  1. This is a problem. Many, many talented professional athletes have large egos. If he can't handle players with a big ego then he's in the wrong line of work.
  2. Slim left last week. I'm not sure Trevor Hoffmann will get elected.
  3. There are two things a third baseman has to do that a first baseman doesn't have to do. 1) Make long throws across the diamond. I am 100% certain Mauer can do that. 2) Charge bunts. That is an open question but Mauer can probably do it as well as A-Rod or Cabrera.
  4. If even a neurologist can't convince you then you're stubbornly ignoring medical evidence. What Mauer wants IS important. He's not an infant who needs to be protected from harm. He's an adult who can determine if he's willing to take a risk.
  5. "Much, much, much less chance for concussions" Not true. Based on this year's concussion DL numbers a catcher is 10x more likely to get a concussion. That is not much, much, much more.
  6. How many times does getting hit by a foul tip result in a concussion? How many times does getting hit in the head by an errant throw when you're not wearing a helmet and face mask cause a concussion? We're dealing with really small numbers here which is why we need actual data to make a good decision. Suppose playing catcher doubles his concussion risk versus playing 1B. That means moving him to 1B decreases his risk he gets a concussion in 2014 from very unlikely to very, very unlikely. I don't see "long term health concerns" as a legitimate reason to move him from C to 1B. If that was a real worry the only way to mitigate it is to quit playing baseball. If we're looking at overall injury risk to a C versus 1B I think that is legitimate because you want Mauer on the field instead of on the DL but it has nothing at all to do with concussions.
  7. "May increase risk." Not "Increases risk by a factor of 100." If he gets one concussion every 10+ years the odds are really low he gets another next season. Moving him from C to 1B only decreases those odds slightly because his concussion risk does not come just from playing C. He's not going to stop "participating in a high risk sport". Alexi Casilla and Wilkin Ramirez had concussions playing the field this year and they don't play catcher. Does anyone have actual data on the rate of concussions for catchers versus other positions? It is critical to have data to make a risk-based decision. Humans are notoriously awful at estimating risk.
  8. By that logic anyone who has a concussion should quit playing baseball because they're putting their family at risk. Baseball is a game that has inherent injury risks. Playing 1B doesn't keep him from getting beaned at the plate or hit by an errant throw during practice.
  9. This article doesn't change my mind that Mauer should stay at catcher for a number of reasons. I'll list them in descending order of importance. 1) He's had one concussion in 10 years behind the plate. At that rate he's unlikely to have another one. He's at risk for a concussion batting and running the bases and he isn't going to stop doing either one of them. There are things they can do to mitigate his concussion risk while catching. 2) He's their best defensive option at catcher. Until that is no longer the case I can't support moving him from behind the plate. The team has a better chance of winning ballgames with him catching. 3) He doesn't want to move and it gives Mauer his best chance at making individual accomplishments the longer they leave him there. 4) If they move him from behind the plate now he might not make the 2014 ASG at Target Field. I fully support using Mauer more at 1B and DH but his primary position should be catcher as long as it helps the team win.
  10. "you don't want to block any of these guys, which means getting 3 pitchers in FA wouldn't be very wise" There are 5 open spots in the rotation and you need 6 guys minimum to get through a season. Getting 3 pitchers in free agency wouldn't block anyone.
  11. 113 games for a catcher versus 145 for a second baseman doesn't seem like that big of a gap to me.
  12. Better comps for Liam Hendriks - Todd Ritchie and Mike Lincoln. He may give some team 300 decent innings but he's very unlikely to be someone they kick themselves over.
  13. I think Arcia forced his way to the big leagues. He raked in AAA which kept giving him chances to show it in the majors. He's going to be good. You really didn't need hindsight to determine #1 and #3. Going with a rookie who has never been above AAA was a big risk and there was no backup plan despite several CF available cheaply (ex. Nyjer Morgan is in Japan). #3 was obvious to anyone looking at the opening day roster. So many pitchers were coming off of surgery. I didn't expect Worley to flame out but some pitcher always does and they should have anticipated that with all the medical issues of this pitching staff.
  14. Trading a top prospect for an established pitcher would make sense if the Twins were a .500 ballclub and ready to compete next season. They aren't. They can't afford to give up more talent than they get. They aren't close enough to the playoffs for it to make sense.
  15. Not the guy I'd be looking to deal. There are other prospects who probably should be traded before their stock falls - Max Kepler and Travis Harrison come to mind - but the Twins have little depth in the middle infield.
  16. The Trout versus Cabrera MVP debate is interesting playing out in the media. After watching the Twins recent play it is almost unfathomable that I could be watching the equivalent of Trout and Cabrera play for the Twins as soon as next season.
  17. Why will they spend more money? Because they make more in the long term when they win than when they lose.
  18. Interesting that we would be loving Colabello if we hadn't seen him up until now.
  19. I'd welcome a return of Scott Baker now that he's healthy. I'm also interested in Lincecum, Hughes, Haren, Josh Johnson and Jason Hammel. There are some low wattage lefties that might have a season left. Chris Capuano, Barry Zito, Scott Feldman, Scott Kazmir, Paul Maholm, Joe Saunders and Wandy Rodriguez if he gets bought out. Target Field is built for lefties. How much is Jorge De La Rosa going to get paid? I see a lot more options this offseason than last. They should have about $100M of room in the budget if they really spent 52% of revenue and weren't just stockpiling money for the Pohlad's tax bill.
  20. A "corner utility" player can be pretty valuable to have on the bench. Look at the career of Eric Hinske for example. The Twins did well with Michael Cuddyer sliding to whichever position was needed that week. I still wonder what Casey Blake could have done for the team. It would be great if Plouffe could fill in where needed at the corners. As a starter you're looking to replace him but he's a fair sight better than what a team can typically call up from AAA.
  21. Not enough bat for that glove, not enough glove for that bat. He's a tweener who only has value at 3B and even then it isn't much. However, if Danny Valencia can find a bench role in the big leagues then so can Plouffe. When Sano finally displaces him he can platoon in the OF with Arcia, Presley and Parmelee. Do the Twins like him as the RH bench bat better than Colabello or Wilkin Ramirez?
  22. Should keep Bill Smith busy for a while
  23. Go with upside. Josh Johnson, Dan Haren, Phil Hughes and Scott Baker. I think the guys currently in the rotation showed they aren't playoff caliber pitchers.
  24. If they don't sign at least one decent pitcher this offseason they're fooling themselves. That starting rotation screams 100 losses. How about this? Josh Johnson Dan Haren Kevin Correia Scott Diamond Kyle Gibson Deduno, Meyer, Worley and May in AAA.
