    I am getting skeptical that “70% of pitchers” are cheating with some new foreign substance. Maybe it’s true? But I’m a skeptic as of now. Unscientific, but I have looked up the records of couple dozen pitchers now the past couple days, and though I am not counting, I’d estimate less than half have seen increases in their spin rates, and even less than that where I wonder if it might be attributed to something other than a typical variation, new baseball, new grip, whatever. Kyle Gibson is clean, for example. I forced myself to search Twin pitchers like Pineda and Berrios and eeeeek..... they are clean as well. no doubt to be continued...

    Interesting video. I wish there had been an explanation of how using foreign substances increases spin rates, or why increased spin rates makes baseballs harder to hit. Much of the b-roll in the video is from past seasons. If the video creator has been immersed in the issue as closely as he suggests, he might have dropped in the clip of the ball sticking to Yadier Molina’s chest protector. I don’t like the clip of Ohtani as if Ohtani is part of the conspiracy. Ohtani’s spin rates have increased, but not so much that it couldn’t be attributed to the manufacture of the 2021 baseball itself (for example, raised laces). Same with deGrom, in my opinion, by the way. I do recall in 2019 that pitchers said they couldn’t grip the baseballs. Maybe the foreign substance talk this season is a reaction to how baseballs were made that season. Like someone said, baseball cannot seem to get out of its own way. People can click here to go to Baseball Savant and do their own investigation. Start by searching a player’s name, then on the player’s page scroll halfway down to the Pitch Tracking section, then click on More Seasons. Spin is one of the last columns. It’s really nice that MLB makes this information publicly available.

    It could even be someone who hasn’t been called up yet! Okay, enough snark. A couple weeks ago, I would have put Kirilloff and Pineda on this list, as well. Sometimes there is some horse-trading, depending on who the managers are. I’m not sure the Twins would want to send Kirilloff. Who knows.

    The Twins were competitive in 2015 and 2017, yet somehow between them in 2016 they lost 100 games due to some shaky assumptions. I’d clean up the assumptions, make a strategic trade or two at the deadline, look at some new off-field personnel, and retool for 2022. Get pitching.

    That’s the catch. Sano can get on a couple of nice streaks during the season, but during the post-season, when pitchers are better and more focused on batter weaknesses, Sano becomes a liability.
