  1. Then put the 39 year old in LF, and keep the young guy at his natural position. Then I only hate the deal a little, not with the passion of 1000000000 burning suns* *ok, that's an exaggeration
  2. I would not sign here as a FA SP for a one year make good contract. It looks to be bad out there on defense. We can disagree on how bad, but does anyone think the OF defense will be anything other than bottom 5?
  3. this is true.....especially the spouse golf thing, sigh.....
  4. The Captain won gold gloves when he could barely move.....GG mean NOTHING.
  5. Or that the minors aren't doing their job in developing the right attitude. Look, I believe in leadership. I believe culture makes a difference. I just don't believe that it matters more than talent, skill, training. I do think, that if Hunter is a great leader, it makes a difference. But, if NOT ONE guy on the roster can do that now......that's a failure of the development staff, imo.
  6. And moving Arcia to LF is going to help him take better routes how?
  7. Who, among those that don't like this deal, do you think forgives Cuddeyer's defense? My guess is the people that forgive Cuddy's defense are the same people that think Hunter's defense is fine. If you don't believe the "stats" how about on Fangraphs where the fans rate defense? They hate his defense, with their eyeball test.
  8. I still don't get how this helps Arcia's long term development as an OF.......
  9. Let's just say that there are a lot of people that aren't sure Hunter is a great guy, and that must be a fair topic, if the "pro" crowd is going to keep bringing it up.
  10. They took up roster space, it isn't about money, but roster space and opportunity to try to find upside.
  11. Man.....theleviathon and I agree super strongly on something, and Seth also agrees with us.....something is really wrong here.
  12. The more I think about this, the more I hate it. It really reminds me of moving Young to LF to keep Cuddeyer happy, only worse. Has Arcia played LF in years or years? Why would any FA pitcher sign here, other than money, with this OF defense in front of them? Maybe their new plan is to just score a lot, and not worry about run prevention at all.
  13. So they move the young guy with a future out of position so they can sign a 39 year old.......how does that help when they are good?
  14. so, when the bullpen is exhausted in August, and the RP are all veterans.... They should have traded "high" on Burton, Duensing by now....and also Fien and Perkins.
  15. Relief pitchers, not starters. I think there are guys that could be up here now, and not older RP that won't be sent to the minors (that was their issue last year, imo). Jokin and I were talking about RP.
  16. The compelling reason to dump Duensing is to use the RP as a way to send players up and down to the minors, when they inevitably get tired (given the current SP rotation, that is likely). Plus, he's just not that good. At some point, you have to actually use your minor league system. It's time to stop relying on old guys that have no future with this team, and start using the minor league system.
  17. No, but that wasn't your point at all. Your point was that the age curves are different, so therefore they don't mean much......that's not what the delta in the two lines is about at all. It is clearly about changes in training and physical make up. My point in the last part was that this is a data point you'd use. Maybe my signature should add "this post might include a discussion on the use of data. That does not imply it is the only piece of data to use".
  18. The age curves are different due to drugs, training year round, and all the other stuff that is about how different peoples' bodies are (and training is) than it was in the old days. The delta in the lines isn't anything about what you are implying in that last bit at all. How else would you predict how well someone would age, other than looking at control charts? Just guess? That's not a good way to run a business.
  19. And that's why the bullpen gets tired every year, they refuse to be "uncomfortable" with young players. It is maddening that a rebuilding team won't give RP roles to guys that are dominating AAA or even AA, and yet feel no issue giving CF to such a player.
  20. The problem with keeping Duensing is options, and the willingness to send him to the minors......a team with numerous questions in the rotation needs to be able to send pitchers up and down to get them rest. There is no reason for a team this bad to pay a marginal RP $3MM. None at all. Plus, it would be nice if they actually used their minor league system, instead of talking about how great it is.....
  21. Could be? sure, every player could be bad....if you never sign anyone because they could be bad, you never sign anyone, ever. I don't anticipate that is a recipe for long term success. Do you think he will be?
  22. Really, at 31 or 32 you think he will be worthless?
  23. Declining from all star, 3 to 4 WAR player.....he would still have value. It isn't like he drops off the planet, probably.
