    Nice win! This team can flat out hit. Baserunning for Dum Dums! Pinch runner comes in and completely loses his mind lol. I do agree that was definitely the difference in the game. Someone could go look at win expectancy and compare "tie game, top of eighth" to what it should have been, first and third one out, bottom of seventh. Another fun fact - Remember that so-called "4th out" play from last week between Pittsburgh and Washington? (link) Well two big IFs: I think IF there had been one out instead of zero outs, and IF Engel had for some reason kept running and crossed home, he would have gotten there before Urshela tagged the trail runner and the run would have counted - the same situation as that other play. I think. But don't quote me. Just a fun observation. Let's see how the White Sox respond and if the Twins can tease out a good plan for how to pitch to them tonight. The White Sox seem like a team that will hang their heads. Meanwhile, another strength for this Twins team is its rebounding and resilience. If the Twins had run into this triple play, I really think they would just put it behind them and move on.

    Excellent points, and maybe I need to do a better job keeping up with the game recaps. Haranguing the manager is a time-honored baseball tradition but yeah I can see how people take it way too far in this day and age.

    I’m pretty sure I said the offense was to blame. These are scenarios that many of us fans play in our heads, in real time, as it’s happening. It is not ridiculous at all to question why the Twins didn’t bunt in that inning. I am not manufacturing anything. Why do you assume I am? Why do you assume we are?

    A lot of posters are rallying to the defense of Rocco and rightly pointing out the lack of offense last night, but I gotta side with @Nashvilletwin and @Mark G and others this time, I think Rocco miscalculated on a chance to manufacture a run in the 8th after the Jeffers lead off walk. Dan Gladden pointed it out about the same time I started thinking it. In short, pinch run Buxton and ask Celestino to bunt. Or to take it one further— my preference— ask Celestino to bunt, and if the sacrifice is successful and Jeffers makes it to second with one out, then that’s when you insert Buxton as a pinch runner. If Buxton is healthy enough to pinch hit, and presumably leg out a double, then I assume he is healthy enough to run the bases for an inning or score from second on a single. I actually didn’t see the Arraez fly ball if it would have been deep enough to get Buxton to third with two outs. Rocco seemed better with Shelton as his wingman. It’s little opportunities like this that have been missed since then. I’m sure Rocco is doing fine and executing the plan in other ways besides game situations. And In no way was this the overriding reason the Twins lost last night.

    Well he’s probably not unhappy anymore (performance notwithstanding), but after the trade, yeah, he was absolutely shattered. By the way, I’d guess he is tipping pitches, and he knows he is, but is having trouble getting his grips and deliveries straightened back out. In other words, probably just a really bad stretch for him. Thanks for your support!

    Not to single out any particular Twins Daily writer, but there always feels to me to be a “finger to the wind” aspect to these articles. Since Berrios was my favorite player, I will pose these questions: Is it really worth wondering what happened to Berrios? Are we really not sure about him? Do we really not think he’ll be just fine and pitching in the postseason? Can we name the Twins top three pitchers for a postseason series? Maybe we should be asking what happened to the two we traded for? A position player starting to profile as a light-hitting corner outfielder, and a starting pitcher with promise but who vanishes for long periods? thanks for listening!

    And the other throw-in piece that I liked, Calvin Faucher, was fast-tracked to the majors by Tampa Bay and they are giving him bigger spots to pitch in, though he is not one of their top bullpen arms.

    I appreciate the first hand accounts from @RochesterDave and @ashbury - thanks! Nice commentary as usual, Matt. Indeed, Gordon was a nice trade piece back in the the 2016-2019 years. Gordon was also not the first middle infielder to be called up in early 2021 (Blankenhorn who threw that ball away in Oakland and at least one other name we have all forgotten already) were called to the big leagues ahead of Gordon. But this is 2022 and Gordon can continue to be a nice player off the bench or to spot start for this team.

