  1. I like Sano's chances of rebounding this year, but I did not like the narrative that this team was hoping that Buxton and Sano would finally emerge and carry this team to glory. They can find other ways to win than through Buxton and Sano. I hate to see anyone injured, but this is OK, I really want the team forced to build an entire team, not just a group of guys on top of two pillars which we have to cross our fingers that they can hold the weight. Then when Sano comes back and starts crushing the leftfield seats, that's just bonus.
  2. Please, Cat Stevens wrote the song, it's got to be his version. But kudos to everyone for not suggesting Rod Stewart.
  3. It seems to me you're implying that the guys working at fangraphs don't know what they're doing by arguing that you don't like the output of fangraphs. I'm arguing that once these guys are hired away, they're likely not using the output of fangraphs, they are talented enough individuals to create new things specific for their new clubs.
  4. I doubt the guys teams are hiring away are using algorithms on fangraphs, otherwise why wouldn't these teams just bookmark fangraphs and instead pay an intern to read it to them? The guys who are getting hired away, and there are a lot of them, are almost certainly good at parsing the information, and also likely able to create new, team specified algorithms, tests, statistics and evaluations.
  5. ****Moderator Note**** Please stop with the unsubstantiated accusations of malpractice and conspiracies. We already did this once upon the original news of the cut, let's not do it again.
  6. Yeah Boswell is a forgotten guy sometimes. 64 wins by the age of 24 and 37 complete games! He was on his way to a great career. Maybe not with the Twins though, they were approaching their "trade everyone" era and while no one liked Billy Martin so getting knocked out by him might not be a great determination of character, just previous to his KO, he himself knocked out Bobby Allison, so, he may not have been a beloved teammate.
  7. I'm not a big fan of TEs. I think more than any other skill position, they are a product of the QB's prerogative.
  8. Does he know that opening day is in Minnesota?!? In March?!?! I thought all the pitchers would have been fighting for the 4th spot in the rotation!
  9. Despite the red flags he still might have been a justifiable signing based on his past results, but that shouldn't stop the team from walking away from him if he's going to take the spot of a better-abled pitcher. If his velocity is decreasing while everyone else's is increasing, there might not be much to salvage.
  10. It tends to work out better if teams evaluate them on velocity, command and workload over last few years instead of the stats on the back of their baseball card. By nature, relievers are always going to be heroes or victims based on small sample sizes but I think there are several more reliable predictors.
  11. According to La Velle, the Twins are in on Kimbrel and Keuchel on one year deals only. A one year for Keuchel is all I'd want too. I'd like Kimbrel on a three year deal though.
  12. I think you're mis-interpreting the situation. Lavine implied they weren't signing big ticket free agents because the window wasn't open, I'm fairly sure he wasn't talking about the relief market which was bottoming out. It's not like the Twins mis-allocated their off season free agent budget because signing most of the available relievers would not have made a significant impact on the budget. This wasn't a financial issue. They must believe that what they have in house is better or can be fixed than most of what was available. Personally, I don't see it, and I would have liked three new bullpen pieces, which would have been easily do-able and affordable, so I hope they know what they're doing. But one thing I do know, I don't want the front office doing things that are a "no brainer to most TD fans" and making decisions based on fan consensus. That sounds like an awful idea, they've got better intel than the fans do. Implying we know better than the front office always makes me cringe, even when I disagree with them, which I am, right now.
  13. I agree that they've likely gotten worse from last year in terms of talent, though minimally, I just don't think they're necessarily worse in terms of wins and losses, because last year they should have won more than 91 games; that was an elite squad. They're still extremely talented as arguably their top four starters are better than anyone else in the division and probably unarguable they have the two best position players in the division. If the projections are based on a clean slate, talent alone, they're probably a 94-98 win team. It's only when last year's record is added that skepticism might suggest otherwise. This team should coast to a division win, but that's the trap, coasting is probably why they underachieved last year and it could open the door for an overachiever this year.
