  1. not sure someone should win a job in spring training.....the issue with Hicks, for me, is they had no contingency plan in place at all.
  2. You are making our point.....they seem aggressive with hitters, and slow with pitchers.
  3. It's hard to understand how people don't see that two teams with similar records could arrive there differently........the Sox were top heavy, with awful players, the Twins had a bunch of meh players, and one great player. The Sox had little in the minors to help, the Twins supposedly have a lot in the minors to help soon. Their approach and outlook should be different. If the Sox can get rid of the massive holes, they can add wins fast. The Twins need to fix pitching holes, and either wait for the minors, or hope for improvement. The context of the two teams is very, very different, even if the results were the same last year.
  4. Wasn't a criticism, Seth, more an observation. I hate the use of averages all over society. Clearly some of these guys are young for their level.
  5. Except it's not a matter of opinion. they traded for him. that's done. They can attempt to sign him, but they are 100% independent events. They just are. Whether they sign him or not has nothing to do with what they gave up for him. It just doesn't. It's simple logic/math. They are independent events.
  6. The trade and the extension are 100% independent events. You are wrong on that. They didn't even really give up much to get him. The theme is that for NEXT YEAR, the Sox looked better when the thread was started, and that they had added a lot of players. Is that wrong? Have they not gotten better?
  7. Average is a silly measure......it doesn't take into account filler.....what is the age of actual prospects, that's the question.
  8. Not sure what any of that stuff for the extension has to do with what they did to get better THIS YEAR. Choosing to extend Jeff has nothing to do with that. Should they have just sat on the money, and NOT tried to get better? I don't understand your argument at all. They gave up nothing of real value in terms of players, and spent money. How is that bad?
  9. Given that they have 1 guy they drafted in the rotation, and really 1 guy last year, and no good guys the 2 years before that (I think I have Baker's departure time correct)......relying on prospects might not be the best plan......sometimes you have to go buy players. I see the last two offseasons as acknowledgements (finally) of just how bad they have been at developing SP. I just wish they had signed Santana last year, to make the bridge start earlier.
  10. Gibson had a lot less competition, right? Hughes, Nolasco, Santana, Gibson are starting on the roster on day 1, unless there is an injury. That leaves 1 spot for a guy that is a veteran, or that had some good starts last year, or that has a history of good starts, or for a guy they limited to 80 pitches a start in AAA last year that finished the year hurt......ok, maybe I biased those descriptions, but maybe not.
  11. Partly depends on how Molitor manages the bullpen usage, I'd think, among many other things. We can't even guess on that right now.
  12. I think I read that the "majority" of teams use 8 during a year, but not sure what that means, number of starts wise. Nor do I know if that is indicative of how well a team does.....like, if you have 10, is that worse than having 6?
  13. Uh.....you don't think adding those guys makes the Sox better? Wow.
  14. I just want the 5 best to start here, and be here....and not have better pitchers in AAA because "rookies".
  15. An outside take on the signing..... http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/twins-add-another-perfectly-serviceable-pitcher-in-santana/#comment-4856980
  16. As I said.....it is about Meyer being better NOW, and not wanting to watch a worse pitcher at all. And, that this should have been done 2 years ago, when they had no real prospects...... I expect them to need 7 pitchers, but I'd prefer the better pitchers be here, and not in AAA, I think I've said that several times now.
  17. Here is my issue....I think Meyer and maybe May are BETTER than Nolasco and Gibson.....and they probably won't pitch unless something REALLY bad happens (not if Nolasco and Gibson are ok, but not bad). Lots of people worry about depth, I worry about the MLB team having the best player on it, not keeping guys in AAA so in case things go REALLY bad, they come up. I want them up when they are the better option (even if the existing option is acceptable). that is the delta in our position, I think.
  18. Should have done that last year with Meyer......and NONE of the guys you listed (that have come up in the last 4 years) are half the prospects as him, they aren't good comparisons at all (well, maybe Gibson, maybe).
  19. not sure what you can get for a SP in his mid-30s, that at his peak is median or just above median. Had they signed these kinds of guys 2 and 3 years ago, then I'd like your idea a lot more......which is why, imo, you don't wait to add talent.
  20. I am being quite positive about Meyer and May......don't get how that isn't clear. I wish they had signed Santana last year, and made the bridge start earlier, and end earlier. He's a nice pitcher.....
  21. If that was his plan, why not sign Santana last year.....a much better bridge for May/Meyer/Berrios would have been created? What changed?
  22. My take: 1. I'm glad they aren't sitting back and waiting for the farm. 2. I'm glad they are attempting to add talent to the awful pitching staff. 3. I'm not in love with the signing, but I do think it helps the team. 4. I don't think it's the dollars that might hinder the team, it's that they don't really have room for Meyer and May and Berrios now.......and they just traded for Meyer and May (leaving them w/o a CF for 2-3 years now), if those guys still aren't ready to help, that's three years with no payback. 5. I hope they have the guts to pull the plug on anyone that isn't pitching well, assuming Meyer is ready at that point (or May or Milone). If they just stick with the guys (if they are bad) because they are vets making money, that will be a bummer. 6. I'll be shocked if both Nolasco and Santana are better than league median this year, hoping to be shocked.
  23. And not just through the draft.....but through all channels. Which, they seem to be doing now. Don't love all the decisions. ......but at least they are trying. Now we need to judge the outcomes.
  24. I am warming to the signing.....they are definitely not just waiting for the farm to produce.