    I remember last summer saying that I wanted to see Calvin Faucher promoted to MLB, give some unheralded guys like Faucher a look for 2022, since the bullpen was so bad last year and I figured they would move on from a bunch of guys. As it turns out, Tampa Bay got Faucher in the Cruz deal and now he is on the 26-man roster tonight for the Rays! Not saying this guy is going to light the world on fire, but still, nice to know I wasn't completely insane at the time.

    I’m not taking a side on this, and don’t know how Buxton reaggravated his knee, but according to the article it’s a lingering issue from last season? As mentioned by @Rosterman and @Chachi — Buxton’s performance incentives — my understanding is that they don’t kick in until next season. With this new load management program, if this is how it’s going to be going forward, I have to wonder if Buxton will have trouble reaching even the lowest bonus step of 502 PA even when he’s healthy for a full season, which puts serious MVP considerations (his other pay incentive) pretty much out of reach, which means… I have no idea what any of this means. We need him on the field, for sure.

    It seems a little contradictory given that Woods-Richarson’s stats are not too bad, but as part of any future deal he would be an over-traded prospect at that point. (Drafted by Mets, traded to Jays, traded to Twins, traded to next team.) So unless there is a team or scout out there still in love with him from his amateur days, I would think his status as being traded multiple times would raise questions on a negotiation call.

    Berrios will be fine. Another way to frame it is I think Toronto still does that trade 10 times out of 10, with the talent they have the next few years, and their window. Exactly the kind of trade the Twins would benefit from, in my opinion. It’s just too bad for Toronto that the Yankees are off to such a a torrid start this season.

    Duran came in the 6th to face the top of the Detroit order. For those scoring at home, that means the top of the Detroit order would have also come up in the 9th (or 8th). So while there’s an argument to be made for using Duran while the game is close, there’s also the argument for saving Duran again for the higher leverage innings at the end. A one-run lead in the 8th is higher leverage than a one-run lead in the sixth. But anyway. Let’s all throw our support behind Chai Chai Gonzo-LAY (WKRP reference) getting the start tomorrow in Toronto. go Twins!

    How far can they go? Two playoff games plus three quarters of the third game, is about all, unfortunately. I feel bad for you all who are diehard Wolves fans. You don’t deserve the same crap that Vikings and Twins fans endure year after year.

    Also, I guess I was looking forward to Alex Meyer and José Berríos off the top of my head but yeah the pitching pipeline has been extremely thin the past 10 or 5 years if that’s what you mean by most exciting in history.

    I love Sano but my epiphany on him came a few years ago, in a plate appearance against Chris Archer in fact. All of us had already seen the same streaky Sano by that time, either locked in or zoned out. Sano was in one of his slumps, and Archer worked him to 1-2, then 2-2. Then I thought “yup, here comes the high outside fastball waste pitch, followed by slider low and away on 3-2, for swing and a miss,” and... that’s what happened. I’ve only seen one game so far this season but I assume Sano still hasn’t changed much, otherwise this thread wouldn’t be here. I think Sano is fine, there’s nothing really “wrong” with him, but he just doesn’t see the pitch out of the pitcher’s hand as well as the average MLB-er. So it takes Sano that extra moment to recognize the spin, get his body in motion, and by that time, it’s too late. So, knowing all of this, he makes up his mind to swing a tiny bit earlier than he should (also accounting for all the check swings we have seen over the years). Anyway that’s just one idea.

    Just to fill in more context: Duran threw 115 innings in 2019 as a minor league starter (about 5 innings per start), he threw an unknown number of simulated innings in 2020, and was down to only 16 innings at triple A in 2021. Have the Twins announced an innings limit for Duran for 2022? Seems like there will be one, granted, not all innings are alike. Is 50 to 70 a good guess? That’s a light but okay number of innings for a typical big league reliever over a full season. As a starter, 50-70 innings won’t get you to the All Star break unless the starts were very short. The big league bullpen seems like the right place for Duran. I don’t see the point of shipping Duran to AAA right away.
