Trade Deadline Preview: The Milwaukee Brewers
mikelink45 replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
For perspective we need to look at who left, not just who came. I like Puckett Pond's ten worst Twin Trades - 10 worst trades as an example or how difficult it is to make these trades work. To be fair here are the 10 best from him - 10 best trades. None of these trades are associated with our front office. If we look at Escobar and Pressly, both have been very productive and we are still waiting for production on our side of the ledger. Acala has been here two years and we are still waiting to see him turn the corner. I am not against trades, but the team really has to have a good scouting report on the prospects that they get. But even more important we have to know our own depth - Wade, Baddoo, Anderson... we have a lot of productive ex-prospects playing significant time and doing well for other teams. The nice shiny toy that the neighbors have is not always better than what you already own.- 12 replies

Trade Deadline Preview: The Milwaukee Brewers

The more trade previews I get from TD, the less enthused I am. I don't want those players, but I am willing to just give them Josh Donaldson and his contract.- 12 replies

Not Good? Be Interesting (Twins Pitching)
mikelink45 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Jettison the deadwood - get rid of those who have shown themselves to be mediocre or worse. Send them packing. Bring in the new arms, put them out there to prove or disprove. Time to start moving on. I am still wondering what it benefits the team to have another start by Happ?- 10 replies

Trade Deadline Preview: The Oakland Athletics
mikelink45 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As usual there is nothing very exciting here. Tossing in Rogers or Berrios as was mentioned should do more than move the needle. Then we have to get their best, but mainly lets just let Cruz have a nice finish to his season, dump Happ and Pineda and move on. It is a sad situation when the only things we can write about are speculations about which teams we might trade with and how the minors are doing. Not TD fault, but it emphasizes how far we have fallen. Which brings up another question - why aren't we speculating about one of the three catchers in a trade since that is such a valuable position.- 11 replies

Twins Prospect Retrospective: LHP Charlie Barnes
mikelink45 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Nice comments. I am not an Ober fan, but would love to see him succeed. I am not sure what the formula is for a good starting pitcher now. I think about Kaat, Pascual, Perry, Viola, Santana and there is no single equation. What I want is to see intangibles like Morris brought, but I do not know how to measure them.- 29 replies

Twins Deadline Will Determine Depth of Failure
mikelink45 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have not seen the trades or FA signings of this FO that give me confidence. Two years we win the division and then we drop to the scrap heap. That is not right. Do not trade our only two really reliable pitchers. I do not want to wait 3 years for the prospects to get here and find out they are not as good as the original. Keep developing out minor league arms. Figure out what happened when we had a good staff - just a year or two ago. I put Berrios and Rogers in my untouchable list and defy the other teams to give me an offer that would put them back on the marker. We all love Buxton, but we have paid him as a full time player and he has averaged 65 games over seven years. Sano, Donaldson, Simmons, Cave, Garver, Cruz, Maeda, Happ, Thielbar, Dobnak, Smeltzer, Thorpe, Robles and the movable parts. We also have some give-aways like Colome,- 33 replies

Twins Prospect Retrospective: LHP Charlie Barnes
mikelink45 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Keep bringing up the arms. Let's see someone really rise and blow us away! I do not think Barnes, Ober or Jax is the answer, but let's hope they are able to bridge the gap to Duran, Balazovic and Winder.- 29 replies

3 Twins Second Half Storylines to Follow
mikelink45 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Young arms interest me the most. Who will they bring up? Will they bring Cave back? I hope not I like Gordon on the team. Do we see Astudillo again? Will Buxton play for us again this season? Can we extend Berrios? Is there a real SS available after Simmons leaves? Not a fill in, a real SS. Can Celestino develop quickly enough to keep CF? -

If Berrios does not get one of those top three, they do not get Berrios. The more I think about the Twins situation the more I think we are giving up on signing Berrios too soon. If we are going to trade another start (I think Pineda is gone) I would start thinking Maeda! His 2020 season still has legs even though I think it was an aberration.- 23 replies

I do not want to subtract the two positives from a negative pitching staff with the hope that we can find someone who someday maybe can be almost as good as what we trade. No thanks. Develop what we have in the minors, sign quality instead of quantity in FA and keep moving forward. I am sorry Cruz is going, but we can possibly replace him. Rogers and Berrios we cannot.

Good to see the exTwins, rehab or not, do what they are supposed to do. Not sure where they all fit on the current roster, but trade time needs to provide the right mix by the end of the season.

Reflecting on the Best and Worst First Half Ever
mikelink45 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nicely done. Even older than Richard, I too love baseball on the radio. I no longer have a transistor radio under my pillow and have to turn to streaming because of my travel, but there is no more soothing sound than a good baseball game and competent announcers. -
The future is not Refsnyder, Garlick or Cave - putting them back on the roster serves no purpose. They might all be great guys, but this season is not about winning an extra game, but rather for preparing for 2022 and beyond.

Sorry, but we never let go of Ortiz, why would we let go of Baddoo? It is too good of a story.

The Twins (Still) Have a Velocity Problem
mikelink45 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What you did not cover is our Tommy John rate with hard throwers. Our prospect list is half IL list. -
I have to admit, I know nothing about these draft picks. No Clue. But I read the descriptions - "does not have the most range in the world", "While the ERA is not promising,", "as he put up a 5.23 ERA in 82 and 2/3 innings pitched and he struggled in the College World Series.", "won't flash any specific plus traits", "after a disappointing performance this spring for the Bruins he fell down draft boards", and "here were some concerns on how good his arm would be after coming back from Tommy John surgery," These are comments from the summaries. Wait and see, good luck guys. Maybe one of you will walk across a MLB diamond, but have fun while you try.

Might be true, but it is still my wish. What does another start by Happ mean for the future? Who cares about Coloumbe, Law, Robles after this season? I am not interested in a winning second half, I want a winning season. Push the envelop.
