  1. My guess is that they don't want him on the DL b/c they want to trade him in the offseason and want to say that he had a healthy year after getting dinged up in 2011. And frankly, it's not that uncommon for a team to keep let a banged up player sit for a week so they don't have to lose him for another week. Most teams do it.
  2. Hicks is continuing to hit well, improving a bit to .282/.380/.453. He has an OPS over .800 from both sides of the plate. TR apparently suggested that Hicks could be a September call up and, frankly he deserves it but I'm not sure where the at-bats would come from. They need to keep Span in CF to keep his trade value up during the offseason. Willingham isn't losing AB. If they did call up Arcia and Hicks (and Parmelee), they'd have to find some AB for them in RF with Revere. So, I guess we'll see. Anyhow, Hicks had a great season at AA and we should see him on top 100 lists again.
  3. Nah. Pavano had a terrific 2010 - 17-11, 221ip, 109 ERA+, 3.5 WAR. The Twins were a playoff team but pitching was considered a problem with Baker, Blackburn and Slowey all showing significant problems during the season. Most people thought Pavano would get a 3/30m type deal and the Twins would have to make do without him (lots of talk about Gibson at that point). The market never developed and the Nats offered him a 2yr deal. Pavano said he'd come back if Twins made a similar offer. He had a good season for us in 2011, actually threw more innings than in 2010. Nothing wrong with signing him.
  4. Considering how much and how well he's pitched for us the last few years, I don't think he's being lazy or not trying to come back. I think Thrylos is probably right, that there's a lot more wrong with his shoulder than indicated.
  5. Nats first rounder, and possibly the highest upside pitcher in the last draft, re injured his elbow. Good thing he took the 3m when he had the chance. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2012/8/20/3255880/washington-nationals-pitching-prospect-lucas-giolito-re-injures-elbow
  6. MVP: Trout Cy Young: Verlander Rookie of the Year: Trout Manager of the Year: Showalter Diamond could come in third in ROY voting and both Willingham and Mauer will get some down ballot MVP votes.
  7. Meh. Span and Willingham both have credible claims to being better this year.
  8. Well, I guess that's where this conversation is due to go - what is Mauer's line on 3-0 or 3-1 against lefty relievers with RISP vs. Willingham's numbers, etc. It could get sorta silly. I think Joe C and John both make good points (I just read the article) but I do think Joe should be looking to hit and his failure to do so leaves him open to legit criticism. I also think that Joe C's views are probably closer to Gardy's. It might also be time for Gardy to move Joe up in the batting order to #2.
  9. I think moving him to the pen and seeing if he can get anything done there. Probably not but it's worth giving him a shot for a month or so.
  10. Without reading the article or watching the game, I understand what Joe C is trying to get at - for 23m, you want a guy in the three hole who is looking to drive in runs when he has the opportunity, esp late in a game, instead of putting it on someone else. Joe's a great hitter but that'll always be the criticism of him. He's not perfect but he is what he is, at this point, and that's probably not going to change. I'd also bet that Mauer was facing a lefty and Seattle brought in a tough righty to get Willingham, which changes the math a bit.
  11. Thanks for posting. Its good to see that note on Berrios; in the Klaw chat yesterday he made a couple comments about Berrios not having a real high ceiling, and his stats so far this year being due to the fact that he's advanced for his age... but without the high ceiling. Berrios is physically pretty well developed, unlike a 6'4" 180 20 year old, Berrios isn't going to grow much more, so there isn't a lot of room for projection left. That doesn't (necessarily) mean he has a low ceiling. Most scouts think his ceiling would be a #3 - plus plus fastball to go with a (hopefully) plus slider and avg change up. Scouts liked his makeup and competitiveness. If he can't develop a third pitch, he goes to the pen. He should be a relatively fast riser through the system. I'm stupidly optimistic on the Twins teaching him to throw a change up. After that, it's just stay healthy.
  12. BA had him in today's prospect hotsheet: The Scoop: An elbow injury ruined Arcia's 2011 season, but that appears to only be a momentary setback in what's been an rapid rise through the minors. Arcia now carries career averages of .315/.371/.533. It's pretty impressive when you consider that he's never been old for a league he's played in. Josh Willingham has hit 30 home runs this year, but no one else in the Twins' outfield has more than three. Arcia could bring some much needed power to Minnesota in the not-to-distant future.
  13. Couldn't disagree more. The thing I hate most about football is how owners screw the players over their contracts. The players get hurt or has a down year, then the contract doesn't matter, the player is cut. But if they exceed the contract and want a raise, all of sudden owners act like the player is a greedy **** for wanting his value.
  14. Been to two games at Safeco. Sat in LF for one and RF for the other. Both had great views but in RF the sun was a real problem for a day game. Also, the Ichiroll isn't worth it.
