  1. I can appreciate your patience. Until recently I was there with you, however it seems this team's pitching is not ready. I'm not understanding point #1. I don't think you trade an asset for a "#3 at best" type of pitcher, esp. when someone like Santana won't be around long and you have to think about his replacement. Regarding point #3, I think they have a shot to make the playoffs, however I think it is unlikely that they will. Furthermore, if they make the playoffs, they are not likely to win a playoff series regardless of who they pick up because they can't/won't pick up 2 starters and 5 relievers. Thus, picking up one player for this year is a pointless idea. Regarding point #4, you are describing the previous GM's propensity to pay in this range for pitchers who were good once. This GM, hopefully, has different ideas. Look at Gray's splits -- rather than just his FIP -- and tell me with a straight face how he is on the road to a 3.50 ERA (2+ years ago) again instead of a 5.50 ERA (last year) again. Any smart team that bets on Gray would be doing so for this year only. Any good years beyond this one would be an unexpected bonus. Gray's future in the league is likely that of a journeyman unless he pulls a Cy Young year out of his back pocket.
  2. Liriano's dominance as a rookie is something we will never see by a pitcher ever again. Berrios is playing well, but his first season is a vastly different story. This is his second season now. Berrios is on a more typical MLB track. He is probably the real deal.
  3. The Twins would have to buy too much to win a playoff series, but selling right now would send the wrong message. If someone comes calling for Dozier and the trade makes sense, make the move, but do so at the last possible second because the team could take a nose dive after anyone is sold off. Any moves would have to be made with the eye on 2018. The Twins are closer to competing than we imagined, but it's probably not this year without a major epiphany shared among half the pitching staff.
  4. Re: Sonny Gray, reports are that the Astros are already talking to the As about him. Four things: 1) Considering trading off assets like Gordon for Gray is lunacy. 2) Good luck outbidding the Astros in any case. 3) Why trade off a prospect in a year where the Twins will either not make the playoffs or will make another 1st round exit? The As don't need Dozier. 4) Gray might not be a free agent until 2020, but he is going to be expensive going forward. This could be a bust for a guy who might not be good enough to make a playoff starting roster.
  5. Why do the Twins suck so much at Target Field? This isn't a new problem.
  6. Berrios is the future ace of the team. As the Twins are not likely to go to the playoffs, whoever is the "ace" or "game 1 starter" right now is probably not important to consider. But if we must, it's Santana.
  7. Cleveland clearly wants first place more than the Twins, as Cleveland is pitching and hitting much better this series. We'll find out soon if this is the end of the Twins being in first place, or if it's the beginning of them figuring out how to play tough games. With this pitching, it's probably the former. In any case, the Twins will have to recover after this series is through....
  8. No disagreement there, seeing as so far there have been no changes apart from the catcher.
  9. The problems this team has are all inherited from previous management. To us dedicated fans it seemed obvious that the pitching staff needed 75% turnover. This would have seemed bonkers to any incoming GM -- even GMs who look at the stat sheets -- so it's not surprising that they wanted to take things slower and see things for themselves.
  10. The last I heard, which was a month ago, the MLB was working on making it available online. I'm not mailing my hard copy to you. The new one is not much different from what you read in the old one, if you try to read it objectively instead of to try to prove an opinion.
  11. Then I'm not sure about the basis of your dispute which appears to be very wordy considering you can't find anything. In any case, the one you are looking at states that second opinions are always required. I believe the old CBA said a second opinion must be filed within 30 or 45 days. This is always the case, even if the player was only on the DL for the minimum amount of time. Standard practice is for teams to get the second opinion at the first reasonable opportunity as it makes little sense to get a second opinion a month later. The commissioner's office keeps doctors on staff to review everything that comes through.
  12. You're looking at the wrong rule book. Try looking at the CBA, which is where rules of this nature reside.
  13. It's all in the rule book.
  14. The Royals dominating with a great bullpen but bad starters isn't correct. I know it's an oft-repeated narrative in Twins territory, but it did not exist. The Royals starters were good in the time period in question, as was their defense.
  15. Last year, pitchers for some teams found great success by pitching down and away. This year, most teams are doing it and the dominant teams last year have lost their edge. Take a look at which part of the strike zone Grossman has success. As long as pitchers do not adjust to him as being an exception, he will light it up on offense. Though he probably won't be an exception for long. Increasingly hitters -- including Twins hitters -- are focusing on this part of the strike zone. The next dominant pitching team will exploit this.
  16. Wimmers can't pitch against lefties at all and his control is barely good enough against righties. If your point is that Wimmers is young and will hopefully improve, I agree. Not sure he needs to be in the majors to learn, though. Pressly can hit 99 mph but he can't find the strike zone consistently. He seems to know where he needs to throw it because he places it properly sometimes. I think we'd be OK with him slowing to 96 and throwing strikes. In any case, if he doesn't get things right this year this is probably his last rodeo. It's doubtful he's a Twin next year regardless of what happens. Pressly/Wimmers are not interchangeable pitchers so we should not see this as "moving around the chairs." No manager would flip a coin to decide whether to use these two unless utterly deranged. Maybe the team thinks they need more heat in the pen for the next stretch of games. That's not Wimmers, that's for sure.
  17. Are you suggesting he be put on the DL when he is not injured? There is a convoluted process for putting players on the DL that must be followed, and an equally convoluted process for removing them. The process is pretty much air tight. - Team doctor signs off on it - Second opinion doctor signs off on it, sometimes this is the player's doctor - League doctor signs off on it If the player, team, or league disputes what is going on, more doctors get involved. All teams + the commissioner get full visibility of each step. Follow this process again to remove the player from the DL....
  18. I have never been more frightened for this country after watching this Jeff Sessions charade. When one group can decide to pick and choose which laws to they will follow, we have very little left.
  19. When I moved to Dallas from the Twin Cities, I was surprised by the way they did sports content. In the Twin Cities (at least back then), although they only talked about local teams they at least showed the scores for all games on the screen. Dallas media didn't bother with any of that.
  20. I don't remember that. What I remember is every team saying he was "cooked" and that the Twins were fools for getting him on a 3-year contract. The narrative was that the Twins knew he would only last 1 year but they could only get him to sign for a 3 year deal. I remember this vividly as it is this story that got "cooked" into my player description vocabulary.
  21. He has already committed to going to college on a scholarship -- UC Irvine. Look at their W-L record the past 10+ years. If a player doesn't like the team that drafted them, they simply go to college and get drafted again later. This happens every year.
  22. Willingham was traded in 2014. Where is 2012 coming from? Doumit had a higher WAR with the Twins in 2013 than Willingham and commanded half the salary....
  23. Argh. He might be going to college. Potentially wasted pick.
  24. Or Captain and Tennille!
