Twins 4, Rangers 1: The Piranhas Strike Again
terrydactyls replied to Eric Blonigen's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Overall baserunning value? Are you kidding me? Another of the myriad of nonsensical metrics. Don't you think that having to field an AAA team after the deadline might have more to do with their record than the base stealing? -

Chicago has wrapped up the pre-lottery first pick and several can no longer catch the Twins or Pirates. So my list has gotten much shorter. P Team W L PCT GB 2 Minnesota Twins 68 89 0.433 0.0 1 Pittsburgh Pirates 68 89 0.433 0.0 3 Los Angeles Angels 70 87 0.446 2.0 . -

Chicago has sewn up first place in the race to the bottom. The sweep of the doubleheader coupled with a Pittsburgh win has the Twins and Pirates tied with 7 games to go. What an exciting season!!! In the top of the third, I was impressed that Will (Call Him Up!) Holland was able to "sign" Cardenas to second. Do the Twins teach ASL in the minors?

Right on. As long as the Twins continue to play shoddy defense and have no idea of fundamental baseball, no manager will stack up against Kelly.

No game today so I'm putting this in the minor league report. Besides, more of you may read the minor league recap than read the Twins' game review. And with ten or fewer games remaining, I'm dropping teams that cannot catch the Twins. P Team W L PCT GB 1 Chicago White Sox 57 96 0.373 - 2 Pittsburgh Pirates 65 88 0.425 8.0 3 Minnesota Twins 66 86 0.434 9.5 4 Los Angeles Angels 69 84 0.451 12.0 5 Atlanta Braves 70 83 0.458 13.0 6 Whatever Athletics 72 81 0.471 15.0 7 Baltimore Orioles 72 81 0.471 15.0 8 Miami Marlins 73 80 0.477 16.0 9 St. Louis Cardinals 74 79 0.484 17.0 10 Tampa Bay Rays 75 78 0.490 18.0 11 San Francisco Giants 76 77 0.497 19.0

Since you asked if the Twins "could" spend $30M, the answer is ‐ yes they could. But the real question is - will they?

And Dictionary.com states that a similar word to "command" is "control". So baseball uses two words to say something when only one is needed. There's an old tale I was told when I was a young kid about Lefty Grove telling a group of young players about the importance of "Control". To demonstrate, he had a catcher crouch behind the plate, put his catching hand on his thigh, and hold up his glove on his knee. He then told him to relax, close his eyes, and don't move. Lefty went out to the mound and proceeded to throw 20 straight pitches in the pocket of the catcher's mitt. And he called that having great control of his pitches. So for this old fart, the word "command" will be disregarded. P.S. I have no proof that this occurred but I did hear it from several people - one of whom was my father who had the opportunity to pitch against him when an MLB barnstorming team came to his hometown.

"Zebby Matthews entered the game, continuing his extended audition for the 2026 rotation. Sporting excellent control, his command is still a work in progress." I've sked this numerous times and never receive an answer. So here I go again. what is the difference between "command" and "control"? To my ancient mind, if a pitcher has "excellent" control (as in the sentence above), he should beable to put away batters. Where does this command thing come in?

Here is a quick sketch of a thought I just had and please feel free to crap all over it. All of this consternation over bringing up a player because he would have to be added to the 40-man roster is denying a lot of players valuable experience. I am proposing to revamp the entire process (and greatly simplify it). Here are my new rules. 1. For any international draft signings: the team retains player control for eight years. 2. For anyone drafted who has just finished high school: the team retains control for seven years. 3. For anyone drafted while in college or a recent graduate: the team retains control for five years. 4. For unrestricted free agents: the team would be assigned control based on their age that is similar to drafted players. This gives all players an opportunity to be a free agent in their mid to late 20's. No more Pre-Arbitration, Arbitration, or Service Time. Teams have between five and eight years to either sign them longterm, put them on the major league roster (with no options), or lose them to free agency. Thank you for reading and let the crapping begin.
