  1. Whelp. It was fun while it lasted. 2nd injury stint for Buxton coming already.
  2. It is. I'm just saying the elevated walk rate isn't coming for free. Sano has always had a pretty good eye, but he still struggles with recognizing or making contact on pitches down in the zone or below the zone and that's where pitchers are focusing. It leads to a lot of swings and misses but also a lot of walks if he can lay off. Until he is able to punish those pitches there won't be many balls in play and Sano's value will be severely capped.
  3. I suspect the walk rate has more to do with pitchers throwing him junk and borderline pitches until he either strikes out or walks, both of which are preferable to putting the ball in play. Trading hits for walks isn't very valuable for a 290 lb power hitter.
  4. Buxton has never proven himself over anything close to a full season and we're talking about contract comparables for guys who demonstrated multiple years of greatness before getting paid. He has 6 years of poor AVG/OBP to offset. The only way Buxton gets paid like that is if he plays out of his mind and stays healthy through this year and next, at which point he's a FA and we'd get outbid anyways. It's kind of a crummy lose-lose proposition for the Twins.
  5. The coincidence is that those guys were all signed early to team-friendly deals before they fully proved themselves, thus discounting for the risk that they weren't going to blossom into above average players. They all understood that they were better off grabbing the bag now while there was still the 'potential' label on them. Turns out that flawed players in their mid-20s often remain flawed into their late 20's and beyond.
  6. Looking forward to it. Especially if it reduces the ridiculous pop-ups on mobile...
  7. I second the other responses you've received. But I'd also add that Mauer was partly paid for delivering many prior years of elite performance as well as being the face of the Twins, which pays back in merchandise and ticket sales. Buxton is only now starting to show elite performance and will almost certainly fall back from Trout-level numbers to something more reasonable, and then he still has to keep it up for a full season to establish his value even at that level. It's so risky to offer an 8+ year contract for a guy who's value largely comes from defense and speed and doesn't draw walks.
  8. Supposedly they tried, just like they did with Sano/Polanco/Kepler. But Buxton and Berrios are betting on themselves and will probably get paid handsomely as a result.
  9. I don't think Alex has shown that the Twins did some disservice by keeping him down. He's only had significant game action in 2 out of the last 4 years. Injuries, COVID, and underperformance of everyone on the MLB roster means he has an opportunity now but if he doesn't turn it around he'll likely be back in St. Paul in a week to keep working on things. He'll be fine eventually but right now he's a struggling rookie on a struggling team that needs stability and wins.
  10. Kiriloff had another one driven to the wall in center the day before. I have faith he’ll start getting them to drop in.
  11. I’m not convinced the window is even open. Too many hitters built a reputation off a juiced ball, and now without it half the lineup looks very pedestrian. Buxton, Arraez, Cruz, and Donaldson are the only really positive hitters. And most of those guys are injury risks. Everyone else is league average or replacement-level at the plate. Polanco is looking toast ever since he and the ball were both de-juiced. Rotation is competitive, which is a nice development from years past. But Maeda might be struggling to prove last year was legit and Berrios has never quite proven he can be a stopper or bury a good team being going 6-7 strong. The bullpen is a mishmash of failed starters and junk ballers that are good enough for regular season matchups but get exposed in the playoffs.
  12. Are we going to go through a double-header without ever getting into the other team's bullpen? Woof.
  13. 100% that big rally could have been entirely avoided if Buxton was out there to catch that first hit that dropped near Cave. Completely changes everything.
  14. Difference here being that Wes Anderson wants a certain profile & quality of pitches thrown for strikes.
  15. I've been a believer in Rooker succeeding due to how hard he works at studying hitting, swing mechanics, pitches, and then using that to evolve to get better. He's cerebral and self-aware enough to figure out what's going on and try to make adjustments. It speaks to the apparent progression when he moves up a level, struggles, and then comes around. He might not have a naturally elite 'hit' tool but he'll eke out every ounce of ability.
  16. I wonder if this is due to the pitcher trying to throw to a side to get a ball hit that way, and missing their spots. Add to that the hitters not wanting to swing towards the shift and you've got a recipe for more balls.
  17. I hope Donaldson has a little more time in the field than that, otherwise we're going to have a logjam between him, Sano, and Rooker. And maybe add Kirilloff to that mix depending on how his outfield defense looks in the big leagues. I assume they've had him cross-training at 1B for a reason...
  18. Good luck signing Berrios to an extension after yanking him 75 pitches into a solid playoff performance. Both games could have been saved if the starter was allowed to go another inning and we didn't have to dig deeper into the bullpen in the 9th...
  19. I'm not sure how open the window even was, but it's going to be tough to field a better team next year than they had this year. Hill and Odo are likely gone. Cruz isn't getting any younger and appeared to fade down the stretch in this shortened season. Rosario will need to be replaced, probably by an unprepared rookie. Buxton and Donaldson are huge health risks every year. They're locked into Kepler and Sano who have yet to find consistent success. May is probably gone, Romo will be gone. The team is going to be too cash strapped to add serious free agent help, so they'll have to get lucky in the scrap bin per usual. They'll win games but it's gonna be a challenge to build from this into a serious contender next year.
  20. And now we enter 6 months of winter and begin an unbelievably depressing Minnesota sports abyss. Vikings and Wolves are trash fires. MLB offseason will be another disappointing slow burn with little to show for it. Not much in the sports world to look forward to until April.
  21. Pulled at 75 pitches?!? With 1 run and 2 hits? C'mon man.
  22. This is getting embarrassing. And for a pitching staff that all year had success on the philosophy of “just throw your best pitch”, how does Romo throw his worst pitch in that situation? Walking in the go ahead run should never happen. Make them put it in play and take your chances!
  23. Spoke it into existence. How about using your powers for the Good Guys for a change?
  24. That's what I'm talking about though. If Buxton misses extended time and your plan is to move someone else over and then backfill for that guy, you've now weakened 2 defensive positions. Then at some point one of those guys gets hurt or needs a few days off and you pretty quickly have a clown show in the outfield like we did at times last year. As far as I've seen, Cave is only a passable defender in short stints.
