  1. Does Baldelli have a choice except between LaMarre, Wade and Miller? Do we know if Kepler, Buxton, Sano, Cruz and Gonzalez are good to go? I think it's also fairly offensive to claim that the manager and the players don't care about winning.
  2. Not to mention he was also fired late in the year by Detroit, which also seemed like odd timing. I might think it’s to let the replacement get his feet wet before the offseason starts, but that wouldn’t explain why it seems to only happen to Dombrowski.
  3. I think developing a strong farm system is important even if you are spending money. He's a square peg for a round hole in 2019. Nothing has to be his fault, there doesn't have to be something that he's done wrong, but most folks on this site were asking for a change in Gardy and Ryan's 20th century approach to baseball long before the team hit rock bottom; our team was absolutely not proactive. With their payroll the Red Sox will never be at the nadir the Twins were at, but they sure can wallow in mediocrity if they don't watch out. What's wrong with seeing new trends and adjusting your team's strategy, especially once your arch rival has made it clear that they're now king of the division?
  4. I'm all for seeing Kirilloff, but if the Twins need another bat, wouldn't Wiel make more sense? He's been a much better hitter at a higher level this year. Both would be a 'cross-your-fingers' corner outfielder anyway.
  5. It's hard to argue with the results, but I don't see anything in there showing the players are actually taking fewer games off. This is the closest I see: That’s why he has pushed back bus time to the ballpark on the road, and has canceled once-daily batting practice nearly a third of the time — “show-and-go” is the baseball term for it, and it’s written on the clubhouse whiteboard at least once or twice a week. Baldelli has also mapped out regular off days for every player on the roster, and downplayed any notion of “the Twins way” in favor of “do what works for you.” The Twins players had off days with Gardy and Molitor too, but they weren't mapped out, it was just usually Sundays. The extra rest guys are getting seems like it's mostly less BP and not having to get to the ballpark long before necessary.
  6. That's great, they have 15M less on the books. But that 15M isn't going to get them the pitching they need to over take the Yankees. Even so, we've already seen that nearly every team in the league is now shying away from big ticket free agents in favor of developing their own cost effective roster. I don't think it's out of line to suggest that this is not Dombrowski's strength. So why aren't the Red Sox allowed to get on with modern baseball trends? Heck, they have Bill James and he basically was the impetus for new ideas and evolution.
  7. Not at all. I was pointing out that their stud young core didn't get it done this year and considering the Yankees have both a better farm, deeper pockets and their own stud young core, it looks like the Red Sox have been usurped and likely for the foreseeable future. Even while they spend on free agents that team really needs to restock its talent pool, and Dombrowski has not proven to be particularly capable at that skill set.
  8. Who has been resting more than expected? It seems to me we are even seeing fewer 'Get-away-day' Sunday lineups than we saw with Gardy and Molitor.
  9. I'm all for resting the players to keep them fresh. But are the Twins really doing it much more than normal? Polanco is the only regular batter who has been healthy all year, and he's only missed 7 games. By contrast, last year Kepler was the team's only season long healthy starter and missed 6 games. I'm thinking all of this discussion has only come up because Sano didn't pinch hit for LaMarre yesterday and we weren't privy to the news that his back was acting up and he wasn't available?
  10. I'm not a Red Sox fan at all, but I think they were pretty smart getting out ahead of this one. Dombrowski gutted the Red Sox farm and hasn't done anything to restock it. Some will say, "so what" because the Red Sox are big spenders, but even they are going to have a hard time re-signing all of their stud young core, a stud young core which should be pointed out wasn't good enough to make the playoffs. But more importantly, the Yankees have not gutted their farm AND they will be able to spend on par with the Red Sox. Dombrowski has put the Sox in position to be behind their division rivals for the foreseeable future. If I was a Red Sox fan, I'd thank Dave for trading for Chris Sale and using him to win the WS last year, and curse him for extending Sale last spring and not getting extensions done with Betts, Benintendi and Devers while they were still affordable.
