  1. Oh ok , I think this is in response to people who say the front office makes all the calls about the game in advance. Yeah I don’t agree with that, it has to be Baldelli. Thanks.
  2. I guess I read Tingler’s remarks at 9:30 as: the front office generates reams of data, and then leaves it for Rocco to sort out and make the calls. What am I missing?
  3. Likewise, it is refreshing to hear someone simply call it a “good pitching staff” and leave it at that, without all the extra stuff.
  4. See, that’s what I wondered about Royce Lewis when Lewis went back into the field for Game 3 and made those terrible swings, but I was told ‘No’ that Lewis’s legs were fine. I could only follow that game online at work anyway. I will assume Baldelli and coaches watched Buxton swing prior to putting him into Game 4, but that their observation tools or their ‘eye test’ to evaluate his swings and judge him fit for game duty failed them. For his preparation, I wonder if Buxton faced live throwers throwing all out, or just BP throwers, or the even just the pitching machine. There is so much to dig into here, so many questions. If people aren’t curious about this kind of stuff, it’s going to manifest again somehow, and will preclude the Twins from making better decisions or getting any better on the field, or beating a solid team like Houston in the postseason and going any further. Thank you for your contributions to this site!
  5. First base is not the worst idea. However, Buxton needs to want that, and unfortunately no one really knows what Buxton wants except Buxton, and probably not even him. But since he had this new procedure we can wait until he is cleared from that, and give him the offseason to think about it and heal. I also think Julien is an internal candidate for first base worth trying out.
  6. “Best Twins team in 30 years” be better, TD I would put the 2017 and 2019 teams as better or more cohesive, having a better chance at a long postseason run (yeah I know those teams did not advance, don’t bother) So, I think this was more like the 3rd best team in this front office’s 7-year tenure. One thing this 2023 team had was a 1-2 punch in the starting rotation. I will give them that. Lopez won me over in the end. As far as the everyday lineup, I cannot rate the 2023 team in the top ten of the last 30 years. I would rate most of the lineups of the 2000s decade as better. I liked the Eddie Rosario lineups of 2017 and 2019. The 2015 team was young and exciting. The early 90s lineups were still halfway competitive for a few years after ‘91. The 2023 team was more like the 10th to 15th best team of the past 30 years, in my opinion. The one thing the 2023 team did was rekindle those winning feelings in the postseason, which does count for something.
  7. Why, because Christian Vazquez snuck into the photo there on the left? 🤣
  8. Those teams also have recent World Series victories in their back pockets. I know the point is not to put down those great teams, but more to highlight the sometimes arbitrary nature of which teams survive and advance. The margins are indeed thin in the postseason. The Dodgers, Philly, and Atlanta are still the class of the NL and only one can make it to the finish. Houston is clearly the class of the American League, and I expect the Yankees to return to prominence next year again too. The Twins should be competitive again as well.
  9. Adding Buxton to the roster after Kirilloff’s injury was the wrong call. The right call would have been to add Gallo. As it was, Solano was left as the only player who could play first base. Also, Rocco gave in to the temptation to put Buxton into a game before he was ready, and that was a tough spot. I would have left Taylor in. Pinch hitting for Taylor meant the outfield defense was downgraded the next inning. Wallner would have been a better pinch hit option, or in that situation, maybe even Gallo.
  10. The Buxton at bat was a feel good moment, for sure. Abreu threw Buxton three fastballs. When the Houston pitching coach went out there, it was to talk about Buxton. Buxton obviously had not been part of Houston’s game planning at all to that point in the series. It sure seems like the advice to Abreu and Maldonado was to just throw heat and stay around the edges. Not to get fancy and risk hanging an off speed pitch Buxton might be able to get around on.
  11. it’s not really outrage, though. I’m not sure what the right word is. it’s almost like they were going for the Disney movie ending or something. Hat/Tip to Kris Atteberry after the game for the Disney reference. I’m coming up with a bunch of football metaphors. I already mentioned pinch hitting Buxton there as a Hail Mary pass when a Hail Mary was not needed. They just needed to keep the drive going. Here’s another one: the Buxton at bat last night was kind of like the Joe Webb playoff appearance against the Packers. Fans were cautiously optimistic, and everything looked good on that first drive, Webb marching them down the field on running plays, until it got to third down and Webb actually had to throw a pass. (Spoiler: the pass was terrible). In other words. Everything about the Buxton at bat last night felt really good, until Buxton actually had to swing the bat. Which he was in no shape to do against that level of competition in that moment.
  12. Sure, but Rocco should really be focusing on baseball moves at that point. Sending Buxton up to bat was the equivalent of a Hail Mary pass, when all that was needed was just one run, or even just a baserunner. Buxton would have been better used as a pinch runner at some point, in that sense. Leaving Taylor to bat would have been a much better option. Only Kepler hit more home runs than Taylor this season. Or if this was all about removing Taylor, then use Wallner as the pinch hitter. I really hope there is room for disagreement about this!
  13. It’s gotta hurt if you are Taylor there, a veteran center fielder who played his guts out for you all season, and at least had half a chance to run into one and go yard. It felt like Buxton was a 100-1 shot to do anything there, like you said.
  14. A pretty good game, despite the result. Pulling Joe Ryan was probably the right move. But as someone said, if that’s the amount of confidence you have in your #3 guy, you are in a tough spot. Jax got outs and didn’t seem overwhelmed by the moment. Thielbar not so much. I’m not sure what the Buxton thing was all about. The crowd was already amped up enough, didn’t need an out there. Maybe someone who was at the game will chime in. The bottom half of the order unfortunately did not show up at all. But overall, a very good game. The better team won. The Twins have a long way to go to get to Houston’s level.
