    bummer. what I liked about the Stewart pick was that it was an upside play. I prefer upside plays in the first round of the draft over risk averse "high floor" plays.

    I'm no expert....nor do I get to see these guys....but some of us have been consistent that it would take time......how is Ball doing?

    My thought is consistent: 1. I'd have liked to have seen more strikeouts, however 2. This is the year where I think we go from "he is pretty new to full time pitching and was a football player" to "well, he's been full time baseball long enough to form a meaningful impression", and, I still think that impression will be a good one. Still a fan.

    Well, I'm not proposing trading part of the immediate run for a rental......I specifically asked, when they are in the thick of being the best team in baseball.....should they, or should they not, go for it in FA or trades? They were competitive for 8 years, and won 1 series, right? They couldn't part with ANY money on a FA to DH? They couldn't part with Aaron Hicks? People here ALL THE TIME, tell me this runs in cycles....and that past 5 or so years, you are on a decline in farm system....wouldn't that be the time to trade the prospects you do have, for legit players, since those prospects WON'T be on a winning team, if you believe the cycle theory? On Kepler......if you think the core is legit now or in 2 years: How does trading Kepler make them NOT competitive for 8 years? Is he the lynch pin to buxton, Sano, Berrios, et. al. being on a winner? Really? That ONE prospect is going to make or break it?

    As for "plenty of time"....this is a young man's game, more and more, as teams decide that athleticism trumps veteraniness currently. So, he has time, but years, or whatever? Probably not to maximize his contribution and his income.

    You can care, and try, but it is a scale, right? Not an on/off switch, it is a more like a dial. How far are they willing to turn the dial to 11, instead of 6, when they have a real chance to win?

    Also, with the 2nd wild card, muddling along at 81-84 wins has REAL value now.......and with luck, you have a chance to be a playoff team and continue your luck.

    More than half the catchers better than Suzuki last year are on a team they were not on when Suzuki signed his extension (if you believe in math telling you who was better). To me, it is a great example of settling, and not going big.

    I don't know, in the last run, they never went all in to win, even though they were fated to be bad by the end of the decade (according to those that believe baseball is cyclical). Where was the ambition to be GREAT during that decade, and not have Becker and Tyner DH? Where was the ambition to close the deal on Cliff Lee? Where was the ambition to turn that group of great players into the BEST team in baseball, not a team that squeaked into the playoffs in the worst division in MLB during that time?

    And people think Seth and I don't agree......I agree with this 100%: "The inherent problem with the Twins’ spending isn’t the lack of it. It’s the systemic problem that seems to pervade the organization: complacency. The Twins have a profound lack of ambition in virtually everything they do." and especially this: "don’t get me wrong, signing Hughes or Santana or, hell, even Nolasco isn’t enough to hamstring even a team that pretends they can’t spend money, like the Twins. However, Minnesota stacked these signings on top of one another, reducing their flexibility this year to the point where there isn’t room for more than one of higher-upside" I almost feel like this isn't coming from Seth, but then, he's no more an all in apologist, than I am an all in hater* *we have both been called these things.....

    He's 30.....let's hope he's not 31/2 before he debuts. That would be unfortunate.

    I don't begrudge them making money. I want them to make money. I want the team to be successful on and off the field. But, when they are competitive, I want them to fill the holes with difference makers, who will likely cost money/prospects.

    if you aren't willing to have "dead money" basically, you have to practically admit you will never sign a free agent. Also, that you will never sign your own players to long term deals to keep them past their FA time frame. No team does that and wins. Teams build the core thru draft, trade, development, and fill the holes with free agents. *those are some terrible sentences, I hope my points are clear.

    When Tyner is your DH, a hitter. When you are flush with number 3-5 starters, a number 1/2 type. When you have a lot of 1B/DH types, not another DH...... FA should, imo, be about filling a hole or three......with big time, elite, players, occasionally.

    I'm not sure what that has to do with the point I was making........has TR ever brought in a big time FA or traded top prospects for an elite player to close the gap? Tyner DH'd one of the years they were in contention, IIRC. McPhail brought in FAs to close the holes. But, changing the topic was great for not talking about the topic......will this FO close the holes, unlike they did in the last run, or not? That, to me, will answer the question about the system, because that is what was broken in the last run.

    I think the Twins' system would work just fine, if they would sign legit FAs to fill the holes once they are contenders (or trade prospects for them). You know, like McPhail did, and Ryan didn't, before. We'll see....we'll see.
