  1. A great set up man, followed by a better catcher, followed by another good RP.....moves aren't in a vacuum. Your question seems to be: should we care they don't add one more good player, if one more good player won't help them win it all. IMO, we should care if they have good players, and are always adding more good players. Maybe in 3 years these guys will matter. In the meantime, the FO decided not to sign FA RPs, and I'm guessing we'll see 3-4 guys throw negative WAR innings, all of which Pressley could have absorbed.
  2. It isn't the money, it's the roster spot, and not gathering information on the four or five guys now behind him. And if four teams were bidding on him, his agent did a bad job getting money.
  3. Given that first base, DH, types barely get paid, and up the middle players get more and aren't out of work as much, I'd hypothesize that teams place more value, and find those players harder too replace.... Which is the point. How hard are they to replace? It's much harder to replace up the middle defenders than first basemen..... Hence, they get an adjustment in the calculation.
  4. They could use a good RP this year, on a team projected to win 82-84 games. When do they play for the present? Take their worst relievers, and replace those innings with Pressley...
  5. DFA DeJong......that lasted about as long as their Rule V pickups....
  6. Not to mention a federal legal investigation into their international practices....
  7. I guess I don't get teh fear with Gibson at 33 or so. By that argument, you never sign a FA pitcher, because that's pretty much how old they are. they literally have 1 pitcher under control past this year with any real MLB experience. And, as we see with this FO, somehow Perez is who they think is a good idea to sign. Not to mention the two Rule V guys they wasted spots on.
  8. Neither of which is close to as good as him. Which is the point. I'd like actual good players here, not affordable ones.
  9. It is a very deep system.....let's hope they have improved the development side.
  10. Of course....this all started with someone saying they can "easily" replace him FA next year if he leaves....
  11. No one claims WAR is perfect. But to say it is arbitrary is a disservice to the very smart people working on it every day. Including every front office, who have their own versions.
  12. The Dodgers have all stars at third and short. One of whom was injured last year, so they traded for Machado. It isn't about anything more than that. And cheapness, of course.
  13. Actually, outside one season where he was injured, Harper has been a decent to good fielder. But in general, I agree, he's not a difference maker on defense.
  14. That was in reply to a post about spending free agent money next year to get pitching..... If they don't sign Gibson, who are the pitchers next year?
  15. Are there better free agents available?
  16. If they don't extend or QO Gibson, who are the pitchers? It's not like they actively tried out guys last fall..... Gibson, Sano, Buxton in that order. I'd consider Rosario, but if you believe in Kirriloff and Lanarch and others....maybe not. Given I have no idea what their budget is, it is hard to say with any certainty.....
  17. Not quite right......because Garver will play about the same amount with Realmuto as Castro, so the delta is between Castro and Realmuto.....so the delta is more like 2.5 WAR. But, the real point is........they can afford to add a great player if they want to.
  18. I forgot about the option. Yes, it's better than nothing. I'm not in love that it is a DH, but it is what it is.
  19. People ignore the self fulfilling prophecy all the time. Don't add great players, then say, see, they weren't ready.... All we are asking for is using their assets on two established players. Heck, start with one. Not on a one year deal.
  20. I'd rather Garver was the main catcher, but otherwise agree with all this. Great stuff, as always.
  21. I would have done it for three years of control. I'm slightly less likely for two.... But yes, he's being criminally under rated in this thread.
  22. Whether you think they are good or not, Machado is 26 (I think), and should be very good to great for 5-10 more years. If they aren't competitive in that timeframe, it won't be because they have a great player in Machado (or Harper)...... This isn't some 30 year old we are talking about here.
