  1. Fun list. I like Berrios a lot and was hoping the Twins would take him in the supp draft before they did but #5 is a bit aggressive. Hicks would be above Arcia for me but again, that's why these things are fun. Kepler, Hicks, Arcia are all having pretty good years which really helps our farm system. I liked last years draft, even if Michael is struggling a bit, and it's good to see Harrison and Boyd doing well.
  2. Had themselves a heck of a trade deadline. They added HanRam and Victorino and didn't have to give up their top two pitching prospects (Lee or Webster). Kudos to them.
  3. But unlike last year, they only needed to move one guy (Liriano). It really bothered me that the FO didn't try and get something for Cuddy in a market that was screaming for him. Oh well. I expect the team will move Span in the offseason.
  4. Not really. He's on pace for about a 4.5-5.0 WAR season, coupled with a very team friendly contract. Gio/Latos were trades betting on future (one looks like it'll work out, the other maybe not) and Pence, like Span, was a bit more of a known quantity. Span is likely to be worth a ton over his remaining contract. You shouldn't trade him for a #3 starter and bullpen arm.
  5. Reds get Broxton. Relievers starting to go. Would like to see if Perkins or Burton bring us anything.
  6. Yeah, this. I really don't want to give up a guy like Span for a pu-pu platter. If we don't get a Gio/Latos/Pence like deal for him, don't trade him.
  7. Really liked this trade for Miami http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/07/cardinals-acquire-edward-mujica.html Cox was a real prospect not that long ago. Good buy low guy for them.
  8. Tough to guess. The Rangers have a pretty pitching rich system and Burton's been a pretty good reliever. Maybe they could get someone in the 10-15 B-/C+ range?
  9. Naturally, the Twins gossip starts when I have to go to a lunch meeting ...
  10. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/scott-miller/19695766/sources-reds-talking-denard-span-with-twins
  11. I suspect they don't want him to overthrow yet so they'll keep him playing against lesser competition for a bit. They don't want him to be tempted to put a little extra on something or try and spin a pitch with a little extra on it. They just want him to get back in the swing of things and he can wait a bit before worrying about the level of competition. They'll probably send him to AFL.
  12. Ah yes, the kool aid people. -sigh- You know, for the number of factual mistakes you post, you probably should take a break for a while. Sickels on the trade- "This may not seem like a great haul for Liriano, but given his very erratic track record, this package or something like it is probably the best the Twins could hope for." Baseball America: "A free agent after the season, Liriano's wildly-fluctuating results made it unlikely that the Twins would have made him the qualifying contract offer necessary to receive draft pick compensation. So while neither Hernandez nor Escobar project to be future impact players, each possesses at least one plus tool and can help the Twins in their organizational rebuild. That's certainly better than nothing." Liriano has the ability to rip off 7 good starts out of his next ten. It's a worth while gamble and a couple C prospects aren't that high of a price to make if you're wrong. That's why the trade is good from the White Sox side. If he implodes, they don't have any future obligation to him. I'm pretty sure that's Klaw's point. He isn't saying the Twins should've gotten more for Liriano, he's suggesting that it's a worthy gamble by Chicago.
  13. Yeah, I was wondering if the Reds recent hot streak (10 straight wins or so) would make them content. That could be a big problem for them b/c they aren't that good and do need to upgrade or they'll get bounced in the playoffs again. And Hamilton makes it hard for them to take on Span (I think). Not that they'd have to trade him but rather that if he doesn't stick at short, they'll have to move him to CF. So they'd rather rent than own a CFer.
  14. I remember how insulted Twins fans were about the Yankee offer.
  15. Yeah, I mostly feel like this too. I think we need more improvement from first base but I'm all right with giving Morneau the at bats to get back into shape. Obviously, the MI is still a problem but with good starting pitching, I think this team could compete for the central. But with Arcia/Hicks somewhat close, I really hope the Twins get a great deal for Span.
  16. I understand why the Twins didn't trade Young or Liriano after the 2010 season. They have sold high before - AJ, Knobby, Kielty, Aggie, Santana and even Garza (even if the returns weren't what you wanted, but that's a different thread) - so I think it has more to do with where the Twins are sitting than anything else. I agree that the Twins have a few sell high candidates - Span, Willingham, Perkins - that could be moved today or before next April. I'm not sure Joe C's criticism of Hardy is well founded (oh, he sucks again, by the way). The Twins didn't have the money to keep Hardy, Pavano and Thome and chose to move Hardy and spend 15m on a Japanese all star. Oops.
  17. Agreed. It's part of the cycle if your not the Yankees. Phillies have a lot of money so they'll have some room to regroup. I'm glad their ownership went all in.
  18. sigh. You can rebuild without trading Span. Moves like Bullock for Diamond are also effective. Obviously, if Ryan gets a great offer he should take it but there's no reason for him to make a move - today - unless he likes it. If the 2013 Twins have this same rotation then there's something wrong but the FO has plenty of time before next April to make changes. And your last sentence is just stupid.
  19. Yep, I was thinking of Lind. Snider is probably worth a look. I would've been ok with moving a reliever for him but you'd first run it by your scouting guys and check if they think they can fix his on-base issues. It would have been a risky trade but I wouldn't have faulted the team if they did it.
  20. Isn't Snider owed a lot of money? Not a good fit here.
  21. They needed to trade Liriano since he won't be part of next years team. They can move Span or anyone else in the offseason if they wanted to. If they aren't blown away for Span or Willingham, I don't expect them to make a trade. They still might make a small waiver trade involving Pavano or Capps in August. I would like them to look at moving Perkins though. LH relievers might be over valued by some.
  22. Yeah, it'll either be that a no-hitter. Nothing in between.
  23. I think it depends on which guys were drafted and when. Sale, for instance, was considered one of the quickest to the majors guy in his draft. The White Sox also traditionally drafted higher than the Twins - both Beckham and Sale were top 13 picks. It's also a bit much to suggest the Twins haven't had young pitchers on the ML level. And the Twins have fast tracked a number of players - Baker, Garza and Gibson all moved three levels in one year.
  24. This is just more excuse making. He's not fragile, he's not a high-upside pitcher. He's 28. He's a bad pitcher. Since 2008, Blackburn and Liriano have been extremely similar pitchers in results, whatever stat you want to use - QS (52 v 51%), WPA (-2.4 v -4.4), WAR (4.1 v 3.1), whip (1.415 v 1.463), ERA+ (89 v 87). Blackburn can be outstanding for stretches and brutal for others. All pitchers can. Maybe Liriano has a nice run in him for Chicago. I doubt it, but it could happen. Talented pitchers have multiple plus pitches to go with command and control. Liriano doesn't have that. Baseball people knew that which is why, despite many teams desperate for pitching help, no one was willing to give up anything other than a couple C prospects. It would be nice if some of the blame on Liriano's crappy career was actually placed on Liriano. And, as said by many, if Lirano melts down against Cleveland, his value decreases and he loses a start for the trading team. The Twins could be stuck with him and get nothing in return at all.
