  1. Because those same teams had a chance to take him for nothing a few weeks ago when we DFA'd him. Milone just isn't very good.
  2. In any other city I think it would be a no brainer, you sit Mauer. He can start 1 or 2 games per week and pinch hit every close game. But, I don't see this organization benching Joe, so I don't see Park finding any playing time until Vargas cools off.
  3. I think he's a lot closer than a year away. He looks to be ready right now. I'd expect he'll be in the rotation by September 1.
  4. This is an odd comment, considering I don't see a single poster criticizing the move, and in fact the vast majority are ecstatic over the move.
  5. Perhaps you should just ignore the thread then? Rather than jump into a thread and tell everyone in it how lame and pointless their discussion is?
  6. And yet you still find yourself opening the thread. It's almost like there should be some way to know which thread is which so that you can ignore the ones that have nothing new to offer.
  7. If you are willing to weed out the standard throwaway nonsense (from both sides), there is actually some pretty good discussion in this thread.
  8. I'd go one step further and say that Gibson is nearly finished with his prime years. I'd consider ages 25 through 29 a baseball players prime.
  9. OK, I was misinformed regarding the NHL buyout process. I'm amazed that the players agreed to that. They must have an incredibly weak union.
  10. Yep, Gleeman said it well on kfan today. He said that when you sign a 32 year old FA pitcher to a 4 year deal, it's the first 2 years that you want, but you pay the extra 2 years because that's the price to get those first 2 years. The Twins should be thrilled to get years 1 and 2 only, and a prospect or two to boot. I agree 100%.
  11. The amount he's making has no bearing on the argument. Contracts don't become meaningless just because the salary is an obscene amount. And a buyout system would be pointless in MLB. The buyout is only for cap relief. The player still gets his money, you just don't have to count it all towards the salary cap. MLB doesn't have a salary cap. An NHL type buyout changes nothing in regards to Mauer.
  12. By saying you wouldn't trade Santana for Gonsalves, then of course that must mean you'd be willing to, as a 100 loss team, trade Gonsalves for a 34 year old #4 starter?
  13. Sorry, but the call to the mlb needs to be earned in the field, IMO. And this guy is not a major league player, clearly. This isn't the St. Paul Saints, calling this guy up to the major leagues as some kind of sentimental token of loyalty would be flat out embarrassing, I think. Besides, he sounds like a smart guy, so once he retires he may eventually make it to the majors as a coach.
  14. So I'm paraphrasing here, but basically the Twins feel: Even though he's dominating at AAA, they want to see 6 or 7 straight starts where not even a single hitter makes "solid contact". Wow, unreal.
  15. The only thing I can think of is that they figure this deep into the season they might as well keep him down until about 5/1 next year and get yet another season of team control out of him. I realize some claim the Twins don't play that game, but with 3 slots in the rotation to choose from (Nolasco, Milone, Duffey), I don't see any other reason he's not up yet.
  16. Yes, and again, he is saying that if we had tanked for the #1 overall pick, we could have had a chance to pick them. That is the entire premise of the thread.
  17. Read the rest of his post (or the thread title). He's saying you can give yourself the chance to pick those guys by tanking for the #1 overall pick.
  18. We'll have to agree to disagree I guess. I see rebuilding as a process, you insist it is only a destination. I don't think they intended to get where they are, I think they were sincerely surprised every single one of these years that they were bad. Aside from trading Span ( I don't count Revere because I think that was a "baseball trade", I think they thought Worley made them better right away) I don't think they made a single move that pointed to rebuild.
  19. Simply building the farm system through your normal draft picks does not constitute a rebuild. With a true rebuild, Perkins would have been traded at his peak. Willingham would have been traded after his first season. We would have had more make good 1 year deals hoping to flip, instead of multiple year deals like Nolasco, Hughes and Santana. Suzuki would have been traded at some point. Fien would have been traded after he showed that 1 or 2 ok years. And, Terry never shied away from saying he intended to compete. Other GMs admit when they are rebuilding. San Diego just did, so don't tell me it was a lie he had to tell.
  20. Too late to edit, but my last post should say AA for Dozier, not AAA.
  21. Polanco is at .852 this year at AAA as a 22 year old. I'd say that is comparable enough to Dozier's. 885 in AAA as a 24 year old. Dozier did OPS .832 in his 22 year old season....at rookie ball. Will Polanco be as good a major leaguer as Dozier? We don't know. He's a better prospect than Dozier was though, so that's a start.
  22. Aug 1 would get him 10 or 11 more starts, so I'm guessing spycake was including those 4 as well.
  23. No, that would be many times WORSE than just about any mistake Antony could make, IMO. The Twins have real assets to trade this year and freezing them would be almost like punting an entire year of a rebuild.
  24. My guess on the month delay would be that Ryan wanted to eat most of Ervins salary to try to get a really good prospect back and Pohlad said no way am I paying that much for him to pitch somewhere else.
  25. Who else would make those decisions?
