  1. Is this guy a real prospect? He's putting up good numbers but he's repeating A ball. He's 23. So that would seem to indicate he's not much of a prospect. But his OBP numbers have been great. I'd like to see what he could do against better competition.
  2. In that 11 'good' run, he had 3 clunkers. The apologizing for Liriano really has gotten out of hand. Over the years we've heard things like the Twins pushed him too hard coming back from injury, Gardy/Andy made him a bad pitcher, the defense let him down, he's unlucky, the Twins are playing with his mind. It's never his fault. He's 28. He's not a prospect anymore, he should be in his prime.
  3. So that'll make Thanksgiving dinner awkward ...
  4. I don't think a team would give up anything of value for Morny at this time. Wait til next years deadline.
  5. I have no idea why Seattle would think to trade for Willingham but if they'd give up a guy up the pitching, then sure.
  6. Interesting comparison, I think they are pretty similar type GMs, actually. IIRC, Huntington was mocked for a lot of his trades. He traded off Bay, Wilson, Snell, Nady etc and got a few complementary pieces back. Tony Sanchez and Mark Appeal fiascos. Twins outbid them on Sano. He hired an old school type manager. Pirate drafts have been interesting. On one hand, guys like Alvarez, Cole and Taillon were no-brainer picks but also made expensive gambles on guys like Allie and Bell. And his 08 draft hasn't really worked out yet - his first three picks are 25 now and yet to break out (Alvarez is having a nice season, I suppose, but a .297 OBP is scary), his 4th pick is back in the minors, I believe. Obviously no one from the 09-12 drafts have made it yet. Clearly, he's done some good things - but I wonder how you'd feel if Ryan punted the #4 pick for financial reasons or lost the #8 pick in a draft. If he had lost Sano to some other team, despite Sano wanting to come here. If his prize prospects were underwhelming at the ML level and not debuting before 25. I suspect your views would be much different based on you interpret the GMs rather than on what moves the GM actually made.
  7. Here's a pretty reliable payroll: https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tIn6UNnQQrmryUesyK0wSwg&output=html it's from Cots baseball contracts. The Twins will have a lot of leeway to make additions through FA, if they wanted to. I wonder if the Twins might consider moving Span in the offseason (if he's not moved at the deadline) and spending money on a RF, like Ross or Swisher, or a shortstop like Drew, over a big FA pitcher.
  8. Actually, Souhan suggested just that thing - trading Young and Liriano after the 2010 season. It went over like a lead balloon.
  9. That's the strawberry flavored type. The Gardy/Andy rants are Blueberry.
  10. Good work. I had hoped we'd get another teams failed starter and have our own reclamation project. So what should we get for Span?
  11. I think Morales might be a lost cause by this point. I'm sure they'll have him do something in Latin America this off season but he shouldn't be going to the AFL.
  12. I think the best pitcher the Twins could be interested in would be Dan Haren, who's sorta having a bad year. They've liked him in the past and he doesn't walk anyone, a major plus. He was hurt this year which should lower his price tag. I don't think the Twins will be on Grienke but the Twins were linked to rumors of Buehrle this offseason so I think they might be willing to spend a bit more than we pessimistically think.
  13. Unless you have to compare the Twins farmhands to every other teams, you won't know the answer but, to me, it seems normal. Esp for a small market team competing for titles (as the Twins were in that time period you're established). Part of the problem with looking at this is that, for the Twins, you're looking at prospects in all ranges. Mauer was the #1 prospect in baseball (04 and 05) while Baker was never a top 100 guy by BA.com. But we, as Twins fans, follow them. We don't follow those guys for other clubs so the only prospects that really sit with the us are the top guys in other systems who, like Mauer, are more likely to come up quick/stay up. We don't care that Jeff Niemann (#20 2005) didn't establish himself as a MLer until he was 26. Connor Jackson (#40) come in July for a bit back up in Aug at age 23. Chris Burke (#60) was sent up and down every year from 04-07 (starting at age 24) and then traded away. That Ezequiel Astacio (80) only got a cup of coffee at 25 and 26. Or that Greg Miller (100) never made it.
  14. So basically we have two camps. In camp one are people who think Liriano is a good pitcher, on par or better than guys like Sanchez (many of these guys probably though Slowey was a good pitcher, too). And in the other camp are the realists. I guess its probably part of the awesomeness of baseball that the first camp seems bigger.
  15. Well put. Too many of us are dreaming on what could be and not the reality of what is. Oriole fans had that problem with Daniel Cabrera for years.
  16. I agree with jorgen. I was hoping the Twins would get someone else's reclamation project but I think a lot of people need to realize how bad Liriano's been. Since 2008, he's had a 89 ERA+ and about 4 WAR, Blackburn has had a 87 ERA+ (in many more innings) and about 3.5 WAR. Liriano has had some nice moments but most pitchers do. He's had a ton of disaster starts and we weren't going to get much for a player like that.
  17. Technically, he had a stretch of 8 good games out of his last 11. His starts on June 10, July 1 and July 23 weren't good. (Although better than his normal stuff).
  18. In recent years, Morneau, Kubel, Santana, Garza, Baker, Slowey
  19. The problem is you're assuming another team would be dumb enough to offer Liriano a multi-year contract. There's no reason to think that happens. If he finishes the season pitching like he had been over the last month, then maybe someone takes that gamble. If he continues to struggle (a good bet with his track record) no one makes that offer.
  20. The Twins wouldn't give him a qualifying offer if he has a 5.00 era and 0 (or lower) WAR (both of which are better than his current numbers). And if they did, he'd take it so we'd be stuck with a 12.5m for a cruddy pitcher.
  21. It's also very likely that Liriano will continue to suck as a pitcher and we'd be left with nothing for him.
  22. Sickels on Hernandez: Hernandez has an 88-92 MPH fastball along with a good changeup and mediocre curve. There's nothing spectacular about him, but he throws strikes and could develop into a fifth starter or a relief option. I currently rate him as a Grade C prospect. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2011/12/31/2673194/prospects-in-the-carlos-quentin-trade-san-diego-padres-chicago-white-sox
  23. What did you think we'd get? Liriano is a bad pitcher and will make about 10 more starts this season. A Punto like UI and a 5th starter/bullpen arm is about right. We still have valuable trading chips in Span and Willingham.
  24. Escobar was ranked the Sox #8 prospect by fangraphs - strong glove, no bat - "CAREER OUTLOOK: There is no sign of an opportunity for Escobar to start at shortstop anytime soon in Chicago so he’ll either be trade bait or end up filling a utility role for the club. Either way he offers enough potential to put forth a respectable big league career." Frankly, this seems like what a Liriano haul should've looked like.
