  1. Jen Rubin is a conservative columnist at the Post. I think this article today was pretty good. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/opinions/wp/2018/10/29/enough-platitudes-lets-name-names/?utm_term=.281228470888 "In sum, we all have a tendency is to talk about “hate” or “bigotry” as if such sentiments were inanimate objects. We have to root it out. We have to combat it. But there is no “it” — there are people who say, write and do hateful things. And they should be held accountable. Let’s end the lazy thinking and the moral denseness. Lots of people have behaved in ways that degrade our culture and give oxygen and inspiration to dangerous people. We should call them out — by name — and implore them to do better."
  2. I'm not recommending anything but here's an article about some nice dividend stocks to own. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/9-best-dividend-stocks-buy-202745921.html A few of them I do own and a few others are obvious "safe" stocks. Some are a bit riskier.
  3. Wouldn't the new manager want a little time to speak with the coaches before he makes his decision? I'd assume it would be his decision.
  4. Yep. All his politics aside, Donald Trump is also just a bad human being.
  5. I could have posted the studies themselves but they were linked in the article. When I was growing up, the republicans were the "grown ups" who fixed the problems that the Democrats pointed out but couldn't figure out how to solve. We had republican leaders push through environmental laws, for crying out loud. Now the right is so sensitive they can't even bother to understand why things happen. They've become a loose collection of "victims" who can't learn about anything - they actively encourage ignorance - and yet are "experts" on everything. And this victimization fantasy leads to violent acts that we see constantly from the right and not the left.
  6. The 'whataboutism' with conservative America is a truly dangerous matter. I'm glad you agree that Trump is bad. That said, I certainly haven't read every page in this thread but just looking over the last ten pages and no one but you has used "Nazi" so I'm not sure people are doing what you allege. And what you allege if frankly a non-issue. There is absolutely no comparison about violent extremism in America. The rightwing is far more violent and has committed far more acts of terror in America. It's not even close. https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2018/09/28/right-wing-warnings-pose-far-more-danger-america-than-left-wing-violence/?utm_term=.e0b225e12462 https://www.thenation.com/article/why-does-the-far-right-hold-a-near-monopoly-on-political-violence/
  7. The sign stealing paranoia when there aren't runners on base is probably a strong indicator that a lot of teams are now stealing signs through other means.
  8. If they did discriminate against him, I hope he gets a big settlement.
  9. I think he's better than that but for now he's keeping defenses honest. That's all we need.
  10. You know, every week that Bills game seems even more bizarre.
  11. I do like the general depth of the system but I do think it lacks big upside. Guys like De Jong, Littel, Stewart, Thorpe and Gonsalves all profile as backend type starters. That's not a bad thing - it's hard to find #3 or better types - but I do wish we had a bit more pitching upside although Romero (graduated off the list) and Graterol have some. I'm not thrilled with the pen arms and UI types at all.
  12. Yeah, the fangraphs guys were high on him but I thought they were the outlier. It's nice to see others high on him.
  13. Top three aren't a surprise but #4 was. https://www.minorleagueball.com/2018/10/23/18002156/minnesota-twins-top-20-prospects-for-2019 Sickels like the depth of the team a lot.
  14. I think the manager has to be able to relate to the players and that probably requires him to understand their backgrounds. Molly was baseball smart and he managed every game as a must win, blowing out his pen in the process and not given enough rope to the young guys.
  15. I generally have faith in people to do good and try and help each other. FEMA on the other hand ... In all seriousness, the area I live in will deal with the occasional tornado and lots of blizzards and I think we'll be ok. The city has a pretty good response to those emergencies.
  16. 7m/year? That's a really nice deal for Arizona. Escobar's been a roughly on pace to be a 2 WAR player 3 out of the last 4 years and is only 30. I thought he'd get 9-10m/year from somewhere. I suspect we will hear more stories about front offices colluding again this year. It'll be interesting to see what Harper and Machado pull in.
  17. I usually hate Boston but I have to admit, this is a fun team to watch.
  18. He's a cog, not a difference maker. Solid player but expendable, especially with Kiriloff coming up. I'd consider trading him and let Cave/Wade hold the corner down until Kiriloff but if they don't get a great offer, we could do worse than letting him play for us.
  19. Fangraphs agrees with me! https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-fan-interference-call-was-probably-good/
  20. I thought West made the right call and I really don't like Boston.
  21. I imagine the test would probably include personality traits that they are going to run through something. IIRC, football players take some pretty stupid "tests" where they get asked questions like "Is it better to win a game or hang out with your friends." Or such nonsense.
  22. ROKU is taking a hit, down into the 50s. Anyone have any insight on it? We kicked the tires on it a few months ago but passed and saw it jump. Might jump in now.
  23. From mlbtrade rumors, They project the Twins to spend 38.3m on arb for 10 players. It that is accurate, that would put the teams total payroll at just shy of 70m.* Assuming ownership keeps payroll roughly even, they'd have about 55-60m to spend in FA this offseason. Jake Odorizzi – $9.4MM Kyle Gibson – $7.9MM Eddie Rosario – $5.0MM Robbie Grossman – $4.0MM Max Kepler – $3.2MM Miguel Sano – $3.1MM Ehire Adrianza – $1.8MM Taylor Rogers – $1.6MM Byron Buxton – $1.2MM Trevor May – $1.1MM Grossman (4m) and Adrianaza (1.8m) seem the most likely to be released out of the list although Odorizzi is making a lot of money, too. * Assuming Morrison's contract is not picked up and counting the 5m+ for Hughes.
  24. Yep. I thought things would be bad but you were right. They are so much worse than I thought they'd be.