  11. Yeah, there looks like a correlation, but only one year of results is probably too small to draw any conclusions at this time. But yeah, an offensive surge unlike anything we've seen before, something in the range of a 100 win season and an emphasis on good depth on the bench because of the plan to rest players. I'm a fan and I hope they continue doing it.
  12. I thought Rooker or Wiel would have been added to the 40-man. I suppose only two rehab games in the GCL wasn't going to prepare Rooker enough though. Most years Wiel split his time between 1B and the OF, he hardly got any reps in the OF this year though with all the quality AA and AAA OF in the system. Raley would have been an option as well, but he only had a week in the GCL after missing all summer.
  13. I think this topic is worthy of its own thread. Kepler going down would be a big blow.
  14. I agree, this team should do some bullpenning down the stretch. I might even give Poppin a call and try to use him along with your four listed above for the yeoman's work. I might try using Graterol as an opener as well.
  15. It would matter to me if I was considering re-signing him. I’d feel a lot better that his mid-season success wasn’t due to something unsustainable without cheating.
  16. The starting pitchers have been so streaky, I don't think we've seen the end of the roller coaster ride. Presuming Gibson makes his next couple starts along with the rest of the regular crew, any one of them could end up as the game 1 guy and any one of them could end up the odd one out. I also think the odd one out will end up in the pen, probably at the expense of Graterol or Littel; they'll want a long man. I hope Graterol gets more audition time and earns a spot though. Seeing as Miller hasn't seen a PA yet, I don't think he's making the roster barring an injury, probably two. I think Cave is a near lock and if there is an injury, I'd bet they roll with their season long plan C's; Gonzalez/Adrianza/Arraez in the outfield.
  17. Milwaukee is starting to look like they may find themselves on the wrong side of that equation by the end of the season. Heck, maybe even some time next week.
  18. My vote is a hypocritical yes. Anyone asking me to work 162 days a year when (if) I’m 80 is going to get an earful.
  19. Clearly. You hang out abnormally in game threads
  20. My (ridiculous) take: The Yankees have a questionable rotation and a strong bullpen, while the Astros are just the opposite. If I want the Twins best chance of advancing one round, I'd take the Yankees first. BUT, if I want the Twins best chance of advancing to the WS, I want the Yankees 2nd. My thoughts being that the Yankees are going to run away with their division and can rest their pen late in the regular season, so I would like Oak/TB/Cle to force them to put some innings on those arms, possibly keeping some of them unavailable or limited early in the next series.. So far this year, the Twins OPS in the first 5 innings is about 100 points higher than it is in the rest of the game. I like the offense's chances against Houston's top end starters more than I do New York's top end relievers, so if I got to pick one I'd rather not get extra rest, it'd be the relievers.
  21. Going 20-3 the rest of the way and snagging the number 1 seed so as New York and Houston have to face each other first sounds like a daisy of a plan to me.
  22. Watching how Cincinnati, Cleveland, SF, AZ and the Mets have operated of late, I don’t think there’s simply contender and non-contender buckets anymore. And I don’t think many teams are predictable in their actions any longer.
  23. Heck no, unlike recent years we ain’t losing 90 games this season, woohoo!
  24. I'd normally think he'd accept the QO, but there won't be a ton of quality free agent starters available next year so another team might be willing to spend the pick to get him. As for his salary, if Lance Lynn can get 3/30M after last season, you'd think Odorizzi has a shot at 3/36M, which might be more attractive than the QO figure considering he'll be 30 years old. So unless this team plans on tossing money around and seriously thinks Gerrit Cole would come to Minnesota (a Southern CA kid? I'd bet Minnesota is already crossed off of his list), I'd probably gamble and offer the QO to Odorizzi knowing that the worst that can happen is overpaying for one year of a serviceable but average starter.
