertoire similar to Cleveland's starters and I guessed the new front office would tell him to stop intentionally putting the ball in play and start striking guys out with his good velocity and breaking pitches. It was like one of the only baseball "calls" I've ever gotten right. I'm almost always wrong with these kinds of things. But then he went and got old (for a starting pitcher) and now I'm torn about keeping a guy whom I should otherwise be particularly fond of..
  9. http://www.startribune.com/kyle-gibson-twins-talking-bigger-contract-again-after-failing-to-agree-on-long-term-deal-earlier/507159692/ Interesting to see how this plays out. I'd have to think an extension is likely since the Twins hadn't let the other extension talks leak until after they were nearly complete, or declined. Though in this case it does appear that Gibson was the one disclosing the information.
  10. With Kubiak and Dennison on staff I'm guessing the front office isn't looking for what we'd prefer in an offensive lineman? I assume the team will be doing way more zone blocking so they'll be getting the quicker but likely smaller lineman, which usually aren't the big names. I don't know that I care for that scheme but that's what I assume is happening. I really don't know which free agents are a fit for this team, though I'd feel better if I saw a couple signed already. And Griffen restructured. 2019 salary goes from 10.5M to 8M. I thought they'd lower it more; this doesn't seem to keep Waynes out of danger. Though I read somewhere a few days ago that Rudolph's agent said the team hasn't approached them about restructuring his deal. If they haven't, that makes me think he's getting cut no matter what, no way do they pay him 7M next year.
  11. The Twins can afford what the Yankees paid Severino and the Phillies paid Nola. If those are the types of deals Berrios is looking for, it only makes sense that he wouldn't do an extension now as he's a year behind those two in service time. Next year was always more likely unless Berrios was willing to take a lesser deal or the Twins were really willing to overpay. I'd be curious to hear if Rosario also said no or if for some reason he wasn't considered for an extension.
  12. I'm OK seeing how the new trade deadline plays out, I wouldn't have been opposed to seeing what happened by pushing the traditional deadline to August 31st though either. Teams need to be encouraged to make moves earlier in the year though. Maybe make the stakes of late season trades financially significant? Teams making trades after July 31st have to pay in what equals 50% of their acquired players' reaming season salary into the revenue sharing pool? Trades between June 1 and July 31st have to pay in 15% and trades made prior to June pay nothing?
  13. A replacement for a star player isn't usually available anyway, there's usually a good reason why a player makes it through waivers and is available in August. Also, every other professional sport has a firm trade deadline and they seem to manage. I'd think the 3 batter rule would increase strategy, it just wouldn't be the current strategy. A manager is going to have to gameplan more than one at bat in advance with this rule. I also rarely see a guy who "doesn't have it" get yanked after one batter anyway. It's usually not clear that he doesn't have it until he's faced three batters.
  14. I'd think they need to add the stipulation that if you DFA a guy mid-inning obviously someone else has to come in to pitch. If the GM goes to the mound to give the guy the news, does that count as a mound visit though?
  15. I like the rule changes, but even more than that, I like the collaboration between the owners and the players. This seems like a huge step in avoiding a strike, I would have thought both sides would have been waiving these changes around like weapons in an attempt to score a better deal in the upcoming CBA. It almost makes me think the owners have already let it be known to the MLBPA that they're aware the current economic situation is crap and the players will get a bigger piece of the pie in the next CBA.
  16. Good riddance to LOOGYs. Not to the actual human beings, just to the position. It was always uneconomical from a roster stand point, now combine the three batter minimum (kind of) with the additional roster spot and maybe we get to see some bold team carry a 5, dare I dream 6, man bench!
  17. And it should present an opportunity for some of the aging players stick in the league longer.
  18. My guess is there won't be a set lead off guy. Looking at TB's lineups last year, they had six guys who lead off at least 13 games. The #2 spot was rotated almost the same way, and it should be noted that CJ Cron batted in that spot quite a bit last year as well. So my guess would be that Kepler, Polanco and Buxton will have a healthy rotational share at that spot. I also wouldn't be surprised if Astudillo got some looks there if the team was facing a high strikeout/low walk kind of starter. Perhaps Rosario or whomever is the Twins hottest hitter will get some time there as well. Tommy Pham was easily TB's best hitter after he was acquired but that didn't stop them from batting him lead off in 22 games last year.

  20. How often individual batters call for “time”.
  21. Well if the Atlantic League is willing, maybe that's tested next year. Unless someone's a die-hard Atlantic League fan, I don't know why anyone would be against experimenting in this manner to see what works and what doesn't. I'd love it if they had instead picked the American Association so I could check it out for myself.
  22. Sounds fun! Not all of these things will happen, but I think it's awesome they're getting to set up a science lab with an independent league. I'm really interested in hearing the results. Interesting that the moved pitching rubber is only going to be in place for half of a season. They must be using that as a variable against the other changes.
  23. As long as his theories mesh with Wes Johnson and Baldelli, it all sounds good to me.
  24. Did Phil Hughes take his excised rib with him or did he leave it here? Maybe we can pull a fast one on them.
  25. Tennis is worse, every player runs a racket. Crickets.
