    I thought, since he was on the 60 day IL, we could just keep him there until ST. Maybe I was wrong. I dunno. Colina isn't going to make or break anything but the FO has made enough head scratching moves that this could be another of them. Still, he's 25 with serious history of arm injuries. I don't like this FO but I'll reserve judgment for now.

    How about Gordon as a back up CF? I was impressed by him when he got the opportunity to play there but that's just the eye test. I don't know how well the defensive stats liked him. I'm also not sure how much more we can expect out of his bat. Over a full season, his bat was so bad he'd acquire something like .6 WAR. But if he could duplicate his AAA numbers (or something close to them), he could be a solid back up at many positions.

    That would make sense. I'm not sure that doesn't mean they don't try to "win" a trade. The Padres, Giants and Pirates(?) I think all got accused of hiding injury reports about players they traded, IIRC.

    And now Hand is on the COVID list, even though he is likely vaccinated as well. That's not good. I think some of our secondary players were pretty adamant about not getting the vaccine. Hopefully this doesn't start running through the locker room.

    I think he wants multiple years and the Twins probably just want one. His agent will shop him around to see if he can find that second year somewhere. I like Pineda as my fifth starter but I'm really worried that the Twins view him as their opening day starter. We need several pitchers better than him and we have none in-house, which means we have to trade or sign them in free agency. So I would wait on signing Pineda to try and get the better pitchers first.

    I think Rooker's future sort of depends on what the FO thinks about 2022. If we're rebuilding, trading Buxton, and going to be a sub-.500 team again, it makes sense to hold onto him, give him the starting DH spot for the first three months and see what we have. If the Twins think they can compete for the Central, he's probably a 40 man casualty.

    To be clear, I think Houston absolutely gets a W for this trade but the Twins could get a W in a few years as well. That's, frankly, the best kinds of trades because you don't poison the well with other teams. Alcala could easily turn into a dominant bullpen arm and this ends up being us trading 2018 Pressly for the 2022-2024 version of Pressly. That would be a nice result for the Twins.

    But I think this is part of the pattern. Ynoa for Garcia? Gil for Cave? Baddoo, Wells, Goodman, Chargois (and others) for nothing? The Escobar and Dozier trades don't look great. 3 lottery tickets for Dyson? Kintzler for Watson? Dumping Hughes and a comp pick to save payroll? Harper for McMahon? Even the Graterol and the comp for Maeda is looking bad. Each of these moves are, individually, defensible. But, man, they aren't great moves. For me, it's a sign that the Twins FO doesn't evaluate talent correctly and, worse, fails to understand the talent it has.

    This might be some slight repackaging of the trade to the fanbase in that Alaca was supposed to be a starter and now we're resigned ourselves to hoping he's a 60-70 inning relief pitcher. He did look good at the end of the year. He'll be 26 next year so he's pretty much what he is. Celestino's failures at the majors were expected but he's been impressive at AAA. Looks like a worst case scenario is 4th outfielder. It's a solid return. But the problem with the trade goes a bit more than that. It was clear that the Twins didn't know what they had in Pressly, he took off in Houston and then he signed a team friendly extension to stay there. He made two all-star teams and closed out a world series. In four years with Houston he's managed over 5 WAR in about 160 innings (not counting 22 post-season games), In 85 innings, Alaca hasn't reached 1 WAR. The problem was, once again, this FO failed to value the talent they had in the system.

    I don't want to derail the topic but the Twins said back when payroll was lower than it had to be that they weren't going to spend money just to push payroll up when they had the young guys they wanted to play anyway. They've also said that there wasn't any reason to spend big when we were rebuilding or retooling and we could plug those holes from inside. So we have decades of the team admitting they kept payroll lower than it had to be, even when we were making the playoffs. We've never had a corresponding era of ownership pushing payroll above where it "should" be because it was time to move all in. Right now, we have an MVP-type player in his prime and a strong offensive nucleus around him. This was the time for ownership to step up and say, "pitching sucked this year, we'll figure it out next year and bring in the arms this team needs to compete." But they didn't. They traded the one good pitcher we had. So payroll should be high enough to keep the window of opportunity open and if FO and ownership mistakes mean that number is raised even higher, so be it. I've spent 30 years listening to this small payroll crap. Until MLB opens their books to the union, cries of poverty are BS. Next years payroll should be big enough to sign at least two of Rodon, Gausman, Thor, Stroman, Ray, Scherzer. Plus a guy like Matz and Dylan Bundy. They can go overbudget for a few years, if that's even over budget.

    I'm just finishing Haunting on Hill House with my daughter and will go onto Bly Manor next. Is Midnight Mass scary? I thought it looked more like a depressing drama.

    Danztler, who is vaccinated, tests positive for COVID. Hopefully, it's just asymptomatic but he might not be able to play Sunday.

    I did like the Jeffers/Larich draft and think both will be solid MLers. Good on them on taking a chance on Jeffers in the second round.

    We need to create a pitching staff that will be able to cover 1500 or so innings. He can solidly cover 60-70. He's a pretty obvious arb guy and an asset they'll move at the deadline next year.

    I think Severino and maybe Funderburk will be put on the 40 man or should be. The Baddoo and Wells fiasco from last year will probably keep the FO a bit gun-shy to let those two be exposed.

    Is Buxton going to go somewhere and load up on PEDS? Also, isn't it great how ownership has completely persuaded the fan base that low payrolls were so natural that no one blames the Pohlads for not paying to keep Ortiz and are willing to accept payroll as a reason to not pay Berrios or Buxton?

    I look at this more as damning with faint praise. The only reason they have as good as a system (and I think it's quite debatable whether it's better than the one they inherited) is because this years team sucked so badly they were able to add Martin, Woods and Ryan to their top 10. They were supposed to compete and have a system that would augment and bolster a winning club. They completely failed to do that.

    1-3. Gads. I know there's an extra game and all but this doesn't really feel like a winning team this year. Feels like we're really wasting some offensive potential too. 7-10? 8-9? Strange to have odd number of games.

    I'm quite worried that the idea that "we weren't that bad after mid-May" wins out and we deceive ourselves on how bad this team was. 8th worst record in all baseball, 3rd worse in AL. They need to somehow figure out how to get a pitching staff that can cover 1500 or so innings and they have basically nothing to rely on right now. Essentially, ownership has to step up and pay big in free agency. If not, the Twins should just blow it all up, trade everyone with any value, and look forward to 2024.
