  1. my post should be amended - the NFL does not have "strict rights" as has been proven incorrect. I do stand by that the draft and colective bargaining agreement are hte yin and yang of monopoly
  2. Being an amputee is a blessing and a curse: on one hand I have five fingers. On the other I do not.
  3. Living in Wisconsin AKA the “Wild Wild East”. I am 99.999% that isn’t possible, but I cling to that .001% chance that it is possible. I would need a couple months evidence that it’s working, before I went, and no way in hell would I bring my kids. Looks like 2021 at best before I can realistically think of catching a game at the park.
  4. Erroneous act? Chauvin committed a criminal act. Murder is a crime. Chauvin will get a chance to face his accuser in court hopefully go to jail, and when his sentence is up, leave, try to start his life over. I never said anything about Floyd’s character, frankly that’s not relevant. Floyd may well be a criminal, that doesn’t make any of this OK. Floyd died, how much more responsibility can a man take?
  5. victim blaming is really bad look. Please don’t post this type of thing.
  6. I asked you point blank, “how do we move forward?” You responded by calling me names.
  7. There is a lot going on here 1) just and equal economic opportunity 2) economics of crime 3) statistical sampling 1) we agree that economic opportunity is not equal or just among people of different races and ethnicities. https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/03/politics/black-white-us-financial-inequality/index.html 2) when you don’t have a lot to lose, the deterrence of jail isn’t very effective. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1573446399300432 3) you’ve no doubt read the theme of institutional racism in my posts. We’ve seen anecdotal evidence of it with the Floyd case. Hennepin county medical examiner, the prosecuter, the review board.... all of them tried to sweep this under the rug. If so many people were complicit in this murder, how are statistics compiled in the links? By the very police who are already biased. There’s nothing random about the sample. If police go out of their way to find crime in a specific population, that is where it will be found. So we have a group of people who felt (and are) discriminates against, that now in the days of Covid-19 being treated expendable by their employers and government institutions, and then Chauvin murdered Floyd. No wonder people are protesting. I’m angry too. So how do we move forward? It’s clearly not only one issue or solution. Comprehensive reform may not be achieved in our lifetimes. glunn brought up reforming the review board. The Civil Rights investigation is a start. Reviewing the War on Drugs seems like a good place to start. I like the idea of economic reform to go with it. How does this all go together?
  8. If you don’t have money to give, but have some time to spare, there are many food pantries that need labor to help pack boxes and load cars/carts and such. Justin Grimm (Justin.grimm@elca.org) from the ELCA is organizing one at Bethlehem Lutheran-Midway. My wife drove in yesterday to help. Everyone masked up for Covid, social distanced and appreciated the help.
  9. What parallels are you drawing with Bret Weinstein?
  10. police officers are people and their role in our society is critical, and their humanity is valued. As has been discussed several times in this thread, the issue with the phrase “Blue Lives Matter” is that it is co-opted from Black Lives Matter in order to undermine their objective of highlighting police/institutional injustice against black people. To say Black Lives Matter is not saying other lives don’t. To say Blue Lives Matter is to say the Black Lives Matter movement doesn’t have value.
  11. That’s a song referenced on the T-Shirt. Agreed on poor judgement. A guy wearing a t-shirt that many people won’t get the reference is a far cry from a phrase used to support institutional racism.
  12. Well written/articulated and thought out post. I disagree with you, but respect your work.
  13. NFL has it's antitrust exemption since 1961. The reason competitors all fail, is because the NFL holds the strict rights to a draft. The competitors can only sign free agents. Were the MLB to lose anti-trust exemption means losing the draft. Free Agency starts day one, but the union may survive. Suddenly a level playing field could mean legitimate competition for eyes and talent.
  14. Too long to announce, but welcome just the same. Minneapolis Police Department to undergo civil rights investigation
  15. Police officers are people. People come in all varieties. The concern from my perspective is laws and institutions designed to either protect the bad enforcers of the law or discriminate against people who the laws and rules are supposed to protect.

  17. you could make a case that public servants in general are underpaid and that could be a detriment to efficacy of recruitment and retention strategies, but hundreds of years of history says this is more of a public apathy issue than it is an HR issue. Chauvin was only the match that lit the fuse. If not Chauvin there was going to be another officer. It’s not just the police institution getting protested, and the strong police leaders are marching along side the people suffering most of this injustice, who are the same people who have suffered most of Covid-19, have died in greater numbers because of it, and have been laid off because of the economic impact of it. There are many institutions that have failed huge swaths of our society. Throwing some money at underpaid police doesn’t fix that.
  18. Well said Nick! If we sit idly by and say nothing, then how are we any better than those three police officers who watched Derek Chauvin kill a man in cold blood?
  19. This is what we should be seeing by our leaders: https://mobile.twitter.com/RexChapman/status/1267107339833925634?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1267131206681886722&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F2020%2F05%2F31%2Fus%2Fflint-michigan-protest-police-trnd%2Findex.html
  20. The original post from the Kepler thread had some points to discuss. To say Black Lives Matter is to acknowledge that black people are racially profiled and discriminated against. It’s not to minimize the value of other people lives. Of course all lives matter, that’s not the point. We need to affirm the rights of our neighbors, and acknowledge the inequality and injustice some of our community members face. Not everyone can be out there protesting, but we can say that the injustice is wrong, it needs to change.
  21. Moderator note: A reminder to keep the topic to Kepler in this thread, we have a broader topic in the sports bar to discus the tragic events in Minneapolis and now across the United States http://twinsdaily.com/topic/37549-grief-and-pain-in-our-community/
  22. It looks like each affiliate has 36 players, 7 affiliates with Dominican is 252 minor leaguers at 400 per week is $100k weekly over 20 weeks, out of pocket for the Pohlads. $2M is a lot of money, but in the grand scheme, it’s not much compared to what a single major league free agent makes. Thrilled the Twins are supporting their players. Disappointed other teams aren’t.
  23. fair... Jacob Frey, Melvin Carter and Tim Walz all need to step up big
