  1. Or, whoever wrote it thinks the only way to get pitching is to trade some existing MLB players, and roll the dice with young guys.....
  2. If they don't make a trade, with no 2B or SS or SP, then I don't think it will matter....
  3. Just you. Have you ever met him? Talked to him? I don't get this kind of comment at all.
  4. His stuff looks 4/5 to me, but his results say he could be a 3 long term. There aren't many 1s in the majors, less than 30 for sure......Frankly, if he's a 3/4, that's a good, valuable player. Any player can have success for a year or two, the real test to me will be next year. If this level of success is sustained, then I'll be more of a believer that he's "really" a 3. Either way, I think he's good enough to be a legit MLB starter, and the Twins should be happy he's here right now.
  5. Not sure I agree, I think Plouffe is comfy at 3B, and Valencia showed over more than 1 year whether he was good or not....
  6. So are the teams that want to trade something legit for a pitcher....
  7. I look forward to next week, when you (hopefully) rip the Twins for once again not putting a guy on the DL right away. Unreal on Plouffe (I'm assuming they'll DL him soon).....unreal on the training staff. Just unreal. Didn't TR talk about accountability throughout the organization? What does accountability mean, exactly?
  8. Assuming neither is injured, I think KLAW has already said they are the top 2 prospects for next year, given what we know right now. That is very subject to change, as someone will step up, but both of these guys would be at or near the top. That said, they will be college seniors, and have no leverage. At this point, it is between taking real money now, or going to school and losing a year of income (and maybe making more, and maybe making less).
  9. Bill Smith was not the gm when the draft failed to produce players the last few years, in terms of adding to the MLB team. Bill Smith did not quit, rather than handle the Santana situation. Ryan is not free from being part of the problem. And, this offense was 11th in the AL last I checked, in terms if runs scored, so I don't get why people think it is fine and dandy. They did not spend money to get better, they filled New holes with cheaper guys, but rather than invest those savings, they pocketed them.
  10. Got it, thanks. It's a good analysis of WAR and what you can get in terms of prospects. Thanks for writing it.
  11. Is the WAR of the player, or the players returned? Because isn't that part of the question, how much WAR did you give up to get what WAR in return? Also, if your team as currently constructed utterly stinks, but you think you have 2-4 starters in the minors ready in, say, 2015, wouldn't you want to trade your current players and get 1-4 more guys that will be ready in 2015? It can be done, but it's hard to do well.
  12. from the free chat on espn yesterday: Can Mark Appel be a dominant pitcher in the pros? [h=6]Klaw (1:37 PM) [/h] Define 'dominant.' Is a #2 starter, top 40-45 starter in the majors, dominant? That's what he probably is.
  13. We can only project the future based on what we know today...so I'm not sure how else to assess someone other than logic and hypothesis and theory. Since we never see these guys play (unlike basketball or football), I can only really go off what access and comments we have to online scouts and commentors (like BA, Law, other ESPN scouts......). So, pick another way to assess or rank someone, but that's all we really have. Sure, BA and others will be wrong, a lot, but I'm not sure what else we have to go on.
  14. thrylos, thanks for doing this. Appreciated. I am not a scout, nor an expert on baseball. I'm just a fan. From what I read on the 'net, Appel projects as a 2 or so. That's assuming that you qualify a 1 as ACE, and most articles I read say there are 15 or so Aces on the planet at any one time. So, projecting as a 2 isn't a "bad" thing, not at all.
  15. btw,. it's time to stop calling him a future HoF player. 3 catchers in the AL Central have a higher WAR than him this year, he's missed many, many games with injuries, and this team isn't winning squat during his prime.....
  16. Who cares where he was born? He chose to move his first day he turned 18. He had as much choice about where he eas born as this chair I am sitting on has. As for you treatise, it is well written, but fruitless. Booing is emotional, not logical. So making a logical argumentakes no sense.
  17. Awesome defense of Ryan and rip of Smith...does anyone think anything changed in the farm system in the 3 years Smith was in charge? And, it isn't Ryan's last draft. Three years, now, three years, name the legit prospects that have come up to the Twins and helped in the last three years. As for Smith vs Ryan and what the difference of philosophy was, we don't really know what the disagreement was, from what I recall. It's all been conjecture.
  18. Better than this, if you refuse to trade for or sign expensive players....who has come up in the last THREE years, the you feel is a legit MLB player? Three years....Valencia? Plouffe? Revere? Hendriks? Not one legit player, contributing to winning now, in three years. No new OF. 1 new IF. No starting pitchers (do we think Hendriks is ready?). That's not livable, not if you rely on your farm system pretty much exclusively.
  19. If the attendance does drop, do you think they'll cut payroll again?
  20. The Wilf family would have bought Yu's services, and maybe Reyes also. There is no doubt in my mind that the Wilf family would spend $20-40MM more per year than the Pohlad's are, maybe even more. On the bad side of the coin, they'd be hiring and firing GMs and coaches too fast....so that's a tough call. The budget hasn't fluctated up and down based on attendance and tv revenue, it is down significantly this year from last. I'd bet anyone that wants that they don't outperform the budget this year.
