  1. I suppose he'll get some down ballot votes. Is there a comeback POY award? He could get that.
  2. The AJ deal - all three guys were keys to the trade. Seattle had a good offer as well which required SF to kick in Liriano to outbid Seattle. If any of the three players were excluded, Ryan wouldn't have done the deal. Ryan dramatically improved the teams offense - we were nearly as bad in 2011 as the 2010 Mariners. As a team, our OPS+ went from 84 to about 100 in one offseason. Ryan also dramatically improved our bullpen to the point that we have a few tradeable assets there. The rotation fell apart but Ryan deserves a chance to fix that. And, by the way, suggesting that Baker is an answer for next year is ridiculous. He'll be coming off TJ surgery. He'll struggle a lot.
  3. Baltimore for one of their "failed" starters.
  4. I think it's still Gibson. We have a lot of intriguing young guys but Gibson was a top talent. Injuries are an obvious problem but he seems to be coming back, more or less, on schedule. (I guess technically Liam Hendriks is still a prospect until he gets over the 45 inning thing but he should do that this year but if you want to count him, I guess he'd be #6)
  5. Trade him if someone offers a good deal but they shouldn't trade him for 70 cents on the dollar. It seems that some teams think the Twins should trade him just b/c a prospect will help some future team.
  6. Yeah, it is. His defensive value/baserunning etc make him about twice as valuable as Stubbs. Plus, Stubbs is coming into his arbitration years where Span has the more team friendly contract.
  7. Well, so long as there's no pressure ....
  8. In fairness, I wonder why this hasn't happened more often. It was extremely close and he (correctly) got out of the box quickly so he didn't hear the home plate ump call it foul and it didn't seem like the other umps (or Phillies) told him as he rounded the bases.
  9. Yeah, Stubbs has been horrible and the Reds really need a quality leadoff hitter and another LH bat. Reds leadoff hitters have a .248 OBP! NL avg is .316.
  10. Arcia will probably sneak into some 'professional' prospect lists in the 50-80 range but that'll still leave him behind Sano, Buxton and probably Rosario. Hicks could jump him as well. But he's an intriguing prospect.
  11. http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=23328515&topic_id=9780550&c_id=mlb&tcid=vpp_copy_23328515&v=3
  12. Baseball America did a write up on Hicks today - http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/2012/07/aaron-hicks-showing-improvement-for-twins/ "Hicks, 22, is hitting .284/.379/.456 in 93 games for the Rock Cats, numbers that have been boosted by his .355/.459/.581 slash line in July and have brought his OPS up to eighth in the Eastern League. All of the tools and athleticism are still there for Hicks, it's just a matter of him showing he can string together at-bats like he has in July over the course of a full season. This past month has certainly been a positive sign"
  13. I think other teams opinion of Liriano is enough.
  14. And the 2010 Twins team was the best Twins team since 91. That said, there is some truth that the Twins will have to build a different type of team to play in Target Field than the one they created to play in the Dome. I think piranhas are going to be less useful since infield hits seem harder to come by. I don't think it's a coincidence that Hudson/Hardy were are main MI in 2010. And RH sluggers will be a better fit than LH ones.
  15. By most metrics, Span does play an elite CF. His OBP isn't as high as it was a few years ago but his value, if you trust WAR (either version), is higher. He also happens to fix a huge hole for the Reds. Cigrani is a nice prospect and all but he isn't a top 100 prospect, it isn't a certainty that he'll stay in the rotation and his upside is probably a #3 type pitcher. That's nice and all but isn't worth losing Span for.
  16. He's having a bit of a break out season. Sickels ranked him #94 (not counting recent draftees) in his midseason write-up. Although he had two other Red pitchers - Corcino (61) and Stephenson (63) higher. Honestly, for Span I'd want two of those pitchers in a package. If not, keep Span.
  17. I think they'd have to, at a minimum. It's not like the Twins should be trading for fungible parts. If they don't get a good deal that seriously upgrades their farm system, they keep Span. They can trade him next year or the year after if they want to. If they trade Span for Didi and some C prospects, I'd be pretty upset.
  18. Cool, he's a nice sleeper.
  19. That's not quite right. Boof and Nathan were the initial keys to the trade but SF had to kick in Liriano to outbid Seattle. And Boof was a fine prospect, at one time being ranked BA #29 prospect. If SF had declined to put in any of those three guys, Ryan wouldn't have made the trade.
  20. I think Span or Willingham is a better fit for the Dodgers. They could use both a good leadoff hitter and a power bat. Any trade with them would have to include Zach Lee.
  21. Not so sure on that. Turner is a decent prospect but Sanchez is really good pitcher. If he leaves after the year, fine. But if they sign him longterm, this could suck.
  22. Agreed. Although Xander Bogarts might be a bit of a reach ....
  23. It doesn't make sense for a 90+ loss team to trade a future piece for 2 years of Cliff Lee (Phillies would love that trade). Sano should be part of the rebuilding plan. You could consider trading him if you thought he could bring back the pieces that put you over the top (Twins apparently offered then #1 prospect Hicks and #3 Ramos for Lee a few years back).
  24. Kevin Goldstein wrote today that in his future shock column that: "When the Twins set a European bonus record by signing Kepler for $800,000 three years ago, it was a complete athlete bet. He's six-foot-four, graceful and strong, and few players at any level look better in a uniform, but it was going to take time for him to learn how to play the game. His middling numbers during his first few seasons were actually quite impressive considering where he came from, and while he's playing short-season ball for the third straight year, Kepler is still just 19 years old and making very real progress. With four more hits over the weekend, including his fourth home run of the year, Kepler is hitting .306/.440/.519 in 29 games and showing an outstanding approach with surprising contact abilities. His ceiling remains through the roof, and his chances of reaching it are rapidly improving." http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=17745
  25. Yeah, this.
