  1. do people really think the media wants to destroy athletes in general? Those guys are their meal tickets on ESPN and most tv and newspapers........this isn't some grand media conspiracy. This is a guy that beat his kid, and many people find that repugnant. Should all those people just shut up, and let it keep happening, if they find it evil/wrong/bad?
  2. The media is NOT destroying someone. They did something bad. The media may be making it worse, they may be pushing an agenda, but the people brought this on themselves. And, the old, "people didn't act on something else, so they can't act on this" argument is a logical fallacy. And, no, someone does not need to be perfect to point out that someone else is bad. That is also a logical fallacy. If someone cheats on their wife, are they exempt from point out that slavery and murder is wrong? Of course not.
  3. Agreed on all counts. I mis-read the intent of your post, clearly.
  4. Role models falling can lead to cynicism.....IMO. That's the big issue with them falling, but, I think we do see kids emulate the behavior of role models. Even the mistreatment of other people. Probably not all the way to murder, but we see trash talking, and I have seen / heard kids talk about women badly based on what they have heard athletes say. When the kids were younger, not as they became teens (but then, my kids migrated away from some of those kids, so who knows).
  5. BS this is media created, if that is your point. Media coverage has nothing to do with my (or others') feelings about what Rice and Peterson did (or allegedly did). Nothing at all. And, frankly, in a free society, that is kind of the media's role, communicating difficult issues to people so they can make informed decisions. I suppose we could become Russia, and have the media only tell us stuff the government and big business want us to hear/read/see. I'm not in favor of that, frankly. The media did not hit Rice's wife or Peterson's kid. This isn't about the media at all.
  6. On another board I was on, there was a great debate about authors......can you enjoy an author's work if he/she is a bad human being? Just like athletes, can you root for them if they are bad (in your opinion) people? It is a tough call. I personally can't root for a bad person on a team I like. I am quite happy that my kids aren't really sports' fans much. They won't be burned by stuff like this so much as some of us have been. Kirby and AP were/are two of my favorite athletes to watch/enjoy. This has been a bummer of a week for me, but it has reminded me of why I root for teams now, and not really people.
  7. I think he'll be fine also......but not elite. That's the issue, imo. It isn't a ton of money, so I doubt it matters, but this is why you don't sign RP to long term deals. History has shown this, outside of a handful of outliers.....
  8. He walked the bases loaded. Ugh. He is playing Suzuki right now, and not Pinto. Ugh. He, like most managers, is stuck in the past on managing to the "save" stat. ugh. He pinch runs with two outs all the time, with a runner on first. That guy is very much not likely to score. ugh. He sacrifice bunts early in games too often. He gets mad at the press for asking him strategy questions (part of his job is talking to the press). They have been worse and worse at the "little things" the longer he has been in charge. Ugh. He seems, to me, to prefer plucky veterans over unknown younger players. He appears to be unable to fire one of his coaches, even if that guy is not doing his job well (he is, after all, the manager, not some flunky). That's part of your job, holding others accountable and being able to make hard choices, not just about players, but coaches too. How long of a list do you want, about how people feel about Gardy? There are a lot of evidence and management studies out there in the world, they all say that management needs to be refreshed every 10 years or so......new voices and thoughts are needed.
  9. I don't buy that at all. They are trying to throw their best pitch, regardless of level. Especially a starter. I think that's bunk, frankly. Now, if you are saying it is the number of pitches, not number of innings, that is probably valid. Either way, I'm not worried about the number of innings/pitches this year, I'm worried they were both hurt.
  10. At least 2 more? Ugh. Really ugh. That's a long time to be bad.
  11. But they don't need a better 3B or 2B right now, on defense, do they? And most believe Mauer will be better on D next year. We aren't talking about a vacuum here. Where do you propose they get these much better pitchers next year?