  15. Well, Buxton has the highest ceiling and Benson's a bust at this point but Hicks and Arcia are so close to the majors right now, you'd have to go with them.
  16. My father in law lives just outside of Ft Myers so we've gone down there a few times for spring training and then a trip to Disney World. A different city in Fl, I don't recall, lost a spring training team (I think the Mets or Dodgers) and the city actually made more money. It was a bit of big story at the time. Most of the people that go to ST are locals, so they just end up spending their money elsewhere in town. The number of out of staters doesn't always cover the cities expenses in hosting a baseball team. And Florida towns all get tons of tourists - Ft Myers area has a lot of retirees so you get family members like my family coming down anyway. So I guess that's a long-winded way of me saying I wouldn't be surprised if Ft Myers was willing to let the Twins move out and survive on the Red Sox.
  17. I'm going to be really interested to see how BA, Klaw, Goldstein etc rank him in their top 100s next year. Seems like he should be a guy making some noise but you don't read much about him nationally.
  18. I wouldn't be surprised if Berrios passes Gibson and cracks at least some of the top 100 lists for next season. Unless Gibson has a stellar AFL performance, he is probably behind even Hendriks in some lists. I like Berrios a lot, too. But for him to crack the top 100 he'd have to have a real impressive month. 31st overall pick in a draft isn't going to get a ton of love, esp someone so young in rookie ball. I think he could very well be a fast riser - someone that, a year from now, a lot of prospect websites are talking about as the steal of last years draft, but I doubt anyone will have him on their top 100 and only a few would have him in the Twins top 6. (I'd have some combination of Sano, Buxton, Arcia, Rosario, Hicks, Gibson as the clear top 6 and round out the top 10ish with some order of Harrison, Michael, Kepler, Goodrum and Berrios. (I'm probably forgetting someone)
  19. I think we're probably in the 10-15 range, myself. I think Sano and Buxton will both be in the top 25ish. Rosario might be 40-60 range. Arcia and Hicks in the 80ish range, is my guess. That's not a bad top 5. Gibson is coming back from injury but he's a nice #6 but he won't be on anyone's top 100. After that though, it gets tough. Benson fell apart and the best guys after that are in rookie ball, hard to see that getting a ton of love. But the system is certainly moving in the right direction.
  20. We do have some solid OF prospects but none are really set to replace his power RH bat. I think the Twins would trade Willingham but only if they are over whelmed - ML ready starter and top prospects kind of deal. Otherwise, go into 2013 and you can trade him at the deadline. Even if he isn't putting up the same numbers next year, he's salary would keep him appealing to most teams. I still think Ryan will move Span this offseason and try to cobble together some starters and keep the middle of this lineup intact.
  21. I suspect by now (8/15) everyone of the 3 passed waivers and Morneau might have cleared. Not for salary relief but for someone like Kyle Crick or Heath Hembree; it would be a nice deal for the Twins, plus they have a ready replacement in Parmelee. The Giants are hurting right now and might be a great chance for the Twins to do something. As is right now they are tied with the Dodgers for the division and trailing the Pirates half a game for the second WC spot... I like the idea but not the players. I think Hembree's still out with an elbow injury. Crick is a decent A ball prospect but he's not enough for the Twins to give up Morneau. Dodgers were rumored to have given up two pitching prospects (Gould was one) for Carlos Lee but Lee vetoed the trade.
  22. Gardy seemed to be against it. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/166201756.html I'm honestly not sure why people are A) trying to think up some grand conspiracy by Gardy or 2) blaming the team for sending him down. Dozier is bad - 66 OPS+ and zero WAR, among lead leaders in errors. Let him go down and let the team give other people a chance.
  23. Now is NOT the time to trade away Parmelee. It's not like he is being blocked by a guy on a 10 year contract at first base, Morneau has a year left, there is a good chance he is traded sometime in 2013. Span has a decent shot to be traded as well, but if they head into 2013 with everyone still around, then leaving Parm in AAA for a few months until someone inevitably gets traded or injured isn't the worst thing in the world. This is the kind of logic that caused the Twins to trade away Wilson Ramos for Fatt Crapps, "oh hey we have a catcher already, no need to keep Ramos around!" Wasn't really thinking we should trade him b/c he's blocked. Rather, I was thinking his value might be pretty high right now and I'm still not sold on him as an everyday first baseman. And Parmelee certainly isn't untradeable. If the team gets a good offer for him, they should trade him, regardless of the situation is at first base.
  24. I think diehardtwinsfan is right. That said, I didn't listen to the podcast but (and this was brought up in another thread and I didn't really give it much thought), would a team like Baltimore gamble on Parmelee and give up a guy like Matusz, who has really struggled at the ML level? And if they would, would the Twins gamble on Matusz and give away a cheap bat like Parmelee?
  25. Yeah, this. The Twins will pinch pennies and save a million + with Escobar instead.
