  1. This question gets asked a lot. Poor Rockies.
  2. As we expected before the season began, almost the entire pitching staff is a dumpster fire. How the heck is this team winning games? This team is incredibly lucky, the pitching staff is having their meltdowns all on the same days, resulting in lopsided losses but still a lot of wins. Very strange stuff, but it's inevitable that the wheels will come off. Unfortunately Dozier has taken the dip that we expected him to take. The Twins can probably still get one pitching prospect for him, I suppose. Even if Dozier goes on his usual mid-to-late season tear, I doubt what the Twins could get in return for him changes that much. Teams know who he is, though I suspect he would probably be great in the playoffs no team is going to bring that up during negotiations. Unfortunately, Polanco is having some rookie struggles, but a move like this would be for next year+ and not this year, so losing Dozier's production would not be a big deal. Losing his personality, I don't know. I would imagine he is a leader in the clubhouse, but like it or not this is going to be Sano's team for years to come.
  3. Why would I do that? I think the Twins will finish under .500, and yet I'm also not advocating trading off assets. Until the Twins fall there it is an error to make big moves. We have to let things play out before we make decisions. If they surprise me and keep winning, that's great. If they fall off, sure start planning for next year. A couple of years ago the first-place Athletics made some panic moves like this to try to "improve" the team and ended up not even making the playoffs. The same thing happened to the Twins in 01. You're acting like the Twins have a chance to make the playoffs this year. I contend that they don't have a chance, so making changes is pointless. However, we have to wait for them to prove they're not good enough by failing before we start dismantling ... and even then they have to be careful about what they do. It's not an automatic that Santana should go.
  4. Exactly. They can even dangle him a bit to see if there are any takers. But if not, they can keep him and have a dependable arm for another year. Nothing wrong with that for a team that still needs a pitching rebuild -- having at least one dependable veteran as they turn-over nearly everyone else can't be an error.
  5. I don't understand the "Molitor only plays veterans" thing. I'm betting that if I bothered to research this, I would find this to be "fake news" and upon providing the evidence people would ignore it and carry on with the narrative anyway. Molitor hasn't been given superstars during his entire tenure, possibly excepting Hunter. He plays what he's got, and everybody has been given enough rope to hang themselves. The Twins had 28 pitchers last year and at least 20 of them were pitchers of zero reputation. He also gave James Beresford 10 games in spite of the fact that he will never amount to a hill of beans -- Beresford knew that, Molitor knew that, and the front office knew that. It's pretty much impossible that Molitor sits behind his desk every morning and thinks, "I can't play this guy, he only has 2 years of MLB experience." I would bet nearly anything that Molitor doesn't think this way. He coddlies ROOKIES, sure, but so does every team, and that's not a negative on Molitor but a positive.
  6. The Twins went 3-7 early in the year. The 2016 Cubs went 1-9 at one point, and 2-6 in another. The 1992 Twins had stretches of 2-7 (twice), 3-7, 3-6.... I'm hoping you follow baseball enough to know that you can't make panic moves due to a small stretch of games.
  7. "Underthinking" would be asking questions like "Is he a #1? Is he a #2?" GMs know they have five starting pitching slots they can upgrade, not 2. If a team feels like they are one "plus" starter away from a championship they will be open to this trade, and Santana might be one of the few "plus" guys available. Of course we are assuming that the Twins would trade him. If they trade him off, the gains they made by getting Berrios ready will be for naught -- they will be back down to 1 competent starting pitcher. They can still keep Santana for another year to give them time to add more arms.
  8. Any team who would trade for him would be competing this year. Barring injury, competitors will already have a 1 and a 2. This doesn't mean a competitor would not target Santana as an arm who could help them, it means that teams won't be thinking of it the way you are. Instead of overthinking it this way, look at recent history. Have pitchers with a history like Santana's been traded at the deadline? Yes. Did the other team get some juicy prospects in return for these trades? Yes. Does this mean any of this can or should happen? No.
  9. If the Twins keep playing well through June, why sell anybody? This would be a TR move.
  10. I was trying to figure out if you are attacking the premises because you don't like the premises or because you don't like the conclusion. I was thinking it was the former, but by your note it seems like it's the latter.
  11. At this point, I Don't Know is on third.
  12. Aren't those the same thing? If Mauer profiles a certain way, the defense will shift.......
  13. But the topic is keep him v. not keep him. Are you advocating keeping him because you feel he is unknowable, or getting rid of him because he you feel he is unknowable?
  14. True. Statcast hurt Mauer a lot. People thought he was spraying the ball all over the field, but it turns out he wasn't. His grounders tend to go one way and his fly balls go the other. Before statcast, no one made that connection, they just thought he could hit it anywhere.
  15. Mauer has been playing well since this was originally posted. April stats are often misleading. Turns out he is on pace for his best year since 2013 and not the worst year of his career. Patience is a virtue in baseball. The OPs May prediction for Mauer was actually conservative.
  16. I'm not sure what you are advocating. Are you saying the Twins should let him go, or not?
  17. He will probably return in the manner that Joe Nathan returned. That is, if Perkins is valuable again, it's not going to be this year.
  18. Boshers has a 2.57 ERA and a 173 ERA+. 0% of his inherited runners have scored. He can give the team more than one inning of relief work when he comes out. If you look at his Pitchf/x, he knows exactly where he needs to throw it both to lefties and to righties and he has the skill to do it. Are you just looking at his FIP and ignoring everything else? How did this strategy work out for Nolasco? At the very least look at his xFIP or something.
  19. I'm not sure he is smart enough to be making value judgments as to which stance is more advantageous. I think he's a typical racist twit who exhibits dual morality. He thinks that people like him should get all privileges, and people not like him are worthless. This does not make him any different from the rest of the GOP, mind you, though he is more severe than most. He has no filter.
  20. I feel like the Indians will improve slowly but incrementally. I don't think they'll go on any long winning streaks. The Twins are hitting like a team that is going to get hot if the pitching can make it over the hump. Mejia might be a #4 long-term but I'm hoping he can perform like a #3 for much of the year. If this happens, the Twins will do a lot of damage over the coming months.
  21. The Astros are unstoppable at the moment, and they were pretty damn good before this 10-game winning streak too. It's a good thing we kept our composure and didn't panic. Imagine how embarrassed we would feel if we overreacted to one bad series.
  22. Make the bet but don't go all in. If any team heats up and pulls away, it will be the Twins, but equally likely would be the title being decided very late in the year. If the latter, anything can happen.
  23. In spite of the problems this team has, they keep on winning. What some are advocating can be compared to filing for divorce when the marriage is good, but you don't like the way your spouse butters toast. I trust that this team is having the right conversations behind the scenes. Like players, management has to adjust constantly. The Twins need some pitching help and if this team can step up and win with what they've got until the trade deadline, I'm betting they will get some. Teams should never trade off assets for relievers, but they can make deals where cash is the primary factor.
  24. I agree. This team has a lot to be proud of right now. They're not perfect, but no one on the planet expected them to be. I'm just not seeing a good reason for the rising blood pressures around here. If "management" starts blowing decisions if the Twins are still in it in August/September, yeah, let's get into it.
