  1. Arcia! Now has three runs to his credit to give back in the outfield.
  2. Pinto hurt - anybody heard? Or maybe just given his unconditional release?
  3. Well, Quintana is at 103 pitches, so we know he automatically by rule needs to be removed from the game..
  4. Middle of sixth inning: Quintana 11 K's, Hughes 9 K's.
  5. Geez, what's the record for K's in a game? Kerry Wood - 20? Will Hughesie knock that record down today?
  6. Nice write up. Can't resist adding my 2 cents: 1. Concussion, proud papa, position change, a lot going on this offseason. Joe should rebound. 2. I don't know why but I am comfortable with Schafer as LF for 2015. 3. Starting Pitching? No comment. 4. Home field advantage will return when the team starts winning. 5. Fundamentals. Coaching. Somebody in the organization, probably Ryan, saw that a guy like Molitor (a HOF infielder) could come in and work regularly with Dozier and Plouffe, and both those guys are completing very good seasons. Maybe Ryan or Molitor can in turn identify a potential outfield coach who might come in and work with Hicks, Santana, Arcia, and others. Not to mention the dire need (imo) for an additional Latin American presence.
  7. Danny Santana, Games started by POS, since September call ups (9/2) (through game 1 doubleheader): CF: 5 SS: 2 did not start: 3 I guess what I take from this is 1. the Twins are happy with Escobar at SS and Santana in CF (I can't complain about that); and 2. Hicks does not have a future on a Gardy-managed team. If Santana continues to get the bulk of the time in CF, I'd assume the Twins will lean towards using him as a stop gap in CF until Buxton comes up.
  8. Like TD poster LaBombo said in another thread somewhere (I am paraphrasing), the burden of proof really needs to fall on the "keep Gardy" people this time around.. And we're talking something real compelling. No more "because prospects" or that Ryan "takes full responsibility" for the horrible players the Twins have. (which by the way is patently false, in my opinion)
  9. I also like Schafer in left and batting ninth and can't exactly explain why. What Willihammer said makes sense -- I think the talk of Mauer playing in the outfield has less to do with Mauer playing in the outfield, than it has to do with breaking the potential logjam of 1B/DH types next year. Mauer, Vargas, Sano/Plouffe, Pinto maybe, Arcia according to some,...
  10. Something always smelled funny to me about contraction. Especially coming right after it was believed (by me anyway) that the threat that the Twins were moving to North Carolina was mostly staged. Selig ushered in many improvements to the play, but the NFL instant replay model is really a stinker so far.
  11. glunn made a strong point. Many times, hard work and repetition will help. It did help in Plouffe's case. The PP ran a short article on Plouffe's improved defense this year. I encourage anyone -- including Twins ownership and management -- to take a look. http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_26509192/twins-trevor-plouffe-seeks-gold-improved-play-field
  12. In order to defend your desire that Gardenhire remain manager and Anderson remain pitching coach, you have just claimed that the Twins didn't have any good starting pitching from say, oh, 2004 to 2006.
  13. A small leap of logic which I apparently tripped over. My bad. Nick cites the brawl as a positive example of Douggie's passion, you agree with Nick that Mientkiewicz would be a good choice for manager, which therefore means that you believe all baseball managers must instigate brawls and mass chaos on the field. In truth, I think Douggie's resume is pretty compelling - all the championships you cited, plus the success in Fort Myers. I'd like to see him interviewed for the Twins job but then turned down, if only to give him practice handling it. The brawl seems to be part of a pattern. It would be really odd to suddenly reward that behavior with a big promotion. Let him continue to build on his success in Fort Myers and revisit the matter down the road. Also I just think another fiery personality as manager is counter productive going forward.
  14. And by the look of the left field bleachers, apparently more people will see this Andy Wilkins factoid here on Twins Daily (and Twitter) than at the Cell last night. McDonald's, Pepsi, and Miller Lite extend their thanks to you.
  15. Did you see Tim Tebow's new breakfast regimen? It's INSANE!!!
  16. Unfortunately it does get celebrated, especially when no one gets hurt. In reality I think buffoonish incidents are always going to happen but are not always black and white. Which of these on field "assaults" were bad for the game, and which made the game richer? - Mientkiewicz charging opposing manager - Hrbek pulling Gant off the bag - Pine Tar incident-Brett charging out at umpire - Pedro Martinez striking Don Zimmer - Robin Ventura charging Nolan Ryan - I can't deny it, in hindsight I am glad this one happened
  17. Just a quick point: I don't think gunnarthor or I or anyone is saying situations like Ray Rice is good for sports, or bad brawls like Gophers-Ohio St., or bad fans who bait bad characters guys like Ron Artest into jumping into the stands, and so on.
  18. Why other teams haven't come knocking: Obviously I wouldn't know if they have or haven't. My recollection from 2001 was that either Gardy or Molitor would be hired, and Molitor voluntarily withdrew his name as a candidate so as to have more family and personal time for himself. Thereafter, he enjoyed the work of being a roving instructor. That's how I've read it. He's kind of put all his eggs in one basket, though, and that's his own fault. This continuing idea that Molitor might not be capable of managing a baseball team is just weird. The same could be said for Gardenhire or Meintkiewicz or whoever you want. Molitor is a smart guy. I'm not wedded to Molitor as the choice anymore. But I think he has a greater variety of experience in baseball than any of the other candidates, certainly more than Steinbach, and vastly more prepared for the job than Mientkiewicz, with all of that guy's red flags and inability to hold a job in baseball except for when he's with the Twins organization. This idea that Molitor is out of his element will get huge pushback from me.
  19. Gardy is able to manage his bullpen well because the Twins typically are carrying an extra bullpen arm. At times he used the extra arm to the Twins advantage but at other times it was an absolute liability, like in early May when we ran out of outfielders.
  20. I disagree with Nick and jokin's idea that the brawl somehow shakes out in Mientkiewicz's favor. If not fired, then probably assigned a one-way ticket to managing permanently in Fort Myers. I do agree with you gunnarthor that it is good for the game though. Sports is controlled aggression anyway and forms the basis for great stories. I just think it's better when it's other people doing the crazy ugly stuff and not our guys (this opinion brought to you from a lifelong Minnesotan).
  21. Mientkiewicz has all these qualities, but essentially all the current farm managers do. Jake Mauer, Jeff Smith, Gene Glynn, as well as Molitor. I'm not sure the Twins operate in a way to promote a guy ahead of most of those names.
  22. Even in a story advocating for Mientkiewicz, you can't come up with a single reason Molitor might be qualified to be the next manager?
  23. Well said LaBombo. I can chalk up Nick's reply to tobi as hasty typing in service of hasty thoughts. There are many reasons to retain Gardenhire and Anderson, but very few good ones anymore. On these boards we've read maybe a dozen different, fundamental, compelling reasons to part ways with them. (Compelling to me anyway.) If the status quo is maintained yet another year, let's hear something in that pathetic press conference other than "terrible players" and "Terry Ryan takes all responsibility" for everything!
  24. What if Gardenhire and Anderson really are the biggest obstacle to this team winning? How will we ever know if we don't try someone else?
