Wow. Terry Ryan's done with all of his shopping before Christmas and they're right around last year's budget. Usually he's waiting for the post-Christmas sales.
Players that haven't been mentioned elsewhere Danny Santana - the Twins coaching staff likes his game. He finally drew some walks last year. Alex Meyer - I think he's in the big leagues by June Adrian Salcedo - could move quickly as a reliever Zach Jones - just keeps striking guys out
I hope the Twins continue looking for promising bullpen pitchers even though the bullpen seems to be in decent shape. I think the Twins should be as interested in Stephen Drew as they apparently are in Saltalamacchia.
Pierzynski's bat plays better at Fenway than in MN. I love that the Red Sox are bowing out on Saltalamacchia. If the Twins don't get Saltalamacchia then I like John Buck.
Dioner Navarro could provide what most of what they're looking for from Saltalamacchia (LH bat, decent catcher) at a fraction of the cost. It will be interesting to see what happens.
An average defensive catcher is needed because Doumit and Pinto are both below average. Good catchers make pitchers better so you can think of some of the $$ as going to upgrade the pitching staff.
No. I expect Mauer to have more value than Fielder at 1B in 2014 and going forward. Fielder is an AWFUL first baseman but I expect Mauer to compete for the gold glove.
The Twins have two more option years on Colabello and should use those options to stash him in AAA as a backup in case of injury. I'm not worried about David Ortiz redux. Worst case scenario is Colabello doesn't get his shot to be another Garrett Jones. I don't like signing AJ Pierzysnki because he is not a good defender behind the plate anymore. I want to see them sign a catcher with a good glove to help the pitchers prevent runs.
There is a tendency on lists like these for the draft hype to influence the rankings and bump drafted players ahead of international signings. I think Seth has done a good job making sure it isn't just hype that drives the rankings. So far I think I'd just flip Wimmers and Turner and call it good.
