  1. IIRC, the Twins weren't linked much to Bennintendi. The knock on him was he was short (5'10") and probably couldn't stick in center and there were questions about whether his bat would play in a corner. Some scouts labeled him a "tweener." Turns out he's been a pretty good pick but it's worth noting that Fenway (and most AL East ballparks) cover his limitations nicely. The name the Twins were linked to were mostly pitchers, including Jay, Fullmer, Allard and Buehler but all had flaws (height came up a lot). The bats that came up the most was Tyler Stephenson and Daz Cameron, at least as I remember it.
  2. Thanks for sharing. He does look good and gangly.
  3. "It's the economy, stupid" was messaging. "Read my lips, no new taxes," messaging. "1000 points of light." "Contract with America." "Yes, we can." Yeah, messaging is important.
  4. The discussion of African Americans in the game was great. I'm glad he wrote about it.
  5. https://www.mlb.com/news/2018-mlb-futures-game-impressions-on-scouts/c-286112690 Some scouts talked about the players including this about Kiriloff - Alex Kirilloff and Taylor Trammell stood out to me the most on the U.S. team. Kirilloff has such a good load and the barrel stays in zone a long time. I think he understands what he wants to do at the plate. Trammell keeps getting better and stronger. He has always had feel for the barrel but now the ball is carrying to big parts of the field. Both have good zone feel for young hitters. I know there's a lot of pressure on both profiles because they both likely end up on corners but they can hit.
  6. Nice write up. Graterol is a top 100 guy now. Lewis and Kiriloff are both up (gives Kiriloff a B+ grade). Romero graduated off list but also gave him a B+. I like that he mentions Balazovic at the end there. He's a good sleeper guy and has looked good in Cedar Rapids, where he's almost 3 years younger than the league average.
  7. I think Davis was basically a toolsy lottery ticket that might pan out. Some of them do.
  8. Futures game thread at minor league ball has a few comments about Kiriloff. All positive. https://www.minorleagueball.com/2018/7/15/17574118/mlb-futures-game-discussion-thread
  9. We've been hearing the "GOP is doomed due to demographics" for a decade plus now. There's no reason to expect that. Frankly, the Dems are closer to becoming a regional party right now. The GOP controls everything.
  10. He's a fourth OFer but a decent one.
  11. I think it's fairly close, isn't it? Sure, Kelly's no sure thing but he has a lot of control left and is a former top prospect. He hasn't played well in the majors but he's hitting well in AAA. Of course, it's in the PCL so ... And Gibson is 30 and replaceable ... I guess this would depend on how the team's scouts view Kelly.
  12. This is probably more an "eye of the beholder" type thing but looking at the elite systems over the last few years, this current group isn't there. Twins, Cubs, Astros, Braves etc all had a bunch of truly elite guys. A little harder to go through the lists now that BA is behind pay walls but prospect guys were gushing over those systems as containing not just future starters but future all-star/mvp/cy young types. The 2015 BA top 100 was insane. I'm not sure the minors is as stocked right now as it was a few years ago. Those teams had (and have) loaded systems. Right now, maybe Lewis would have fit into the Buxton/Sano tier? Graterol might get there. Kiriloff will have to hit like crazy to get to that level and he's not there yet.
  13. Nice write up. Graterol is really intriguing and I hope the Twins push him a bit. It will be interesting to see how the national publications rate him in the coming months. Lewis has high upside but this review has certainly shown that, at least for now, the Twins have depth but they don't have a ton of true elite guys in the system. Lewis, Graterol and Kiriloff might be and a few other guys could get there but it's mostly a deep system as opposed to high end. IMHO.
  14. Molly using him every other day probably didn't help.
  15. Scene: Possibly a basement or maybe even an evil villain's lair. (Gunnarthor thinks about sharing private details about himself on-line). Gunnarthor: Nah.
  16. Machado is a pipe dream but it's a good pipe dream. Amazing how much better he makes our lineup. My guess is the FO isn't going to make these sort of longterm plans until they see more of what they have in Sano and Buxton. If they can come back after the all-star break and put up a decent August/Sept run and give the FO reason to think they can be counted on for a full season, I think they might make those sort of aggressive moves. But I think it's unlikely that they would do so and we're more likely to see payroll drop to the bottom 7 or 8 team range.
  17. People on this site have pushed those opinions for years. It's not exactly a secret.
  18. As simple as black and white.
  19. Kavanaugh might be the Dems best chance to stall his nomination. The Post reported that he has literally "millions" of pages of paper he's compiled over the last 12 years on the DC Circuit. It takes a lot of time to get all that together and the Dems can try to slow things. Not sure if they can slow this for four months but I'm sure they'll try. It also turns out that Rand Paul might have some issues with Kavanaugh, going back to the Bush administration. I doubt Paul has the balls to actually vote against him but he could support stalling measures. (All that said, I expect Kavanaugh will be confirmed before November).
  20. I sorta agree but hitting breaking balls is basically why minor leaguers don't become major leaguers so his struggling isn't that worrying. But whether he can adapt/adjust with this coaching staff I guess can be a question. With Buxton and Sano's struggles, Kepler's plateauing and general offensive malaise, our development people might be losing some of the benefit of the doubt.
  21. A lot of voters in MN, WI, MI, PA etc supported Sanders over Clinton, IIRC. Ignoring Russia interference and racism and other things, in 2016 the Dems were seen heavily as the party that supported big businesses and big banks over the little people. The DFL in MN ignored serious economic harm in rural areas of our state and I suspect they ignored those issues in other states as well. For all the warts guys like Sanders and Trump had, they at least spoke about it. Clinton didn't. I think progressive economic ideas could easily work in GOP leaning parts of MN. The GOP tax bill isn't looked on too well by most people, even republicans. Part of the Dems plan to be competitive in these areas should certainly go back to Bill Clinton's "It's the economy, stupid" plan. Economic gains for rural Minnesotans have continued to tank and China's tariffs on Soy are going to kill some farms in this state. The DFL has some openings if they'll try and take them.
  22. Not sure about IFA but I would doubt that the Pohlads would ever spend more than their pool. I'm a bit surprised they didn't spend all of it but ... Pohlads be Pohlads.
