  1. Any idea where the Twins want to go to?
  2. ??? Randy Johnson certainly had two plus pitches (Fastball and slider). He had an avg third pitch. His K/BB ratio is 3.25, good for 30th all time. Ate innings. Not sure how Sickels article indicates he wasn't a #1 pitcher. "For me, a Number One starter is a guy who anchors your rotation, will be in line for the All-Star game most seasons, and is on the pre-season candidate list for the Cy Young Award. The exact style can vary between pitchers, but the results have to be there." Certainly had the results.
  3. Probably things like not exploding when things start unraveling or how competitive a guy is or how hard he'll work. Sickels pointed to Grienke as a guy who has make up questions.
  4. Sickels has a nice article at minor league ball on defining the different sorts of pitchers. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2012/8/7/3226335/defining-1-2-3-4-5-starters Baseball prospectus had similar definitions for their pitching categories as well.
  5. Houston is playing some real bad ball here: http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=23688849&source=MLB&gid=2012_08_06_wasmlb_houmlb_1
  6. Scouts love his power potential - heck, his most common comparisons was Justin Upton. TR compared him to Sizemore. I think some fan posts might have suggested that his lack of HR in HS meant he didn't have power but those were silly posts.
  7. Span still has the most trade value and Revere is an obvious in-house replacement for him. I still think Span should be moved this off season. He's a 4.5-5 WAR player under a great contract, if the Twins can't get a Latos/Gonzalez/Pence like return for him, hold onto him and we have this OF arrangement again next year.
  8. I swear I read somewhere that Berrios might be one of the fastest to the majors high schoolers picked in the last draft but now I can't find that link. It was based on him being physically mature and having played in a lot more competition baseball in PR than a normal HS kid.
  9. Since the last update, Hicks has slightly increased his triple slash line to .278/.377/.466 and he's shown nice improvement in his plate discipline, too. His krate has fallen to 20% and his walk rate has increased to 13%. His ISO is .169. He has 27 SB in 37 chances (73%). And he now has an OPS above .800 from both sides of the plate. He's having a really nice year.
  10. I'm a bit confused on how people can blame Gardy on this. Gardy played him in 154 games last year - gave him over 600 PA - and he responded with an 86 OPS+ and a negative WAR. And then Gardy gave him 6 weeks and let his put up a .494 OPS before he was sent down. Seems like Gardy gave him all the opportunities in the world. Far more than he should've frankly. And yet some people honestly think he was traded b/c Gardy didn't like his attitude? Really?
  11. I like that the Twins are big players in different areas of the world. Here's hoping Mr. Guyer has a long productive career for us.
  12. Just checking. I've worked at some offices where the guy who runs the website hasn't a clue about how to fix something like this.
  13. Don't take this the wrong way or anything but do you know what you're doing?
  14. In his baseball america chat today - http://www.baseballamerica.com/chat/?1344011152 - "Can you suggest a sleeper in the Twins system for weary Twins fans? Ben Badler: We'll go for a deep cut: Felix Jorge in the GCL. Not sure if he'll remain a starter, but huge power arm potential."
  15. If I were the Twins and I could get Lee for just his contract, I'd do it. But I'm also a firm believer that the Twins payroll could be substantially higher than what they have stated. If it stays in the 95-100 range, then obviously, it'll never happen.
  16. Who is Bubba Sparxxx? I don't trust the name enough to google it at work.
  17. The best thing that can happen for the Twins is that the Dodgers and Reds both fail embarrassingly in the playoffs and highlight their needs for Morneau and Span. Not saying we would trade either in the offseason but those would be two teams that might really regret not making moves for them this week.
  18. One other thing (IIRC), a player can be put on waivers and pulled back three times, after that, he can't be pulled back.
  19. In theory, the Twins could claim him and not give up anything, just let Philly take a salary dump. Not going to happen of course, but they could do it and get an ace type pitcher merely for the cost.
  20. http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/8217949/do-pee-wee-players-need-killer-instinct I lived in Tulsa, OK for a few years and the football down there was insane. They televised 3rd grade football games, compete with color commentary ("what will he be like at 16?" and replays). One of the high schools avg 25 students per teacher but had four linebacker coaches.
  21. I really don't know why you think TR should go. You point out two org who had historically long number of losing seasons and relatively new front offices that have had the advantages of years worth of high draft picks and/or new stadiums. Ryan kept the Twins a playoff team while reconstructing the nucleus of his team. He's had the job for less than a year and made a number of solid moves in FA - Willingham, Burton, Walters, Doumit, Carroll - as well as drafting and spending a lot in the international market. Honestly, how would you feel if Ryan blew two drafts like Huntington did in Pitt? In 2009, he took Sanchez #4 on the promise to sign more guys later in the draft - none of which have made the majors or on the Pirates top 10 prospect list - and to sign Miguel Sano. He then took Appel this year and failed to sign him and his backup picks didn't sign either. His top prospects have struggled in the majors and a number of them are making their debuts at 25. His teams have faltered down the stretch (and will probably do so again this year). I actually do think NH is a good GM but I think if Ryan had made the same decisions he had, he'd be lampooned.
  22. Interesting secondary note. The qualifying offer is expected to be about a million more than originally expected - about 13.4 or so.
  23. Well, the optimist in me sees this as a final straw in Ryan's evaluation and will lead to changes.
  24. Wow. Way to keep it classy, DPJ.
  25. Of all the non-moves yesterday, I'm most disappointed that we didn't move Burton. Span has been pretty consistent when healthy and Willingham's contract is so good that it didn't make sense trading him unless someone overpaid. But Burton is a bit of journeyman having a career year and the Twins have a bunch of potential bullpen arms (heck, it might help Hendriks to pitch out of the pen for a month before starting again, ala Santana or Liriano). I know he's cheap but it would have been nice if he could have brought back something. Oh well, I expect Ryan will make some offseason moves.
