    I think this is pretty spot on. I do think that IF Hicks could get it all figured out, his tools would make him a better player but I think that's very unlikely. And I do think Hicks is the more likely of the two to fall apart as well. So it seems like a smart trade.

    Doesn't seem to be that bad - he thinks Hicks may profile as a league average hitter going forward, not a superstar. That seems about right. He's less confident about Murphy's bat but still thinks he has enough skills to be a solid platoon, if nothing else. That seems like a decent enough best case/worst case scenario.

    I liked HIcks but I think people are going a bit overboard here. Defensive stats thought he was about average, although I think he looked better under the eye test. He had a monster July last year but didn't hit much after that (OPS for Aug and Sep were .597 and .701). It's doubtful that bat plays in a corner and the Twins have the best CF prospect in baseball ready to step in this season. Murphy isn't sexy but he's a solid enough catcher with more years of team control. And it's probable that the Twins scouted him a bit in the EL and IL so have several years of reports on him. Sure don't think the comparisons to Herrmann are fair.

    Seems about fair. I like Hicks but I'm not sure he has enough bat to play a corner and CF is obviously Buxton's for the long term. And, even with his break out last year, his bat hasn't been ideal. Hicks did, esp in the second half, show an ability to get on base which the team generally lacks and in the short term, that might hurt. I never looked at Murphy from the Yanks, always thought they'd try and target Sanchez instead.

    I don't think he (Ward) would be enough. He was taken in the first round but signed at a discount. He came up a few times as a possible pick for us at 73. MLBpipeline ranked him #99 in their top 200 for the draft. He's seen as a defense first catcher with a limited bat. Most likely a backup. Here's the pipeline write up on him - "Ward, who served as a backup on USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team over the summer, is primarily a catch-and-throw guy. He has tremendous arm strength and has worked to improve his release time to get the ball down to second even faster. His other defensive skills aren't as advanced as his arm, but he has the tools to be a quality all-around receiver. While he's hit some in college, his offensive game does lag behind his defense at this point, though he'll flash glimpses of some pull power. He is athletic and runs well for a catcher. Ward has the behind-the-plate skills to at least be a strong Major League backup. The team that takes him early will be the one that thinks he'll hit enough to be a regular backstop at the highest level."

    Would we take Bedrosian and Hector Santiago for Plouffe? I've seen that on a few Angel blogs. Santiago seems like a Milone-like lefty. I think that's probably a bit light.

    Didn't Souhan suggest something like this a few weeks ago? In any event, I think something will have to change unless Mauer starts hitting. The Twins can't keep putting him in the lineup if he's a .265/.330/.390 guy anymore.

    Yeah, they'd need to add to that but Bedrosian could be a real piece - maybe him and a good SP prospect? Not really sure what the Angels have.

    A .380 OBP would be third in the AL last year and that would be the most important part. Sure, the 110 .iso is low but that could be forgiven (and, in fairness, Mauer had a better .iso last year). That stat line would have been pretty good, frankly. It wouldn't have been an all-star but it would probably been about 3-4 WAR.

    Mauer isn't going anywhere, he has a full no-trade clause, he can't go back to catcher. Here's what might happen. The team starts the year with Sano in RF, Plouffe at 3b, Park at DH and Mauer at first. Buxton and Kepler are at AAA. After six weeks, Sano and Park are just what we've been dreaming about - taking walks, hitting HRs, major offensive bats. Plouffe is putting up his standard .250/.315/.430 line. But Mauer is struggling - .265/.325/.330 while Buxton is hitting .400 in Rochester. At that point, the Twins might start to think about moving Mauer to a part time bench spot. Of course, we can also dream and hope that instead of a .265/.325/.330 line Mauer is putting up a .300/.380/.410 line instead.

    I guess I'm not too worried about him playing RF after watching Torii, Hammer and Arcia in the OF the last few years. I think he'll be ok. He's faster than he looks and his arm will play there. I'm not sure he'll have the instincts to make a good read but I also don't know that he won't. The only concern I have is if he gets hurt but that's probably me being overly concerned. He's a big dude but that doesn't mean he's not in shape.

    I'm also not syaing that there's any real interest in Plouffe from the Astros (or even if there's real interest in trading him from MN). But it's something I saw from an Astros team themed website. Would a trade make sense? I have no idea. But it's out there and not created by Twins-fans so I thought I'd throw it out there. I'm sure the other place I saw it was a different Astros blog, not their SBNation site (although it came up there a couple times, as well).

    I saw it on at least one other Astros blog but I have no idea which one, sorry. I do think Plouffe is an upgrade for them (over the last two years, Plouffe has amassed more WAR than Lowrie and Valbuena combined) and they also have a problem at first base although they should probably give Singleton another shot.

    The Twins could certainly start the season with a lineup that looks something like this - CF Hicks 2B Dozier 1B Mauer RF Sano DH Park 3B Plouffe LF Rosario C Suzuki SS Escobar And make moves in season just as well.

    OK, so I now think Plouffe gets moved. Going by team fWAR for third base (not a great stat), the teams below us at 3B last year that might be considered contenders (ie guys who might want Plouffe for two years) are: Red Sox -2.5 WAR DBacks 0.5 WAR Yankees, Padres, Cleveland at 1.2 WAR Angels 1.8 WAR Astros 2.5 WAR Nationals 3.0 WAR Twins were listed at 3.6.

    He's a pretty consistent guy - you're going to get a .250/.315/.430 102 OPS+, 3 WAR guy who's under team control for two years and plays solid defense. That's a good thing. On an Astros blog they were talking about a deal for him that would be centered around Micheal Feliz, a hard throwing 23-year old pitching prospect and some throw-ins. I'm not sure we're at a place where we can just assume we can replace Plouffe's production (offensively or defensively) so I don't think we'll trade him.

    This will probably become a flame thread but I hope not. I would hire Gardy, I think he does a lot of stuff well and the stuff that annoyed people was blown out of proportion. I think hiring him as a bench coach would be a pretty good idea for SD. Torre used to surround himself with former managers on his staffs and an experienced coach might make it easier for the new manager who has a lot to learn.
