    The front office signed shoemaker and happ as starters in a year they thought they would compete. Either they can't judge pitching, or they never thought they'd compete, or they aren't going to spend what it takes.....

    You looked at international drafts, but not the data about the likelihood of early draft picks being good compared to late picks?

    People are really struggling with context of stats this year for sure....which is understandable, given what is happening. But it makes conversation here less than ideal much of the time.

    I want DeGrom regardless of the individual win stat in a team game.....I think that's the point here. But, man, it would be great if that wasn't what this thread was about....

Or, is that over rated? Kevin Goldstein 1:24 That is NOT overrated, but I don't think they should start thinking about that kind of thing until after the AS break.

    The previous post said they should consider calling up the Cuban because he was 27.... Seems that logic applies to a 26 year old whose upside is back end starter.... No place did I imply it was a negative he had not debuted yet.... As teams have learned, most pitchers don't throw harder in their late twenties, most being the key word.... If his upside is back end starter, and he's 26, maybe he should be a relief pitcher, so he can go more all out.

    Sounds like a bullpen arm to me.... Given the other starters and his age.....

    Jax will be 27 by then.....how long does anyone think he'll be good? I'll believe they might have a successful pipeline when they have even 1 guy be a good SP for at least a year. As I've said, they deserve until the end of this year to be judged as a FO.....so we'll start seeing this year, I guess, how I feel.

    The Rays are the least foolish team in sports when it comes to evaluation and trades. Cheap ? Yes. Foolish? No.

    Do you think they'll sign Berrios AND another high priced starter? This year they signed Happ and Shoemaker......two number 5 types, in a year they were supposed to compete. I'd love it if they did, but I have strong doubts.

    Berrios is only here two more years.....by the logic of your first paragraph, they are looking at a full on rebuild after 2022, if I read that correctly, anyway. Why not start with more assets? If a team wants a very good pitcher now, not in 2 years, he's more valuable to that team than someone that will be ready in 2 years. That said, I'm sympathetic to waiting until the middle of next year....which given their ability to develop pitchers, and willingness to spend real money on them, doesn't look all that promising either....

    Even with Berrios, then, who is pitching next year? I think everyone here knows this pipeline isn't ideal.....everyone.

    This isn't really "their" core though, so I think they could survive it. But, it surely is a consideration.
