    "a legitimate ace at the top." The most important six words in the whole article. Do what you want with the bullpen. But DO NOT TRADE JOE RYAN. A bullpen is useless without a rotation anchored by an ace. Pay the man. Overpay the man. I don't care. 5-6 years, $90-$130 million. Think Zach Wheeler contract. I will never disagree with this team's not overpaying for outside free agents but at some point you have to pull the trigger to keep your own guys. This is one of those cases. He is locked into arbitration in 2027 probably at a cost of less than Pablo Lopez' $19 million. Lopez will most likely be gone after 2027. Pay the man.

    Folks throw around 2027 like there will actually be a season next year. There might be. But there also might not be. With that being possible, I don't want to be sitting here in 20 (or more months if the start of a 2028 season is pushed back) not knowing what guys like Jenkins, Rodriguez, Gonzalez, Culpepper and Mendez are going to look in a big league uniform facing big league pitching. Get 'em up here. Do we REALLY want to keep wondering if some of the guys on the current roster are ever going to amount to a hill of beans or are we ready to see what we got on the horizon?

    Reminds me a bit of another young left handed pitcher who spent four seasons getting a few starts here and there but pitching more often out of the pen than the rotation and by his fifth season became a starter and was rewarded with an award--The Cy Young.

    You seem worried about records vs winning teams. Only one team in last year's playoffs was more than 2 games over .500 against winning teams. No American League playoff team was more than one game over .500 against winning teams. Even the two time champion Dodgers were under .500 Win the games you're supposed to win and let the rest sort itself out.

    "Honestly, I think the best outfielders are former infielders." Um, Grady, obviously you weren't here in 2016 for the Miguel Sano Experience. What Grady failed to add is that the best designated hitters are former infielders who are also not good outfielders. Maybe that's where Keaschal is destined for. With almost half dozen outfielders (Fedko, Rodriguez, Mendez, Jenkins, Rhoden, some guy named Ben Ross) waiting in the wings (yes, some in various phases of injury recovery) in St. Paul I'm not sure there is room in the big league outfield for failed infielders. Nor do I believe it's a good idea. Yes, that might mean you as well Austin Martin. And I'm ok with that.

    Buxton no. I'd find a way to keep Jeffers. Might involve spending money. Ryan HELL NO.

    That 61-101 pace thing seems irrational since I have it on good authority that they are highly unlikely to only play winning teams this or any other year.

    His presence will keep those younger players in St. Paul or on the bench. He's a former 1st round draft pick out of college who has been in the big leagues for six years and never hit 20 home runs or driven in more than 60 runs. I would say he's NOT the model I'd want for younger players.

    as we saw last year, if you make someone available, someone will take them. Worst case scenario, attach him to Jeffers. Even as well as he is playing he does you little good if he's in the way of Rodriguez, Jenkins, Fedko, Gonzalez, Mendez, maybe even Rhoden and (gulp) Sabato.

    It's nice to dream but it's not going to happen. Might not even be an all-star game starter. Yes, I know, RBI is a flawed stat. An argument usually made by someone arguing the value of a guy with few RBI. 36. 'nuff said. That being said, do NOT trade him.

    Trade anyone on the roster. NOT named Byron Buxton, Joe Ryan or Ryan Jeffers. I don't care if we don't sign other team's big name free-agents. Spend the money to keep your own.

    Anyone standing in the way of Jenkins, Culpepper, Gonzalez, Rodriguez, Fedko (never mind, he's here) Mendez and (gulp) maybe Sabato can go. That leaves room for ONE utility IF. Don't really care who.

    Given that the average MLB starting pitcher throws less than 6 innings and that teams will tend to throw some lefties out of the bullpen against our predominantly left handed lineup I'd not worry too much and would expect to see Fedko get into at least three of those 5 games and get at least 5 total plate appearance in that stretch. Maybe even one start against a righty who might be known to not dominate right handed hitters.

    Thought the same thing. And then I remembered that Brian Duensing is still available. AND that we haven't had Michael Tonkin on the roster yet this season.

    I don't think MLB is going to make any rule changes that would penalize a team with the loss of the DH. Not when they changed the rule to GIVE the Dodgers more Otani in that spot.

    More often than not, trading a star player works out great--for the team trading for said star. I hate to keep beating a dead horse but we only have to look back to this week to see a player acquired for the best pitcher the Twins have developed in a generation traded BACK to the other team for three gym socks and a baseball with the cover ripped off AND we are learning that the other piece of that trade can't hit pitchers who wear their glove on the hand closest to the first base dugout. Anyone care to go back to the decade of wandering thru the desert that followed the KG trade? I for one, have never gotten over the euphoria of the Troy Williamson era following the R. Moss trade. I suppose I should relish the handful of hall of famers acquired in exchange for Rod Carew. Or the All-Star half season Roy Smalley put up a few years removed from being acquired in the Bert Blylevin trade. Keep Buxton. Keep Joe Ryan.
