  1. An outside take on the signing..... http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/twins-add-another-perfectly-serviceable-pitcher-in-santana/#comment-4856980
  2. As I said.....it is about Meyer being better NOW, and not wanting to watch a worse pitcher at all. And, that this should have been done 2 years ago, when they had no real prospects...... I expect them to need 7 pitchers, but I'd prefer the better pitchers be here, and not in AAA, I think I've said that several times now.
  3. Here is my issue....I think Meyer and maybe May are BETTER than Nolasco and Gibson.....and they probably won't pitch unless something REALLY bad happens (not if Nolasco and Gibson are ok, but not bad). Lots of people worry about depth, I worry about the MLB team having the best player on it, not keeping guys in AAA so in case things go REALLY bad, they come up. I want them up when they are the better option (even if the existing option is acceptable). that is the delta in our position, I think.
  4. Should have done that last year with Meyer......and NONE of the guys you listed (that have come up in the last 4 years) are half the prospects as him, they aren't good comparisons at all (well, maybe Gibson, maybe).
  5. not sure what you can get for a SP in his mid-30s, that at his peak is median or just above median. Had they signed these kinds of guys 2 and 3 years ago, then I'd like your idea a lot more......which is why, imo, you don't wait to add talent.
  6. I am being quite positive about Meyer and May......don't get how that isn't clear. I wish they had signed Santana last year, and made the bridge start earlier, and end earlier. He's a nice pitcher.....
  7. If that was his plan, why not sign Santana last year.....a much better bridge for May/Meyer/Berrios would have been created? What changed?
  8. My take: 1. I'm glad they aren't sitting back and waiting for the farm. 2. I'm glad they are attempting to add talent to the awful pitching staff. 3. I'm not in love with the signing, but I do think it helps the team. 4. I don't think it's the dollars that might hinder the team, it's that they don't really have room for Meyer and May and Berrios now.......and they just traded for Meyer and May (leaving them w/o a CF for 2-3 years now), if those guys still aren't ready to help, that's three years with no payback. 5. I hope they have the guts to pull the plug on anyone that isn't pitching well, assuming Meyer is ready at that point (or May or Milone). If they just stick with the guys (if they are bad) because they are vets making money, that will be a bummer. 6. I'll be shocked if both Nolasco and Santana are better than league median this year, hoping to be shocked.
  9. And not just through the draft.....but through all channels. Which, they seem to be doing now. Don't love all the decisions. ......but at least they are trying. Now we need to judge the outcomes.
  10. I am warming to the signing.....they are definitely not just waiting for the farm to produce.
  11. No, it doesn't mean "must".....it means likely, probably. If you are decent at drafting, and add players in FA, you are probably better than if you don't add players (or let good players walk). I think you are confusing "odds" and probability with certainty.
  12. I'm neither for nor against this signing. I'm not sure he's all that good, but I am sure he's not bad (probably......). That's a step up. They also spent money to get better now, I like that part. I am a Meyer believer, so I hope they don't just keep waiting for some kind of "perfection" in AAA with him. Frankly, if they aren't bringing up Meyer right away, I'd trade him. May, Milone, Berrios in a few months.....plus others? If you aren't going to use Meyer this year, I'd rather they deal him than wait another year. And yes, I know pitchers get hurt....but they have a few holes to fill yet.
  13. Not a fan of what the Marlins are doing. I have no issue trading prospects, but not like this, imo.
  14. Hope they put him in the 'pen, and let him throw hard.......
  15. I don't read anyone saying that spending guarantees anything.....I see people suggesting that having a payroll under the median, year after year, while revenues are skyrocketing, right after getting a new stadium (that was sold as a way to stay competitive), all while NOT being competitive, well, that raises a question.....would they be more likely, or less likely to be competitive, if they had a median payroll? How "crippled" would they be right now had they spent on 3-5 year deals 3-5 years ago, for example?
  16. Since TR has never been turned down for money......I think this is about Ryan, not the owners. That's what they all say, every time money comes up.
  17. They'll pick someone.....2 years from now, no one will care. That's what I expect.
  18. We won't really know until we see if Molitor calls for bunts before the 7th inning, or the team doesn't shift at all, or if they do or don't do other things. As for players, they remind me of some of the Ops people I work with, they just want to keep doing things the way they've always done them, even in the face of evidence they shouldn't/can't. It's up to Molitor to put them in position to change that, imo.
  19. Like I said, every signing so far has been met here with, "that's too much money" or "that's too many years" or "I wouldn't sign that guy he's not good"......well, apparently, a hug number of MLB teams disagree.
  20. It is expensive to sign FAs.........if you are always saying "it is too expensive", you better have a farm system that produces, all the time, or you end up with Jason Tyner as your DH......and 4 or more years of 90+ loss seasons.
  21. I find it odd that the Sox and Tigers need to be lucky, with major league talent, but the Twins don't have to be more lucky to have minor leaguers be their future
  22. The problem with that depth is that it usually means you keep the better, younger, guy in AAA. I want the best players here, not waiting in AAA in case (when) someone gets hurt or struggles.
  23. he's 25 already.....time to move him up if he's close to ready.....
  24. Number 7 might be my all time favorite post on this site.
