  1. great article! And yes, combining "ball in play pitchers" with terrible defense shows a fundamental misunderstanding of strategy.
  2. Why are they Twins signing a bunch of mediocre RP, and not promoting these guys if they are so good? Lots of other teams are bringing up RP fast, this strategy doesn't do much if they insist on guys moving up one wrung a year......are any of the likely RP even in AA yet?
  3. I agree with Seth, they either come up to help before September, or they are in the minors all year. I don't see either getting the cameo treatment this year.
  4. God I hated that college reliever strategy. Hated it. Given the depth of other high upside starters right now, they should all move back to the pen, and up to the majors faster rather than slower. But, the Twins seem reluctant to do what other MLB teams are doing in that regard, so I have my doubts.
  5. Don't want to derail.....but there is another good article about framing on Fangraphs today.....
  6. Why is it likely he won't progress? we have quotes from an umpire that he did progress last year? Why are people so sure he's not actually good at this, given the tiny sample size? Given how little the Twins appreciate advanced stats, are we sure they are even looking at the "right" things to judge his defense? Let Pinto catch 40% of the time, and get some actual data on his defense at the MLB level. That should be the plan this year (should have been last year too...... but Gardy cared more about Suzuki's bonus than the long term good of the team, or so it appeared).
  7. Except the MOST LIKELY outcome for each team is that they not win 90 (except maybe WAS).....but if you asked the same system to project/predict if any team would win 90 or more, the answer would probably be yes. Those are two different questions, though.
  8. Toward the mean.....but not to his past. that's what I think. he'll still be a legit number 2 starter, and that's darn good (since there are only about 15 or so number 1, imo).
  9. Agreed. But, the Twins don't seem to care all that much about "advanced" statistics. Surprised they didn't hire Dave Stewart (other than he "isn't one of us").
  10. I find it somehwat specious to say Pinto can't play defense ..... we just haven't seen him enough to know. This is the same team that thought Hardy couldn't play defense....
  11. Great lineup. congrats on what looks like a great event.
  12. If only this thread could not be one person's thread, and be about the cool event.....If y'all want to talk about the other stuff, maybe move it. I know I'm not an admin, but I came to this thread to read about a cool event, not to re-hash an argument over and over. Great event. Have fun everyone. I probably can't make this work this year, alas* *alas, as I hope this is my last winter in MN, so this would be my last shot.
  13. That's what I get for glancing fast at work. Sorry, just ignore that post (assuming you have not already ignored all my posts, which I guess jokin has not......).
  14. Note that CF and SS have the same adjustment.....so for WAR purposes, Santana is not playing a more premium position. If I had to bet......I'd go with Arcia (I'm just going to assume he's healthy).
  15. Well, it's not how I would rebuild a team, but I can't argue with any of it. Having May, Meyer, and a bunch of RP sitting in AA and AAA? Waste of "healthy" arms. We are now 3 years into not having a CF, three years.
  16. Why would you want Hunter to help pick the next CF? Why would you think he's a good GM?
  17. I think the following will be up: Meyer, Sano, Rosario I think the following should be up, but might not for some reason I don't understand: Burdi Other RP whose names I'm not thinking of right now while I'm working I think the following will get looks: Polanco again Other RP late in the year Two random starting pitchers, not to include Berrios I think the following have a good shot in September: Berrios Lots of RP that weren't already called up I don't think Buxton comes up, unless one of the following happens: 1. He is a beast out of the gate, which I doubt 2. They are in the playoff hunt, except CF is an abomination and he's doing ok or better in AA 3. Tickets sales are awful, and they call him up in August or September to try to make some money
  18. If only there was a guy in AAA who could fill that spot, and had electric stuff.......and then another guy in AAA that could take his spot if he moved onto a full time starting role. Alas, that does not appear to be the case, from the most vaunted minor league system ever* *hyperbole, btw.
  19. Very much what I thought TR would do next. The pitching was terrible last year, and he's clearly not going with the prospects.....so this was obvious. I'd bet there is 1 more to come.
  20. I approve of this decision. Congrats to both sides.
  21. I read on FG that Buxton might be more hurt than we know.....but it sounded like speculation. Anyone got anything on this? Like, he might have a broken collarbone, is what I believe I read.
  22. People keep typing he is a good MLB defender....that is not what I saw, heard on the radio, or see in the stats.....where do people get this idea?
  23. If he wasn't handed the job last year, what was the other option, exactly? He didn't HIT that well even in the minors. Who, here, said "give up on him".....and, the Twins did not give up on Gomez, they traded for a starting SS.
