  1. I didn't like Buxton's chance against that forkball. Top of the order for the ninth though.
  2. I bet the bullpen guys are all wearing camo by now. You don't want to be put in this game.
  3. Grossman makes outs 1 and 3 for the inning. That's got to sting a little. Great 2 out hitting for the other guys
  4. They should move on from mediocre veterans for all kinds of reasons, but: "The Twins aren’t inclined to deal right-hander Ervin Santana unless they’re “wowed” by an offer, tweets Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. Despite Santana’s age (33) and their distance from contention, the last-place Twins regard him as a quality future piece. Santana, who’s on a $13.5MM yearly salary through 2018 and has a $14MM club option for 2019, has pitched respectably this season (105 1/ innings, 3.93 ERA, 6.41 K/9, 2.48 BB/9)." They are the Twins. Not a lot of common sense in that front office.
  5. If that is the reasoning behind the sentence then the punishment should be execution. Keep in mind that I still think he should of been convicted of a felony. I just think four years is unnecessary. The guy isn't really a danger to society, so I don't really see the reason for it.
  6. I was referring to the assertion that federal crimes have higher conviction rates and longer sentences. This is largely do to the resources they use in the investigations. Personally I do not think sentences should be based on anything other than the crime committed. The sandwich analogy was not started by me and is no doubt flawed, but yes that crime would also be breaking and entering. My point is that the severity of the crime committed absolutely should be the main consideration in sentencing. The federal governments stance on hacking is hard for me to understand. They have extremely harsh sentences for citizens who are convicted of it yet they know that the Chinese government has teams of people who spend everyday attempting to hack American company's. They take very little action against them. If the act of hacking in and of itself is such an egregious offense then they no doubt they should of imposed harsh sanctions on them long ago.
  7. The Eighth Amendment of the United States Constitution prohibits the federal government from imposing excessive bail, excessive fines, or cruel and unusual punishments to criminal defendants who have been convicted of a crime. This means that the government cannot impose a penalty that is grossly disproportionate to the seriousness of the offense. This guy did not steal 1.7 million dollars from the Astro's. He looked at their scouting reports. This did not make them unusable for the Astros. The value of this information is subjective since it is really just their opinion on the value of players. No doubt it is a disadvantage to have 1 team know who you are targeting, but it's not going to stop you from obtaining any of players you want. I can not see how this disadvantage equates to a 4 year prison sentence. If you break into my house and make a sandwich it's trespassing. If you rob me it's burglary. Intent matters when it comes to sentencing. The cost of the investigation should not. Hell, we've spent tens of millions of dollars investigating the Clintons. Does that mean they should get life in prison?
  8. 4 years is way too much. The guy using almost the same password for both systems was providing a lot of temptation to someone in a competitive environment. It's really not much of a hack when it's that easy. People are always happy to see long prison sentences, but they rarely ask it they're necessary. At some point it's just vindictive. A 1 year sentence with 6 months served would be plenty. This guy would never try something like this again.
  9. Just a thought. How about Jeremy Shelley from the Giants. You can't deny their success or his role in it. http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2015/9/24/9394611/sf-giants-gm-bobby-evans I'm a little skeptical about taking a Cubs assistant GM. They haven't been together very long and I'm more inclined to give the credit for their success to Epstein and Hoyer. Quite a few good candidates mentioned so far and I'd be hard pressed to pick one without more information.
  10. Yeah, I'm no fan of Molly's coaching, but this doesn't worry me too much. I'll judge Pohlad on what he does, not what he says. It sounds like he's not looking for a quick house cleaning. That could certainly change depending on the GM they bring in. I've been waiting for this for a while now and damn it! I'm going to be happy about it.
  11. Due to the timing of this I have to think Ryan was fired for his absolute inability to make deals. The Twins had major roster construction issues coming into the season and Ryan did nothing. The Twin's have been sellers for months, but Ryan hasn't moved one player. I think Ryan was always to worried about winning every trade value wise. In some situations close is good enough. I imagine Pohlad walked into Ryan's office and asked what the plan until trade deadline was. Ryan-Just waiting for the phone to ring. Pohlad- You know what Terry. We'll just let the secretary answer it.
  12. Why not both? We are going to have a lot of prospects coming up who will have low salaries. The farm system is not barren. If there's ever a time where we can afford a #1 pitcher it will be then. It would be similar to the Cubs signing Lester when their prospects started playing well. We really don't know what will happen to potential free agents by 2018 either. Look at Cueto. He had a rough couple months before he hit free agency and the Giants got him at a reasonable price. I don't think a top contender only builds through the farm system. Usually it will be a combination of development and free agency.
  13. Last I heard some politician with ties to a MLB owner was bringing forth legislation to exempt minor league players from minimum wage requirements. Pretty disgusting. Sorry about the lack of details, but I don't feel like looking it up right now.
  14. It really depends on what they do with the money. If they sign an ace in 2018 buy getting rid of expensive players now, then all is well. Not to mention it takes two teams to make a trade. We don't know what's more important to the other team.
  15. I don't see it as a big problem. It'd be nice to have a good bench bat every game. If the pitching staff gets worn down just throw one of them on the DL for a week. Not that I wouldn't take a trade for Mauer if it was an option.
  16. This article presents Molitor as a coach who has been patient with young players. Don't think I can agree with that after seeing how Arcia, Meyer, Buxton, etc. were treated earlier in the season. There was way to many games with the young players sitting on the bench. I haven't been impressed with the in game decisions at all either. Hopefully this piece isn't really indicative of the off-season plans.
  17. Damn! Just was going to start watching the game and it's already a disaster.
  18. I'm curious to see how Vargas looks now days. In Seth's article about the top 5 minor league hitters for the month he had about a .200 avg with a .360 obp. How does that happen? It makes me think pitchers are doing their best not to give him anything to hit.
  19. Even if Polanco + prospects is worse in 2018 you still want to make this move. We're not going to be a top level contender without real top of the rotation pitchers. There are going to be aces available in free agency in 2018 and the Twins need to get one. Dozier is not where we want the Twins payroll allocated.
  20. Desmond was a bat first shortstop who couldn't get on base anymore. That wasn't really a big need for the Twin's in the offseason. The main problem as I see it is that you're just not going to make the playoffs with the Twin's pitching staff. I doubt he would of had the same success with the Twin's anyways. A lot of guys on the Rangers are having really good years.
  21. Seems like this should be the year to go all in. It's a lot better competing against the Padres and Braves than the Yankees and Dodgers. Hell, how many of these guys could you get for what we are paying Ervin Santana.
  22. Just for the record the like is because I appreciate your contribution to the Twins Daily community. Not because I'm happy Hughes will be having shoulder surgery.
  23. I'd assume the Twin's pay no attention to it. Whether that is good or not is debatable. Buxton will have 2 years of service time starting next year while contributing almost nothing after all.
