    No one can be sure anyone is ready. Plenty of teams call up guys before they prove stuff. I think KC has a pitcher that was in college this year. ......but for some reason, MN players must prove a positive, which is actually impossible.

    I think counting on Mauer to be an elite 1b at this point is hope, not strategy. There is little evidence he is tending up, and he spent years catching and should age like one.

    Well, it now looks like 5 or 6 years. ......because apparently it won't be next year. If they actually try at some point, rather than wait.

    I think Trevor is now under rated. He's slightly above average as a 3B.......that is super valuable. No way I deal him now, Sano is at least half a year away, if not more.Plus, he could be your RF or 1B or DH. Keep Trevor, and trust him.

    Ha, I'm not trying to win anything. I'm not even really arguing here, I'm just trying to have a mature baseball discussion. Sometimes we aren't as tolerant as we could all be, but I think most of the threads so far this last week or so have been pretty mature. Everything I post on this site is about performance and process, not about the people. Sometimes we forget that .....

    It would be cool if Buxton was ready day one, what odds do you give? I'd say about 5%.

    Aren't players in the majors more likely to be good in the majors than guys in A ball? I think he's talking about that, but i'm not sure.....

    I like the guy fine, from what you can tell from afar. yes, it is speculation, hence my use of the word "opinion", not fact, or even stating it like a fact. It is my opinion, nothing more or less. I've even typed here that I have no shred of evidence to support it.

    That's not what Ryan says, that not what any talking head on the internet says. Ryan does not approve the picks.

    THE GM DOES NOT make the draft picks. The scouting director does that. The best way TR has contributed to the draft is by fielding awful MLB teams, giving the team a shot at more elite players.

    I actually think Ryan is a very good scout. I think he is a good people person. I think he's pretty good with the public. I think he does a lot well. I am not convinced he does enough well, nor is he embracing the changes in the game (though that's based on outcomes and on field, not on anything more) in the last few years actively. to me, this is a big year. If they make progress and add talent (not the draft, every team adds talent in the draft), and they don't go all cheap, I'm ok with him having his job. But I'm skeptical.

    Who was on the 07 list? Who was on the 06 list, and did they graduate to the Twins? The guys on the 08 list doesn't include anyone from 07, or they graduated? Two guys on the 08 list in the top 52 were acquired by Bill Smith for a guy EVERYONE knew would not sign here. Sounds like a trade Ryan would be lauded for.

    I'm not sure I was clear, in my post.....I think he has a shot to be quite good. I don't think we know that he is yet, and he should play. I'm not convinced something changed, but if it did, and it worked, great. But the story that something changed is used a lot, so I am always skeptical.

    It is all the information we have......I guess we could just say "doug is younger, ergo a better candidate" since that is all we really KNOW at this point.

    Which is the new practice, since hitters have been taught to hit the low pitch for the last 5-10 years, they aren't as good with the high pitch (that's the meme I read on line anyway).

    It has been more than 1 poor season, hasn't it? I wouldn't fire someone after 1 poor season. That's my question, how many poor seasons does it take?

    I HATE the phrase post-mortem with a passion, and I am in IT, so I see it a lot.....can we find another phrase that isn't about death? I don't think September tells us much, people claim that changes were made all the time, after a hot streak. No one says, "here is the change I just made" and then sees what happens. He's young, they have no chance of making the playoffs next year w/o major changes, he should start in RF until they determine he isn't good enough and it matters if he's good enough, imo.

    It seems unfair to say "Its too early to cast judgment on Ryan's second tenure." without saying what isn't too early, doesn't it?

    How many years of 90 + loss seasons before I can judge him at all?

    If you never sign players for big money, as a philosophy, it is pretty hard to tie up the team with bad contracts. Who cares if he spends too much money, other than the Pohlads? They are now on year 4 of 90+ losses, and somehow that's not on Ryan at all? I'm. Baffled.

    Managing is all about playing the odds.......not sacrifice bunting in the third inning, not IBB, not a lot of old school stuff, so we'll disagree on the importance of stats in managing and coaching. We can only go off the information we have, the only information we have about Dougie and his thoughts on the fact this is 2014, and not 1990, is what he said in that interview.

    I've lost interest in Mientkiewicz completely. He is as old skewl as they get. The Twins need to embrace the concept that you can learn how to be better at what you do from almost any angle....and Dougie is 100% not there from what we can tell. And, ya, a guy that starts a fight as your leader? Not a fan. Pass.

    80% of the starting pitching last year was FA or the best SP they've graduated in years, and they were the worst SP staff in baseball. 60% were FA that Ryan signed. According to all the former front office people on line, you judge a GM by trades, FA signings, and overall results (not the draft, that's the scouting director, though that person is hired by the GM.....). They traded two starting CF, and had no one to replace them. They signed 3 FA SP, and were the worst. They signed Kubel and Bartlett and put them on the roster. They keep thinking Hicks can play, with no backup plan at all. Their OF consisted mostly of infielders or AAA guys the last two years. Other than losing a lot by fielding a terrible team, so they are more likely to draft well, what has this GM done to really make the team better? Don't forget, the reason there are no players to pay right now, is that no one acquired in Ryan's last tenure was good enough to make the roster and stick and earn big bucks......
