  1. Yeah, not only could they decide to move on from Adrianza, they could alternately choose to move on from Cron. I'd hope it's Adrianza and his career 80 OPS+ though. For a modern manager there's plenty of room for a guy like Gonzalez though. How often do most teams run out the exact same lineup even two days in a row? Even without an injury, someone in your line up is usually getting a routine rest day or a platoon consideration. Adrianza himself played 114 games last year, and he isn't a guy anyone would intentionally try to figure out how to get at bats for.
  2. With the current roster construction, I think Craig Kimbrel would help more, but I wouldn't say no to Marwin. I wouldn't expect more than league average production from his bat, but average is better than Adrianza can provide. Escobar got 3 years 21M from Arizona. Marwin should get something similar but surely he and Boras will insist on topping that so what, 3 years 24M? That's much lower than end of season predictions.
  3. I'm less confident in a bounce back from these two. Sidearmers in general just seem to have a limited window of success. Most seem to have a novelty about them which works for awhile until batters catch on. Hildenberger doesn't appear to have great command either. I think Reed needs to get back those 2 MPH he lost on his fastball or he's going to get shelled. He doesn't have an offspeed pitch and his slider has never been particularly effective, last year in particular. Not that I'm worried these two couldn't easily be replaced if needed.
  4. Yeah, I probably shouldn't be, but I am surprised by how many above average relievers are being forced into MiLB deals. The players will probably have to cave since the teams have the upper hand, but I'm guessing Bud Norris and Adam Warren will suffer the same fate. Ryan Madson sounds like he might take a stand and just hang up the cleats, that would be sad but good for him.
  5. I don't think San Diego's management will get it done, but I don't think it will be from a lack of trying. They've given out some sizable (but poor in my view) contracts lately, if Preller is a good salesman he could point to their willingness to spend and their touted farm system and convince a free agent that San Diego is in fact in a better spot to continually compete for a championship, even above some of the larger market teams who do not have a good farm system and who are not currently spending money. I think they're destined to crash and burn, but that's not the prevalent view, surely Machado may be one of those convinced otherwise.
  6. I’d like there to be better delegation than under Molitor, but if he goes INTO the season with equal confidence in Reed and Hildenberger, my confidence in Baldelli might take a hit. I want to see those two rebound before I trust them. Reed with his velocity, Hildenberger with his command. Currently I’d be OK if neither made the team if they didn’t prove those things in spring training, which would be difficult.
  7. Jameson and cutsie-poo garbage are typically more appreciated in the game threads, so I hope you saved some of that bottle.
  8. I'm all for putting some of the starters in the pen, but looking back at the best starter-turned-reliever transitions, they almost all took a full season to get their footing and establish themselves. I wanted Clippard. I'll still take Norris, Madson and Warren, Kimbrel too. I'm not too keen on Vincent, I don't trust relievers who throw 89 MPH. I do like the Blake Parker signing, I think he would have been one of the higher under-the-radar guys I would have been in on had he been a free agent to open the year. But if he's not throwing a slider or changeup, he probably needs to throw that curve more. I'd think he'd need better diversity than running with a four seamer and splitter 90% of the time. I would be pretty disappointed if the Twins traded for bullpen help considering this near historic class of free agent relievers; that would scream of choosing money over prospects.
  9. Cleveland gets Tyler Clippard on a MiLB deal. I would have liked that signing.
  10. I'd think it just means that nobody wants to throw a young Dominican teammate under the bus. And I'd guess the reason there is a boot now as opposed to prior to now is that the winter ball season was over and there was no need to put on cleats, or any kind of footwear for that matter. Now he's in Ft. Myers and participating in team activities and they're not going to have him wandering the clubhouse and field all day wearing gauze and a sock. It's stitches, not a broken bone or torn ligament. The boot is most likely just a matter of practicality, not medical necessity.
  11. Have you seen their record? Have you seen their terrible contracts they’ve handed out? It’s not just hindsight, prior to this Machado deal every contract they’ve given out was immediately met with a collective groan from everyone and their grandma.
  12. They also SIGNED James Shields to an absolutely awful contract, as did they Hosmer and Myers. The fact that they fleeced the White Sox is more of an indictment on the White Sox. But congrats to them, better they have Tatis than the Sox. And what does that have to do with the Twins? No one was comparing the two. Liking or disliking what the Twins do or don't do is immaterial to this transaction.
  13. I would have liked Machado, so that's a check mark in the Good column for SD as far as I'm concerned. But I agree with the previous poster both SD and the White Sox seem to make way more terrible decisions than good and don't appear to be great at this modern baseball stuff. I wouldn't trust either of those front offices to run my team, good intentions only get you so far.
  14. Both Manfred and Clark are playing the semantics game. It would be nice if Manfred would acknowledge that while it's possible that all clubs might be trying to win, not all of them are trying to win THIS YEAR. It would then be nice if Clark acknowledged that tanking to re-load has already proven to be a successful strategy as it worked for both the Cubs and Astros. I'm cheering for the players in the next CBA, but I fear in doing so it will make me support a strike which I don't like. The owners need to concede so much more than billionaires are used to conceding.
  15. I would have taken Machado here, but after their terrible Hosmer and Myers deals, I really questing that organization's decision making skills. Maybe third time's a charm.
  16. Can't wait to see you guys down there some day. Not sure which day that is. I have three young kids and a wife, none of whom are terribly interested in sports (fingers crossed with the 20 month old). Asking if I could go to Florida and leave the family for a week sounds like a great way to find myself murdered in my sleep.
  17. Where is his pop coming from?!? He's doing the Denard Span/Byron Buxton no-step swing and it looked like he put about as much effort into that swing as a guy simply trying to foul off a pitch. I really like this guy. He might turn out to be a fad and someone who ends up as a a fun anecdotal footnote in the history books but let's ride this while it's hot. He might be someone you roll with, though perhaps not something you try to understand how it works.
  18. I'm not a fan of many of today's sports reporters, but so far, whether it be the Twins front office or Manfred here, these guys aren't putting themselves in the position where they have to answer questions that they weren't already prepped for. Do we know where this Manfred quote came from? I can't believe it would have been from a presser, more likely from a MLB Twitter feed or from a sit down with some brown-noser who had to have his questions pre-approved. Though I'd be all for if front officer personnel were required to be in the locker room and take questions with the manager and players after the games.
  19. I'd like to see Berrios extended now, but seeing as the two contemporaries used as examples were a year ahead of him in service time, it will probably have to wait until next year. No idea if the Twins want to extend him (they better want to) but Berrios' camp will probably see that he should have more value this time next year.
  20. Berrios is the only starter on roster locked into a rotation spot for 2020. I would not assume this to be necessarily permanent. If Wes Johnson is as good as advertised, I'd rather have Romero at his side all season long as opposed to Rochester. Maybe he's the key to unlocking that changup anyway.
  21. He cut his heel? Unless it was from the kid from Pet Semetary I’m not worried.
  22. So he’s a cross between Ron Gardenhire and Bill James? Sounds good.
  23. I think it’s just the nature of free agency. Guys don’t become free agents until after they’ve peaked. Forgetting the steroid era, what percentage of players are better in their 30’s then they were in their 20’s?
  24. I am encouraged by his openness to accept help and change. Changing his entire approach was the only path I was at all interested in with him. We’ll have to see if he puts his money where his mouth is.
  25. Two more of them, Gordon and Gonsalves had regularly been top 100 guys. Probably another half dozen of them or so have high enough ceilings that they could find themselves on the list in the future.
