    There is a tendency on lists like these for the draft hype to influence the rankings and bump drafted players ahead of international signings. I think Seth has done a good job making sure it isn't just hype that drives the rankings. So far I think I'd just flip Wimmers and Turner and call it good.

    Why Phil Hughes? Because AJ Burnett. Not only is Yankee Stadium generous giving up the HR but their defense is also not good.

    Mauer was injured in 2011 so it should be expected that he's below average. He was lousy in 2012, recognized it and improved. He probably has 2 more seasons max as an above-average defensive catcher just due to his age. I think his defensive decline will push him to 1B eventually and I expect him to be above average at 1B after he moves. He is an outstanding athlete. My guess is 2014-2015 are "transition" years where he only catches 80-100 games and he doesn't catch much after 2015. Ted Simmons caught 50 games past age 33. Joe Torre moved at age 30 but he was not a good defender. Yogi Berra was done catching full-time after age 34. Bench was done catching at age 32. Eventually Mauer will move to 1B and commenters can all say "I told you so".

    "What is better, Mauer at first and pinto at catcher, or Mauer catching and random guy from the system playing first?" Mauer catching and a random guy from the system playing 1B is the right answer. Mauer is by far the best defender they can put behind the plate. Colabello has outhit Pinto on the same minor league teams. I can't stress this one enough - Mauer is the only good defensive catcher on the roster. Moving him to 1B would be a huge minus for team defense. Mauer could probably be equivalent to John Olerud at 1B but they win more games with him behind the plate at this time. If they go out and get a free agent catcher like John Buck then moving Mauer to 1B makes a lot more sense.

    Melotakis hasn't been a bad starter. He's moving up the ladder as a starting pitcher and I assume that will continue until he isn't performing well. If he gets to AA and they decide to convert him back to relief he'll move quickly. Getting him innings speeds his development, it doesn't slow it down.

    The catcher, like any other infielder, should be allowed to block the base only if he has the ball or must go into the baseline to field the ball. Likewise the runner, like at any other base, should be called out for interference if he tries to knock the ball out of the catcher's glove. There is no reason to have different rules at home plate. The current rules lead to increased injury risk for the catcher AND the baserunner. Those rules have already been changed at lower levels (NCAA since 2002) to prevent injury. This is how Rule 7.06( reads currently "The catcher, without the ball in his possession, has no right to block the pathway of the runner attempting to score. The base line belongs to the runner and the catcher should be there only when he is fielding a ball or when he already has the ball in his hand." Seems clear to me. Runners should be called safe if the catcher is obstructing. The only thing required is to clarify that running over the catcher is interference just like it is at any other base. I think running over the catcher should mean other baserunners can be called out as well because the runner is preventing the catcher from making a play on those runners.

    Santana was only in the bullpen because they had to keep him on the 25 man roster. Until Melotakis has to go on the 40 man roster they should keep trying him as a starting pitcher. There is really no downside - he gets to see more batters and work more on his secondary pitches as a starter. Minor league relievers don't get much more than 60 innings a year. My guess is they'll make the decision when he reaches AA.

    Pedro Florimon speaks fluent Spanish. Pretty much all the Latino players do.

    They can pick up the phone and call him.... Seriously though, the other players can translate in-game. He's most needed during practice and in the clubhouse.

    Bobby Cuellar is of Mexican descent and speaks Spanish. I agree that Latino coaches are underrepresented when compared to Latino players but the Twins aren't completely ignoring it.

    I like Stuart Turner better than these guys. Catchers who can defend make it to the big leagues even if they hit .200.

    Look at who was picked between Levi Michael and Travis Harrison in that draft. Only Jackie Bradley looks like a big leaguer. If it makes you feel better think of Harrison as the 1st rounder that season.

    That lowers the risk to the ballclub but I don't see how it improves the return. The return is based on what another team is willing to pay, not what the Twins have on their roster for talent. If a team is convinced that Brian Dozier can be their long-term answer at 2B they will find him more desirable now when they get him for a longer period of time.

    Trading second basemen for starting pitchers almost always works out for the team getting the pitcher. Second basemen are nearly as fungible as relief pitchers.

    Whichever Cardinals executive negotiated that they qualify for a competitive balance draft pick was a genius.

    People get on Levi Michael as a "wasted" first round pick but they were picking 30th. Who was picked between Michael and Travis Harrison that looked better at the time? Even with perfect hindsight only Jackie Bradley stands out.

    Pelfrey signed a one year deal AFTER his surgery. That's a lot different than giving a 24 year old a 6 year contract.

    The time value of money says you are better off paying the $20M five years from now instead of up-front.

    "The Twins had the 5th highest operating costs this year." How much of that is paying for Target Field? They can't cut back on debt service.

    I think the top 3 teams posting all get to negotiate with Tanaka. I may be wrong about details but I don't think they're using the previous posting system.

    Drafting low is part of it. If you draft in the 20s you're missing out on the top talent every year.

    This is a problem. Many, many talented professional athletes have large egos. If he can't handle players with a big ego then he's in the wrong line of work.
