  1. I think the ACLU certainly walks a fine line. They do a great job fighting for rights even when they are unpopular, but I think it's hard not to argue that many members of the ACLU slant towards the left. They also have become a bit more active in rights than defensive of those that exist. At least it seems that way to me. A lot of ACLU staff slant libertarian too.
  2. C Mauer 1B Morneau 2B Carroll 3B Plouffe SS Didi Gregorius LF Willingham CF Revere RF Parmelee DH Doumit
  3. I wouldn't exactly call the ACLU a special interest group unless defending people's Constitutional rights and freedoms is a special interest. Agreed. The ACLU of MN (http://www.aclu-mn.org/get-involved/) has had some pretty interesting work over the last year.
  4. I don't think he'll ever master the strike zone enough to be anything other than a fringe MLer. Hope I'm wrong but he'll be 25 next year and still only has about 50 games above AA (at AAA and ML) and really struggled in those games.
  5. I like Cingrani but there is still question of whether he sticks as a starter. He stats were solid, obviously, but scouts still question whether he has enough stuff to be a starter and most agree that his ceiling is a #3. The Twins might actually prefer Corcino (another Reds prospect). I think, for Span, you'd want to get more than that. But, fortunately, there should be some demand for Span, who is a legitimate leadoff hitter.
  6. Love the idea of Sanchez but you're right, no way Lohse, who is also a Boras client, comes to MN.
  7. Twins have had a decent run of sucess with 2nd round picks, believe it or not. From 01-09 Baker, Benson, Crain, Slowey and Swarzak all made at least an appearance in the majors, the Twins traded 3 other 2nd rounders (Bullock, Tyler and Landergraf) for Mlers Diamond, Cabrera and Casilla. Looking at the list of QO that Seth posted, I don't think we'll lose a 2nd rounder. Obviously, I'd get rid of one for Hamilton but the Twins aren't signing him.
  8. Romney could win but it's pretty unlikely. I think Obama wins the EV 303-235 and ges a 1-2% national vote victory. I'm really watching both MN amendments (vote no on both!). I think four other states have a gay marriage ban of some sort but I don't remember which four.
  9. I like the idea of the team grabbing guys like Johnson, Marcum or even Villaneavua (another Blue Jays pitcher). Someone is going to be really lucky with Haren this offseason, hope it's us but I'd bet on him staying in CA, either with SD or OAK. Drew has Boras as an agent. He won't come here. I think Span to the Reds makes too much sense although I think Span gets Cingrani and Didi (Newman at fangraphs thought that was a fair trade in a chat a few weeks ago). Either way, I think Span gets moved.
  10. Seems like a good move to me, nothing to get upset about anyway. Roencike managed to put up a 2 WAR season in Col. There was enough gnashing of teeth last year over the Burton and Fien signings that I'm not going to complain about an early November move. The team still has plenty of options with both players and plenty of space on the 40 man roster, if that comes into play.
  11. Pavano had an excellent season in 2010 and it didn't make sense to let the teams second best pitcher leave, esp after it turned out we could get for half of what most people thought he'd get (3/30). He had another solid season in 2011 (over 220 ip again and another 3WAR year) and, according to fangraphs, was worth 16.2m over those two years. I have no idea how you can think he wasn't a very good pitcher in 2010 or 2011. I suspect he signs somewhere for few million + incentives. Maybe with us but probably with an NL team (maybe Pitt). If he's healthy, he'll make someone look smart.
  12. Keep in mind everyone of these pitchers is older than Santana was when we got rid of him and he broke down in his second year in NY. I don't think Ryan wants to risk so much money on a long term pitching deal. If Sanchez would sign a 3 year deal, I think we'd be on him. So it looks like he'll try and fix the rotation by just getting more innings eaters (which will be a significant improvement over last year) and probably still trade Span for a pitcher.
  13. Seth, the wife and I enjoy "Go On" and "Haven." We're also watching a lot of the new Dr. Who on dvd. Nerdy but a lot of fun. Amy Pond is wonderful. :-)
  14. Only 6,000 more pages to go! I loved those books but beware of *******s that ruin things, like telling you what the red wedding is.
  15. Bit of an overstatement. We got rid of one year of Hardy, it's not remotely the worst trade ever. And, frankly, it was a very defensible trade at the time. Hardy missed a lot of games in 2010, leaving Gardy with a 24 man bench. His play had declined two years in a row and he was due a large raise in his arbitration year. The Twins decided that money would be better spent on Thome and Pavano.
  16. Yeah, MI is a bit of blackhole for us but we do have a handful of legit prospects in the pipeline - Rosario, Micheal, Polanco, Santana. I suspect next year we'll have Carroll (who isn't that bad) and a pu-pu platter again. I wonder if Span gets traded for a MI and a pitcher.
  17. Not sure I can agree with this, "The bad news is that the Twins are going to be hedging their bets this offseason." It seems pretty smart for the Twins to not assume the 27 year old Plouffe will suddenly become a solid MLer. He has some pop but his defense was horrible.
  18. I think the Twins will let Parmelee try RF first and, if/when he fails, call up one of Arcia/Hicks but it won't be until late May, at the earliest.
  19. Fun read. I think his 1-9 is right although he's higher on Arcia than I thought he'd be. The Twins have some nice depth of fast to the majors bullpen arms, too. They won't all make it but enough will. I liked his Polanco write up, Twins 09 international signings were pretty solid with 3 in the top 12. His others to consider included Felix Jorge who I think will be a top 10 prospect at this time next year. Hudson Boyd has been disappointing. Anyone know if he's going to be a bullpen guy or do the Twins still like him as a starter?
  20. Span will probably be moved, opening up RF for either Parmelee or eventually Arcia. Which ever one sticks should provide solid RF pop.
  21. I love Buerhle although I'm worried about him declining and he is owed a lot of money. It would be pretty risky. He could turn into a pumpkin overnight. I'm ok with it so long as we don't have to give up a top 6 prospect.
  22. A 3 year deal for a pitcher coming off TJ surgery? I dunno, sounds made up.
  23. ok just some perspective here. in 2012 Justin Morneau hit: .267/.333/.440, 19 HR, 77 RBI for the Twins making $14MM and Delmon Young hit: .267/.296/.411, 18 HR, 74 RBI for the Tigers not that much different. (speaking of selling low...) Only if you're looking in a vacuum. Let's see what happens if we look at ballpark adjustments and WAR. One was 113 OPS+ and .9 WAR and the other was 87 OPS+ and -1.2 WAR. One has a history of being a good player, one doesn't. One seems to be coming back from injury to become a good player again. The other is a bad player.
  24. I think there are a lot of reasons a Morneau trade won't happen. 1) He's insanely popular with the fan base, the Twins can't just dump his salary. They'd need to get a great package in return and I'm not sure that's out there. 2) Parmelee might not be a legit MLer. He might be but if he puts up a 80 OPS+ next year, trading Morneau was a horrible move. 3) Mauer, Willingham, Morneau is a legit 3-4-5 right now. My guess is the FO would rather build around that by moving other parts (Span) and making a few FA additions. 4) Touched on it in #1 but Morneau's return probably isn't going to be worth it. We won't get an absolute stud back. We might get a solid AA prospect or a current ML back of the rotation pitcher. If we hang onto Morneau and the team flops again, he would very likely have more value at the trade deadline than right now. My guess is that is what the FO does.
  25. Depending on cost, I'd be ok with bringing him back.
