  1. The Backbone of the US Economy; Physical proximity professions, have been hit very hard in this Covid-19 world. https://www.stlouisfed.org/on-the-economy/2020/march/social-distancing-contact-intensive-occupations https://mobile.twitter.com/tracyalloway/status/1282316826362277888 Forecasting based on outbreaks might help speed more targeted financial and medical assistance.
  2. I didn’t want to take over the Covid thread that should discuss the virus and new norms. I also didn’t want to take over the stock market thread because “the Stock Market isn’t the Economy”. So I started a new thread. I am hoping to discuss indicators. Unemployment, unemployment benefits, Covid related shut downs/furloughs/layoffs... broad is great, detailed is better.
  3. Very interesting article in Pioneer Press from Charlie Walters. https://www.twincities.com/2020/07/11/charley-walters-twins-saints-partnership-talks-quietly-ongoing/ There’s been a few suggestions in the forums here on TD to this effect as well. Would you attend more Saints games, were they AAA affiliate of the Twins?
  4. If you want to re-create that experience, you can get the heat at home kits to eat while streaming a ball game. I doubt they still have the food trucks running during the Covid, but OMG is that good! https://www.hotindianfoods.com/
  5. I know right!?! If only we knew someone who already did great play by play work on some simulated Twins games....
  6. https://mobile.twitter.com/tlschwerz/status/1280266878515130374?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1280266878515130374%7Ctwgr%5E&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Ftwinsdaily.com%2Ftopic%2F37940-minnesota-twins-2020-schedule-released%2F There’s two weeks that don’t have two day games in there and a couple weeks that have 2 days games and a 5:10 or 3:10 start. There’s even a week in there with two day games in a row.
  7. I am sorry to hear that, and agreed, the worst day at the ballpark is still better than my best day at the office
  8. Viruses mutate. People can get the flu or common cold, several times in a season, even with a vaccine. Unfortunately we still aren't sure yet if Covid is like Measles, or if Covid is like Flu, or somewhere in the middle.
  9. Notre Dame is in South Bend Indiana. I know it’s easy to assume Boston, as it seems like every big higher ed institution is in Boston.... Seriously though, if Notre Dame said they were changing their mascot because of cultural sensitivity, I’d support that. Fighting any ethnicity isn’t exactly inclusive, is it? We don’t really think of people with Irish Heritage as persecuted, but the Know-Nothing Party (Nativist anti-Irish political party) had significant clout in the 1850s. “As a nation, we began by declaring that ‘all men are created equal.’ We now practically read it ‘all men are created equal, except negroes.’ When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read ‘all men are created equal, except negroes and foreigners and Catholics.’“ -Abraham Lincoln Notre Dame is an Irish Catholic school, so not the same as the other examples, but a piece of our history to be remembered, not celebrated
  10. I miss baseball too
  11. It’s a good reminder that the stock market is not the economy. I would think at some point the broader economy will impact investors decisions, but the vast majority of stock is held by institutional investors. When your metric is no longer the traditional long term investment metrics, but being able to transact faster than other institutions, logic gets cloudy, and day trading gets harder. I too am hoarding cash, but I never sold off. Because my horizon is far enough off that I can recover a couple bad years, I’m sitting tight.
  12. The concern over the award is to stop deifying an individual who should not be. That doesn’t take away from Landis’ achievements as commissioner. The man made significant contributions to the sport. He should be in the history books. Just not on the trophy.
  13. absolutely - we should all be critical consumers of information, and agreed 1000% that masks are only part of the equation. It's so difficult to see the big picture with such disaggregated and disjointed state by state, county by county, and city by city rules and impacts, compared to broad brush analysis.
  14. Mod note, let’s keep to topic. Covid media coverage is fine, but please don’t expand beyond Covid. Maybe we need to define “Media” vs. “News”. Ben works in News. News needs to be vetted, frequently News is behind a paywall. I quoted above Dr Bob who’s Media, not all media is vetted. Frequently media is not behind a paywall. I quoted Dr Bob because he’s an expert. He was referred to me by News, and seems like a trustworthy source to me. Everyone should view the lens however. He’s the head of UCSF medical dept. and trying to get everyone to wear masks. If you look at the legend of the info graphic, it describes the rule being mapped for mask wearers. The 25% drop being indicated is sum across all of the states with the same color code that indicates the mask rule. Inside of the states, some are up and some are down. Same with the brown ones. Some are up and some are down. Here’s the original story BTW. https://www.inquirer.com/health/coronavirus/covid-19-coronavirus-face-masks-infection-rates-20200624.html?outputType=amp&__twitter_impression=true
  15. At least one isn’t a rain out
  16. Mod note: since this is the OP it is “the topic”, therefore cannot be “way off topic”. Carry on: Desk tops are relatively easy. Laptops, not so much. My computer building days are quite outdated, but I’d think a processor and graphics card, even high end, would be cheaper than buying new. Processors require you to unseat the heat sink, lift a retention arm, has delicate pins, and needs to be seated correctly with the heat paste. It’s one of the harder replacement jobs that I’ve done, but it’s something any reasonably handy person can do. When replacing the processor I used to replace the heat sink and upgrade that as well. Discharge static and apply fabric softener or anti static spray around your work station. Make sure your new chip set fits your board. Buy thermal paste. If your processor or heat sink come with it, buy it anyways. It’s critical! As far as kind, I’m not sure, I favored AMD back in the day, and with AMD you have a reasonable chance it fits. Graphics cards are a very easy replacement. They just plug into the board and have one or two retainers. Again, I’m dated, but graphics cards used to be pretty inexpensive. There’s good YouTube tutorials out there too, if I were in your shoes, I’d DIY. Then again, I got sick of having to do this stuff continuously and bought a video game console and MacBook
  17. Dr @Bob_Wachter shared this. He’s a very good follow
  18. it’s not “the only thing” however, it’s a “big thing”. Growing or dying. There is no middle. I agree that the NBA is an extreme. It’s an extreme because they rested on their laurels too long. Change is good. Small things to keep the game moving and engaging with a broader audience is good.
  19. I agree with much of this, I don’t believe Russia or China either. The cost of the lock down was very high, economically, socially, and medically, and my fear in vain, because instead of “the dance”, we gave up and just took the reins off. Regarding hospitalization per positive tests, we can’t really know how good that is in the long run, yet. Meaning we see some anecdotal co-effects that are not yet understood. Your right, it can’t be stopped ever, even with a vaccine, we’re living in a world with Covid-19 for the rest of human existence. We can’t stay locked down forever. We do however need a coherent and coordinated plan to continue to slow the spread and protect the vulnerable. We don’t know who all of the vulnerable people are yet.
  20. Mod note: I am as guilty of this as anyone, a reminder to myself and everyone else: This is a baseball thread, let’s keep to topic Broader Covid discussion should be here: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/36541-coronavirus/page-33?do=findComment&comment=969735
  21. This really hit home for me the impact of the virus https://public.flourish.studio/visualisation/2645529/?fbclid=IwAR2CFswoQaYdtyyuNZRHxLkaQjkgaAUftSyM9v8iF8ruu0HZMc2oqWD3I_U&utm_campaign=MMS_Newsletter_20200626&utm_medium=email&utm_source=sfmc_This%20is%20nuts&utm_content=&utm_term=101718923
  22. “I’m falling asleep on the chair tonight” I haven’t used my phone charger next to the easy chair in months. It’s about time... Thanks for the hearty chuckle RBS
