  1. I think he's the biggest wild card in the lineup. He could go in either direction from last year.
  2. Agreed, and I forgot about that change. In the end, we're all speculating here with little real info.
  3. I question if this offseason wasn't more about posturing by the biggest market teams to get rid of the luxury tax in the next CBA: "see what happens without us."
  4. Team leaders questioned a young Morneau's maturity too. I don't remember the pitchforks coming for him. (I understand that Morneau didn't have an MLB investigation at the time, but people were saying this stuff before that news broke as well.)
  5. At least 7 pitchers (and probably closer to 10) will start games for the Twins this year. Not concerned about this at all.
  6. I think it's all of the factors mentioned combined. The market is attempting to correct itself and spiralling out of control (8 year deals, etc), but it's also alarming that so many players remain unsigned. Lynn, Cobb, Walker: these aren't peripheral or one-dimensional talents like we've seen waiting to sign in previous years.
  7. That's not my understanding of arbitration. I'm thinking of arbitration outside of MLB, but usually the arbitrator is the decision maker. He or she is not assisting a negotiation between two parties, but brokering a third party deal. Neither player nor team negotiates. They've traded that right to have a so-called neutral third party make the decision instead.
  8. Is preferring to negotiate instead of taking a hardline stance, "poor" negotiation? I'd argue the opposite. Refusal to negotiate isn't negotiation at all.
  9. I'd be shocked if they cut a familiar veteran (Grossman) based on Spring Training games. If he looks equally bad on practice field, maybe. I'd say the 25th spot is between an extra pitcher and the second back-up infielder. As someone already said, it mostly relies on Sano's status. Most teams don't cut vets until May. Granite is in AAA until then.
  10. I find this (bold) idea bizarre. Why would an agent mock an employer for preferring to reach agreements with their clients? How could that possibly be a negative. If agents previously thought the Twins' wouldn't draw a firm line, isn't that a good thing for their clients? To nitpick, I'd happily go to court if it meant I could get "a fairly small amount, just $355,000." In any economic realm, that's still a 7% difference of income, which is a pretty big deal. Though in this case, it would probably just cover agent fees for the process.
  11. There's no reason for him to sign now, other than avoiding arbitration. What do the Twins or Buxton gain by signing a contract that doesn't extend into FA years? Less paperwork?
  12. If the league-wide trend from last year continues...everyone.
  13. The only way Vargas sticks is if the Twins trade Grossman, which could happen but I doubt it will. And then all Vargas would do is pinch hit for the catcher and in select matchups. I suspect he'll be a final day cut from the roster, then he'll spend the season bouncing through the waiver wire with more time between teams than on the field, much like Arcia did. He's a AAAA player.
  14. I take very little that's said between the players and the on-air talent seriously, especially if it's said off camera and later referred to. These guys are basically teammates. They travel and work together everyday. There's a lot of context left out.
  15. Tell that to Kendrys Morales. I kid. I mostly agree.
  16. Exactly. And he's going to be asked about it in every city they play in this year. He might as well say it now and get it over with. Plus, his answer was basically the company line every player gives. Even if he's negotiating a new contract as we speak, this is what I'd expect to hear.
  17. In my 1986-era Apple IIe game of Micro League Baseball I'm pretty sure they only allowed 2 visits.
  18. They did cut the commercial time this year, actually.
  19. They'll probably have to do something like the NFL, where the player actually takes longer and plays up an injury to make sure they notice it. In other words: making the games longer.
  20. Have there been any signs on MLB wrapping up their investigation? I think Sano starts the season on the roster and it's closer to June when they do whatever they do. Other than that, nothing jumps out at me. Given how rosters work, I assume Aybar and Pressly have the month of April to sink or swim.
  21. While I don't like LoMo as a person, I like this as a baseball move. And that's why I'm here. Solid signing, great price, and in theory it could mean moving on from both Grossman and Vargas, which would give much better flexibility to the bench. That is, if they can trade off the pair for something with a little value. I doubt they do that though. They'll probably keep Grossman as the 4th OF even if I prefer better defense out of that role.
  22. There are two types of stones. Each has the opposite treatment, meaning an accurate diagnosis is important. But, yeah, vegetarianism as a cause...where's that eye roll emoji?
  23. A good time to sneak someone through. Nobody has seen him pitch in a year.
  24. Gomez & Span in the same outfield again...for now.
