  1. Well, that's what those weight loss supplements are for!
  2. Yep, that should kill his trade value a lot.
  3. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/07/quick-hits-yankees-span-giants-broxton-mets.html#disqus_thread Nice to hear the Twins aren't trading him for a 4th OFer.
  4. Twins. I think a potential future of Sano, Rosario, Buxton, Hicks and Arcia is pretty solid. Terry Ryan has shown that he can switch the teams nucleus without requiring 5 years. The 02-04 playoff Twins merged into the Mauer/Morneau playoff Twins pretty well. This current team, while putting up a pretty crappy w-l record, doesn't feel as helpless as last years team. I suspect the Twins will be back in the playoffs (losing in the first round, so it won't matter to some) much faster than the Royals.
  5. It's better than his "Gardy/Andy ruined Redman" rant.
  6. I think it's also worth pointing out that, as bad as they've been, Slowey and Blackburn have had some good seasons as starters - they have more combined 2 WAR seasons than Joba and Hughes have had for the Yanks. I agree with rocketpig that the Twins drafts have been iffy but it's a bit too early to write off guys like Gibson, Hicks, Benson, etc. And some of the drafts, in total, have been bad. The 1st round of the 07 draft was pretty weak.
  7. BA included him in the prospect hot sheet today. "Because the Twins don't have a short-season club, CF Max Kepler is getting a second run through the Appalachian League. If you're going to repeat a level, it pays to dominate it, and that's what Kepler is doing now. He had four extra-base hits in his first 21 games, then produced five extra-base hits in a four-game stretch, including home runs in three straight games. The 19-year-old has the sixth-highest OPS in the league (.958) and nearly a 2-1 walk-strikeout ratio"
  8. MLBtraderumors notes the Reds are scouting Span. Span makes so much sense for them that I think something will happen soon. Reds also have a tradeable supp pick that they could add in if they wanted to.
  9. I think a college shortstop, who is supposed to be able to stick in the MI, with power isn't usually available at 30. IIRC, most scouts thought that Michael could develop some gap power. In any event, it seems like a normal 30ish pick to me.
  10. Good point, hadn't thought of that.
  11. And, just to add to that, 3 teams the Twins could be interested in trading with have tradable picks - Reds, Pirates, Balt (although Balt is probably best served by not doing anything).
  12. Yeah, that pick could be a nice addition but it might not be that valuable either. Picks in the 30-40 range aren't locks by any means. The Twins might want to focus on known prospects.
  13. Oh, I'm not so sure his few months don't resemble a 1st rd pick. There were several players from 4 yr college programs drafted around him that haven't made it to A+ yet. Other guys are struggling in A+ at 21, just like him. I like his plate discipline and, obviously, as a MI, he'll never hit for power but I think he is, more or less, comparable to other recent late first round draft picks.
  14. Yeah, he seems to be settling in now.
  15. It might be a stretch to say Sano is having a disappointing season. From BA today: (MPLS): Is Miguel Sano having a disappointing season? Jim Callis: Not at all. He hasn't maintained his fast start, but he's showing tremendous power in the Midwest League at age 19. We knew coming in that he needed to make more contact and improve his defense, so that shouldn't be a surprise. But, if Hicks doesn't crash in Aug, I do think he'll be a top prospect again. Probably not as high as Sano (sitting in the 20 range) but certainly in the top 100 again.
  16. Well, not a lot has changed since the last update but Hicks has had a nice July and is now hitting .275/.365/.437 w/9 homers, a career high for him. His strike out rate is also at a career high - 22% - and his walk rate is at a low - 12%. But this might be a good thing. The knock on Hicks had been that he was too patient and looking for walks, now it seems he might be finding his pitch. His isolated power - .162 - is his best since rookie ball. He's certainly starting to have the season a lot of us were hoping for. His OPS by month has been .824 (April) .660 (May) .801 (June) .979 (July) so he's really had one bad month and three solid or better months. And his splits are continuing to improve so let's hope that this continues. If he keeps this up he should be back in the top prospect rankings again.
  17. Yeah, and I think I said something like "you're nuts!" My bad.
  18. In fairness to Wimmers, some people did like him. Sickels at minorleagueball gave him a B+ rating in his first ranking, making him #2 Twins prospect and baseball america put him in their honorable mention his first eligible year. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2010/10/16/1755909/minnesota-twins-top-20-prospects-for-2011
  19. Yep, he was a good pick. TJ surgery is unfortunate but I'm glad the Twins made a pick like that. (Just that Trout turned out to be some super insane talent).
  20. Good points, I liked the Gibson pick at the time and still do. I just wish we had Trout using 20/20 hindsight. On Wimmers, I wasn't thrilled with the pick and wanted the Twins to do something else although I didn't know what the something else should be. I remember a lot of angst from fans for the Twins not taking HS pitching arm - Stetson Allie - but I didn't want him either. I understood the logic of the Wimmers pick but just didn't like it.
  21. Obviously, all of these things help the Twins. I think Votto's injury is the biggest event for us, since Reds are in 'win-now' mode. Span, to me, seems like a better fit for the Reds, they have crappy play from CF and no good lead off hitter.
  22. Yeah, that Wimmers pick hurt. I also regret not taking Trout over Gibson but I still have hope for Gibson. Wasn't a big fan of the Wimmers pick in the first place.
  23. In the latest ask BA column, Callis suggests that Buxton would be #21 in baseball, one spot ahead of Sano. He put 7 recent draftees and one international signing in the new top 50.
  24. Yeah, you've mentioned that you hope he blows his arm out several times already. I assume you're making this wish based on your own high standards of moral conduct.
  25. Gotcha, and I agree.
