  1. You say that as if that very nucleus isn't still intact and in the midst of the current season! Edit: ninja'd by @chpettit19. Though, I'm a bit more tongue-in-cheek!
  2. That's fair, perhaps not really the right word. I don't see that they have anything left to prove in the minors, so it doesn't really serve much purpose to leave them there and let Kepler and Sano continue to circle the drain. The direction is clearly to start new, so to me, the only reasonable approach is to move forward by allowing the new crop to start to push out the old.
  3. This might be what I'm watching for most during this offseason. How do they figure out how the new pieces fit now that Larnach, Kirilloff and Rooker have emerged. They've got some of the old core hanging on in RF and 1B and pieces of the next group coming up needing to play somewhere. I think this is an inherent problem with drafting bat-first guys; how do the pieces fit? As a guy that values run prevention, the approach seems a bit too incoherent for my liking. But that is the bed they made, now they've got to lay in it. The other are is middle infield. I really don't want them moving Polanco back to SS. But I'd also like to keep Arraez's bat in the lineup, but don't know where to play him if 2B is filled. The super-utility role doesn't really fit him all that well either. Just one thing on my list of things that drives me nuts about how baseball has evolved, I guess.
  4. I think the trade deadline left enough talent on the roster to build around and actually have some respectability in 2022. They may not truly compete, but they should be heading in that direction. Trading all of these guys seems not only unnecessary, but counterproductive. I could see trading Kepler if Kirilloff needs a position because Sano is still around. Buxton should only be traded if they know they won't be able to extend him.
  5. I'm in limbo. I'm not confident, nor not confident. As others have said, this past offseason really stunted any momentum they really had. So far though, that has been the outlier. The lack of seriousness being taken towards the pitching staff this past offseason really, really bothers me. It comes off as cocky. For a franchise that hasn't won a playoff game, let alone a WS, in what seems like a millennium, that level of complacency is absurd. But, I do like what they were able to get at the trade deadline. I can see that the farm system is bottom heavy, so I think that we've yet to see the full potential of their ability to develop players. The tendency to draft hit first players only is brow raising. I'll concede that there are some benefits, but I value defense quite a bit. This upcoming offseason will be key for me to form a full opinion.
  6. In fairness, I did say that my preference was to keep him. In a season like this, and with the prospects coming up behind him, it's not an unreasonable question. That's what losing teams do in order to try to improve. The Cubs just did the same thing with the remainder of their WS winning core. You're right that it is more appropriate for a different thread though.
  7. Fair question. I'd like to hold onto him, but wouldn't be too devastated if they did deal him. I'd at least wait until next season's trade deadline to see if those prospects can actually get to the bigs before I do though.
  8. It's nice to see the team still has some fight late in games. Wins and losses aren't all that important to me at this point in the season, but it is still nice to have some respectability.
  9. Garver had PH earlier in the game. Astudillo was still on the bench though.
  10. baby steps. Not striking out then the hits follow.
  11. I'm listening on the radio and these base hits sound like they're crushed. Doesn't sound like Barnes is fooling anyone.
  12. Where leadoff doubles go to die...
  13. Clutch two out hitting. Very nice.
  14. Didn't have a choice in the matter. Something about required curriculum. Surely would have been valedictorian if it were not for history class. /s
  15. Man...no wonder I did so poorly in history class.
  16. That seems kinda ominous. Hopefully everything works out and he heals up quickly.
  17. I'm also wondering if the move to 2B is simply more comfortable for him, allowing him to relax a little bit more. SS always seemed like a stretch for him defensively.
  18. They've got to go after at least one quality starting pitcher and a couple of bullpen arms. Assuming Rooker shows he belongs, I wouldn't re-sign Cruz unless you get him on the cheap. Spend the money on pitching instead. Re-sign/extend Pineda and Buxton. I wouldn't be opposed to bringing back Simmons, but it would have to be another one year deal. I'm hoping that Lewis and/or Martin push to fill that role sooner rather than later.