  14. I think Cleveland underachieved last year. They won 91 games but probably should have won 98. A decrease to 94-ish wins would probably look more reasonable had that been the case. And if I had to guess, I might say Cleveland underachieved because they played down to their competition. If that was the case, that might be a good sign that this isn't the kind of team that can switch to the "foot-on-the-throat" mentality. We've seen that around these parts, I'm more than happy to let Cleveland go nowhere in the deadzone that accompanies that mindset. But I still think record-wise, they're probably still top tier.
  15. I wanted a bunch of the free agent relievers, but it's starting to look like the team thinks Wes Johnson is a bigger addition than anyone on the market; there will be crow to eat if that's not the case though. The Twins clearly passed on the relievers due to philosophical or strategic reasons not financial reasons because the bullpen arms were dirt cheap; plenty of good ones even had to settle for MiLB deals. I would have been happy with Clippard, Norris and Warren; I think they all got veteran MiLB deals, which are traditionally right in the Twins wheelhouse. I would have liked some new rotation help but I have a hard time finding fault with how that turned out since I personally didn't like any of the free agents and it appears no teams were trading any good starters this past winter.
  16. It's great to hear how much he liked being here. Feels like the front office made the right decision in not extending him at this point, but it's still too bad it didn't work out. If he was truly impacted by the injury I'd be pretty disappointed. We've heard about athletes playing through stuff without telling the team for a long time; that stuff has to stop. Maybe the training staff has a solution or two. Maybe if the team shuts you down for a few weeks everyone would be better off for it. Or maybe they will suggest you can play through it, but leave that up to the experts I think the "just rub some dirt on it" mentality only helps to serve one's pride. It sounds like Dozier may realize that now.
  17. I don't quite buy it. Under the hypothesis from the author, this would mean had the Twins gone out and signed a bunch of free agents in November then Cleveland would have matched them? I don't think they would have, I think this team was going to shed payroll whether the division was competitive or not. But I also don't think that club is tanking. An elite rotation like that doesn't miss the playoffs very often and they still have easily the two best position players in the whole division.
  18. He’s a baseball player so I assumed it was to rhyme with Ryne Sandburg. It looks like the Twins signed the right Harper this year too.
  19. Flipping Granite for 750K in International Bonus cash? Cool, I figured they’d lose him for nothing anyway and had no qualms doing so. I’d assume most of the current crop of players are gone, but maybe there’s someone specific they have their eye on.
  20. He picked poorly. I offered him a 10 year deal to blow out my driveway for $20 a snow with a $5 mutual option to scrape my windshield.
  21. I suspect after the next CBA, Harper's annual salary is going to be at the low end of top tier free agents and extension candidates. Assuming we're playing baseball after the next CBA.
  22. My concern with Gonsalves has long been that he threw way too many pitches in the minors. If he was as dominant as his numbers seemed to indicate, he should have been getting out of innings quicker and going deeper into games. That was a big red flag. It made me think that he was getting his strikeouts by getting inferior batters to chase out of the zone, which would not work for better hitters at the MLB level. And it didn't. But if you increase velocity, you should have more confidence in your stuff to get guys to miss while throwing over the plate. My outlook could change on him or any pitcher if the team as a whole starts throwing harder.
  23. Maybe 93 is where he tops out. But Seems to me, in March guys are usually several MPH short of where they end up in May. If Wes Johnson has some magic velocity serum he might be the most important person in the organization.
  24. Magill's been on my short list of future DFA candidates, but I'm having second thoughts about him. 96 MPH fastballs and unique curveballs do tend to inspire me. I may just move him from DFA candidate all the way to possible closer. If we're still doing the whole "closer" thing; I'm not sure this club is going to.
  25. I must admit, when I first heard of The Athletic, I too thought it was The Atlantic. I kept wondering why sports writers kept going to an old Boston publication focusing on current events. And I further kept wondering why I couldn't find them when I tried to search the site.
