As excellent of a choice as Alan Trammell was for the Tigers, although Trammell had more previous coaching experience. Trammell's teams won 38% of their games. After leading his first team to a 43-119 record he did get them back up above 70 wins the next two seasons. When they fired Trammell and brought in Jim Leyland, they went to the World Series the following season. The supporting argument for "Torii Hunter is the perfect manager for the Twins" seems to be "because I'm a fan of Torii Hunter". Maybe he's the perfect manager because it won't be his reputation that is tarnished if the rebuild fails. Falvey will get fired and everyone will still like Torii.

He would be a great addition. I think the Twins will get outbid but they could end up with the current 1B from the team that signs him. If the Red Sox add Murakami they will trade Casas.

Arraez has about 3500 career plate appearances of not creating RBI despite the highest batting average of any active player. He only had 69 RBI in his best season when he hit .354 with 203 hits. You really think he'd drive in 80 runs if he's added to the Twins lineup? He'd hit .290 with 50-60 runs scored and 45-55 RBI. He would do that while giving you below average defense at first base and no speed. If that's what you want, then I would recommend you convert Larnach to 1B and save some money. I am going to guess Arraez gets a contract of 2-3 years at $8M per season. The Twins shouldn't try to win that bidding war. The Twins need to add athletes, they have enough mediocre DH.

The Yankees would choose neither. Arraez had 2 singles in 12 PA in the 2025 playoffs with 0 runs scored and 0 RBI. His career playoff OPS is .530. Arraez had nearly 300 more plate appearances than Wallner and one additional XBH. Arraez averages 59 RBI per 162 games. Wallner averages 76 RBI per 162 games.

I think he's more of a dead horse than a dark horse.
-
Assuming they keep Sands, Funderburk and Topa that leaves five spots wide open for young pitchers with upside. If they had kept Ronny Henriquez last spring, he'd be the closer.
-
They're not going to give Arraez a contract as big as Buxton's. $5M a season would be my max offer.

The cheap one-year deal has paid off pretty well. Solano was decent, Santana was good and France was passable. Unlike the robust supply of first basemen, the supply of catching in MLB is scarce. Turning a scarce asset like a catcher who hits like Jeffers into a mediocre first baseman would be destroying value for no reason. This is especially true for a player who only has 1 season left before free agency and might be the best expiring contract they have to trade in July.

I like Andujar and based on his past contracts and how cheaply the Reds got him in a deadline deal I think he's undervalued. His defense has been declining in the OF as his sprint speed has dropped but has held at 3B and 1B. Even with the decline, he's still playable at 4 positions. He is coming off the best stretch of hitting in his entire career (153 OPS+ for the Reds). He's only 30 so he should have a few good years left. I am curious as to what it will take to sign him. If they can't get the guy they want early, there will be at least a half-dozen guys without a spot in February willing to sign for $1M.

Just pay him the $2M. They don't have enough competent relievers to throw one away. They aren't going to find anything better on the free agent market for $2M. If he has a good spring, trade him in July.

I am not sure what is creative about taking a below average outfielder and making them a first basemen. That's been done thousands of times throughout baseball history. Usually, you end up with a below average fielding first baseman. It's interesting that 1B offense has fallen since the introduction of the DH in the National League. There's now enough room for players who have a bat and nothing else to offer. Fielding has improved at 1B as offense has declined. There also appears to be a glut of potential first basemen on the market this offseason. The Twins don't need to retrain Trevor Larnach and pay him $5M to play 1B when they can get an experienced 1B off the free agent market for the same price or less. Potentially available 1B Pete Alonso, Josh Naylor, Ryan O'Hearn, Munetaka Murakami, Kazuma Okamoto, Luis Arraez, Miguel Andujar, Paul Goldschmidt, Rhys Hoskins, Yandy Diaz, Ryan Mountcastle, Triston Casas, Yoan Moncada, Carlos Santana, Justin Turner, Josh Bell, Ty France, Lamonte Wade Jr, Rowdy Tellez That's 19 guys to pick from.

The Twins Don’t Just Need Strategy. They Need Soul
DJL44 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Bringing in Torii Hunter to manage this Twins team feels a lot like when Detroit brought in Alan Trammell to manage the Tigers, except Trammell had 3 years experience as a major league coach. -

What about making the good pitching coach the manager instead? -

Managing a bullpen might be the most important job for a modern manager. Why does anyone think Torii Hunter knows how to do that? -
Dishonorable mentions to Bailey Ober, Christian Vazquez, Mickey Gasper, Willi Castro, James Outman, Jonah Bride, Genesis Cabrera, Noah Davis, Carlos Correa, Royce Lewis, Matt Wallner, Ty France, Trevor Larnach, Alan Roden and Carson McCusker Here's where I will give credit to Rocco for quickly determining that Keirsey was terrible and attempting to hide him as much as possible. Even with limiting his playing time to areas where he might succeed (pinch running and defense), Keirsey still managed to produce highly negative results. DaShawn Keirsey might be the worst position player to ever play for the Twins (minimum 100 PA). The last thing this team needed was more Keirsey.

I'm still hoping they keep Ryan and Lopez and trade Ober this offseason. I don't think Ober will still be good in 2027. Someone needs to be traded to free up playing time for Bradley, Abel and Matthews. I know people keep posting about a lockout cancelling the 2027 season but I have my doubts. A lockout could shorten the season, but I'm betting we still get 100 games and a World Series. I don't think the owners will throw away $14B in revenue.

I suggested they write about the MLB playoff games that are happening every day and people treated that suggestion like I was asking for articles about birdwatching and trainspotting.

Arbitrary Thoughts: RHP Michael Tonkin
DJL44 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There is no upside here. He's only going to decline until he's unpitchable. In that sense, he's just like the other veteran retreads they like to bring in rather than relying on their prospects. Unlike some 1-year free agents, he's not going to be worth anything at the trade deadline. They need to give most of their 2026 innings to pitchers who might be good in 2027. If there are still spots left they should find relievers among the leftovers that someone might want to acquire in July. -

Arbitrary Thoughts: OF Trevor Larnach

Or cut him and spend the $4.7M on a free agent 1B. -
Arbitrary Thoughts: OF Trevor Larnach
DJL44 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They should be willing to risk losing him. This team can't afford to pay players above-market-rate contracts. They need to get bargains on everyone to compete with a $100M budget. If they keep him, the most likely scenario is they'll be sellers at the deadline. Nobody wanted him at the last deadline and they're certainly not going to want him at a higher price. If he isn't traded by November, they'll have to non-tender him. If he wasn't on the team already, nobody would be thrilled if they added him. Does anyone around here want to add a free agent LH-hitting platoon DH to this 40-man roster for $4.7M? I didn't think so. -
Arbitrary Thoughts: OF Trevor Larnach
DJL44 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If they can't trade him then they definitely shouldn't tender him a contract at $4.7M. Even if they want him back, they should be able to sign him at cheaper dollar figure.
