  1. Players don't play batting order, they play positions. Compare his offense to others at his position. That's how it works, not by batting order. No one is saying he can only be good by hitting only for power.....getting on base 39% of the time with bunches of doubles (like the old Mauer) would be great. He's not doing that either.
  2. No way I stretch him to starter this year. Let him pitch in many games against better hitters.....I like that plan much more.
  3. That's a pretty strong statement. Why do you believe that he offers no value at 1B? I still think Sano is at 1B, but I can see Kepler there, and being valuable there.
  4. long relief is a waste. They only get used when the teams have already pretty much lost. Either a starter, or a 1 inning guy, those have value.
  5. Couldn't disagree more. Players play a position, not a batting order. They should be compared to players at those positions. Pretty sure that is what every single statistic that compares players does, compares them to other players at their position. Joe isn't at 2B. Nor is he catching. He's playing 1B. Batting order could pretty much be random and not matter much.
  6. Figured I missed that part, Parker, sorry. IIRC, I recently read on Fangraphs that as players age and lose some ability, they often try to compensate by trying to pull for more power. I really hope that's not the case here, but I remain concerned.
  7. He can......not sure he will. Largely this ignores that he's also just older......and might not be as good in general. Or, I missed that while reading. I do agree, that if he has changed his approach, it isn't working, and he should go back to his old approach. But, I worry that he's just getting older and worse.......
  8. I'd move him to AAA and see what happens. I'd guess that won't happen until the half way mark....
  9. Not only can Mauer not hit......the last two games he's passed up opportunities for double plays, and has just look lost while standing in the batter's box, and watching pitches go by.
  10. Contract was not the problem, for me. The problem was not moving him off catcher to protect the investment. All my opinion, of course.....
  11. Are there pictures? And, do I really want to see them?
  12. Are we going to argue that he's actually even close to average for a 1B? Because that's really the point, he's closer to the worst 1B than the 10th best 1B on offense right now......that's a problem. If you don't agree, I'm ok with that.
  13. And if you use this link, he has a -0.1 WAR using only the offense......with only 2 qualified 1B worse. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=1b&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2015&month=0&season1=2014&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=19,d
  14. Actually, I think it is about putting an actual hitter in front of your 1-3 hitters, and acknowledging your 5-7 aren't no base much......not about the pitcher at all.
  15. You're old, wasn't sure you'd hear me otherwise btw, if you are old, I don't want to think about what I am....
  16. Turning 40 is MUCH better than the alternative of stopping to age.......
  17. he has a negative WAR on offense since the beginning of 2014, only 2 are worse......it can't get much worse really.
  18. They've already spent the 23 million......whether he plays or not. Are they willing to acknowledge that sunk costs are not how you make decisions about the future, or not? I would bet not, but I'm not going to pre-judge them on something that hasn't happened. Because in a year or so, Kepler or Vargas or Sano could be better..... Ya, Joe will never catch again.
  19. that strategy results in a TINY advantage, actually. Just wish Buxton was hitting 1.....then Mauer, then ?, then Dozier....
  20. I'd like Kepler at 1B and RF, his more likely long term positions here, than in CF, frankly. I still think he's Justin Morneau lite v2.....