  12. I disagree. It appears easier to find good OF than good SP, if you just look at the counts of them in the majors.
  13. So, if Gardy is only successful when they have great players, and awful when they have bad ones, why keep him? The argument seems to be that the success of the team is largely out of his hands. If so, why keep him around if he doesn't make the team better than they should be?
  14. This is the point I've been making on threads for about 2 weeks....everyone complaining about the defense and how it needs to get better, all while saying they should keep these hitters around. The game has both aspects. Just because a guy can hit (though not at a great level yet) like Arcia, that does not mean he is a good MLB player. If he can't field, and they have Vargas, there is not room for both of them (especially if you have no CF or LF also). I totally disagree this boils down to strikeouts. This boils down to they have terrible defensive players. You won't make Arcia or Santana great fielders by getting more strikeouts. Balls that still should have been caught or cut off will still happen. They need to decide if they are willing to live with terrible defense (and, therefore, a higher ERA than they should have) or not.
  15. So what does he do? If he can only win with great talent, is he actually good at his job, or is he just along for the ride? Good leaders lead, even lesser talent. Good coaches make their students better. I have no idea if he's good or not, but most organizations need new leadership after 7-10 years to remain successful and grow. And, the BS about Smith remains unreal to me......people know it takes 4-6 years for players to graduate from the minors. If there were no good young players in the Smith years, that's because the minors were barren when he took over.....if the minors are now graduating players, those guys were likely acquired by Smith or the beginning of TR's return. The team is going to lose 90+ games for a 4th year in a row. If I ran a company, and the leadership spent lots of money and resources to improve a part of the business, and utterly failed, again, at improving that part of the business, someone would be fired after this much time. Luckily for the Twins, they have tv revenue even if they are terrible.......
  16. I'll ask again, how many 90 loss seasons before the GM or manager or both are not good at their job?
  17. So, it isn't the manager's fault, and apparently not the GM's fault? We should just expect a team to lose more than 90-95 games for at least four years every 10 years or so?
  18. An obvious choice, but a good one, Seth..... I agree with pretty much all of this, actually. Some good years here......not sure how to handle the guys with lower upside, should they move to RP in the majors? That's how most RP are born......
  19. Gardy should be replaced because eventually every organization needs new thinking to get better.* They have shown very little indication that they are thinking differently, on the field. There is research in the NFL (no idea if there is in MLB), that coaches generally have about a 10 year life span of effectiveness. *rules/guidelines are not 100%. They are expectations and how the world normally works. Sure, there are exceptions, but is Gardy really an exception?
  20. Why would Milone struggle, other than not being good? They are still nearly/last in SP outcomes produced, again this year. After how many years are we allowed to actually expect improvement? When does someone say, 5 years is too much, or 10 years is too much. For two years now, this board has said "be patient, they'll be better next year. If they aren't, then I'll judge them".....but that gets said every year. When is the year we should actually expect the SP not to be the worst in the league?
  21. I don't care about the FIP/xFIP measure.......especially if people are saying not to change any position players but LF......how do people expect the D to get fixed? The Twins have been awful at SP for years, now. They graduated the one guy they have drafted and developed recently, and called up 2 guys TR traded for, and had 3 FA signings, and they are still awful. How is that NOT on the GM? According to all the former GM/FO types on line, the two ways to judge GMs is trades and FA signings, since the scouting director does the drafting. On the coaching front, this team does not do the little things right. That is on coaching, not on talent. If you claim it is not on coaching, what, exactly, do coaches do other than coach?
  22. Terry Ryan signed three free agent pitchers, and they are still the worst starters in baseball, and you only want the coach gone? The GM and all field staff should go.
  23. Scarier thought is hoping that you draft an 18 year old, and he works out in 6-7 years......because at that rate, you don't have 5 starters. Plus, I'm told that it is nearly impossible to draft well past 10 or so (it is cyclical, I'm told), so the odds they draft good starters in 2 or 3 years when they aren't losing 90 games are low, right? If the Cubs do sign a legit FA this year, and it works, does that mean that now it has been done, and it is ok for other teams to do it?
